Day 168 of 365 Photo Challenge. The Metropolitan Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew or Glasgow Metropolitan Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in the city centre of Glasgow, Scotland. It is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow. The Cathedral, which was designed in 1814 by James Gillespie Graham in the Neo Gothic style, lies on the north bank of the River Clyde in Clyde Street. St Andrew's Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Glasgow, currently the Most Reverend Philip Tartaglia. It is dedicated to the patron saint of Scotland, Saint Andrew.

From the Scottish Reformation of 1560 until the beginning of the Catholic Emancipation process in 1791, with the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1791 - which restored certain civil rights and freedom of worship - Roman Catholics in Glasgow had to worship covertly. By the end of the 18th century, particularly with the influx of Irish immigrants to Glasgow during the nascent stages of the Industrial Revolution, there emerged an increasing demand for a Roman Catholic church in the city. In 1805 there were approximately 450 Catholics in the city, but by 1814 the number of recorded communicants in the city had increased to 3,000, and in that year the decision was taken by the Rev. Andrew Scott to build a new church in Clyde Street.

The lands upon which the church was built had been purchased from the owners of the firm of Bogle and Scott which had previously traded from that site as part of Glasgow's tobacco and sugar trade with America and the West Indies. The families of Bogle and Scott, mostly Presbyterian and Episcopalian, were prominent names in Glasgow who owned numerous estates around the city and often held leading municipal offices, such as George Bogle of Daldowie, Lord Rector of the University.  Completed in 1816, and designed by James Gillespie Graham (1776–1855), the church of St. Andrew formally re-introduced the Roman Catholic presence to Glasgow.

// Shopping is a profound pleasure !!

The two main streets to shop in Glasgow are Argyle and Buchanan streets. The Argyle street is 2.1 mile long street in the city centre that offers majority of high street shopping brands. The Buchanan street is connected to it, showcasing a upmarket range of shops. When I used to miss home or feel low, I used to head out for some shopping in these streets. Shopping indeed is my therapy, what’s yours ? 😋

Game of Thrones, whisky, and Scottish history - safe to say I had fun with this one!

This past weekend I teamed up with @travelswithakilt and @madaboutravel of the #Scotlanders to put Diageo's #GoTSingleMalts to the test. Each whisky is aligned with a noble faction of Westeros: Cardhu for the Targaryens, Royal Lochnagar for the Baratheons, Talisker for the Greyjoys, Lagavulin for the Lannisters, Dalwhinnie for the Starks, Oban for The Night's Watch, Clynelish for the Tyrells and Singleton Glen Ord for the Tullys. It was my job to conquer the Riverlands and the Reach, taking on the latter two.
Having literally written the book on #GameofThrones and Scottish #history, I was a bit skeptical about the house allocations. Why on earth would House Tyrell of Highgarden be represented by Clynelish, the northernmost distillery of the bunch? Well it turns out that Clynelish is Gaelic for 'Garden on the Hill', and just a few miles away is Dunrobin Castle, a 19th century confection of a castle that is Scotland's closest match to Highgarden. Fair play.

The whisky itself is slightly floral, fruity and smooth, an excellent fit for the decadent palettes of Highgarden, but its history is anything but sweet. Clynelish was established by the future Duke of Sutherland in 1819. The Duke and Duchess presided over some of the most brutal episodes of the Highland Clearances, and the distillery was simply another way to make a profit. He even had the locals build a massive monument to himself atop the highest hill - sounds more like a Bolton than a Tyrell to me.
Nearby you'll find some fascinating historic sites, including the 2,000 year-old Carn Liath #broch, built by the people who inspired the Wildlings. Next up is Singleton Glen Ord, home of House Tully - who will win your allegiance?

🔭 Broughty Ferry

I had come here the first time back in 2015. I remember that it was such a tiring climb for me from the roadside up to the top. But when we visited this time in April, I knew what to expect, and I especially knew how fantastic the landscape was. So I was better motivated and determined to get up there again! The climb really wasn't so bad. In fact, we ended up scrambling up a few of the spires, as in this photo. I loved it😁!! Ok, this wasn't like the highest anyone has climbed on these needles, but it was exhilarating for me! We were so inspired by the landscape and spent hours running around finding new compositions. I just love the otherworldly shapes these rocks have formed into and can't get enough of them. The Isle of Skye has a real pull on my soul. Which place keeps calling you to return to?

Photos and words will never fully describe the magic of our trip to the UK. I had pretty high expectations, and the British Isles met and exceeded them at every point in our travels. The culture, food, and cities were fantastic, but oh how I loved the landscapes! I'm already planning which places to go back to and what new ones to check out the next time we visit (which I hope will be soon). But until then, enjoy a few photos from our trip!

Evening drives with a view. What else could a man want? .
