We're off today for Memorial Day. Here are some of our leaders needing recognition:

1. #LamarSmith
Shot dead on the courthouse lawn by a white man in broad daylight while dozens of people watched. Smith had organized African Americans to vote in a recent election.

2. #HerbertLee
Worked with civil rights leader Bob Moses to help register African American voters, killed by a state legislator who claimed self defense and never arrested.

3. #MedgarEvers
Directed #NAACP operations in Mississippi, was leading a campaign for integration in Jackson when he was shot and killed by a sniper at his home.

4. #LouisAllen
witnessed the murder of civil rights worker #HerbertLee, was making final arrangements to move north on the day he was killed.

5. #LieutenantColonel #LemuelPenn
Driving home from US Army reserve training when he was shot and killed by Klansman in a passing car.

6. #DrMartinLutherKingJr
He led and inspired major non-violent desegregation campaigns. He won the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated as he prepared to lead a demonstration in Memphis.

7. #ElHajjMalikElShabazz ( #MalcolmX)
More than just the "by any means necessary " mantra that has become his enduring legacy, the Brother Minister is loved for his willingness to eschew racism and evolve into a human rights activist. He was assassinated 54 years ago.

Lamar Smith was a leader in the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s, even though he isn’t recognized as such. He took a group of African American voters to the courthouse and filled out absentee ballots and campaign against the poll violence that would happen on voting day. He was shot and killed that same day, August 13th, 1955, at the Courthouse of Brookhaven, Mississippi. #LamarSmith -Bennett M. @bennett__mccoy

Love . . .
Up thinking tonight with a heavy heart about the word love, and the power of putting love in action.
.
.
One word, which has made ALL the difference in important decisions we make everyday.
With the 51st anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King J.r’s life recently celebrated, I thought deeply about all the moments when love should have taken precedence over all else, however, not to replace wisdom or strength with disregard, but with love comes understanding and without it hate is allowed to guide our actions.
.
.
The impact of enabling love could make the difference in a loved one making it home to embrace their family, once more.
.
.
Enabling love would have made the difference in an activist, a great orator, and dedicated minister who championed civil rights to continue a march planned to lobby Congress on behalf of the poor;
.
in a minister who spoke fiercely on human rights, freedom & action to continue leading his newly formed Organization Afro-American Unity, and allow his pilgrimage to Mecca to further influence his perspective on integration;
.
or a young philanthropist and innovative rap artist with a deep adoration for his community continue his plans for a STEM center for youth, and continue developing a co-working space and incubator that would support inventors in South Central L.A.
.
If love was considered first- the tears we cry for our fallen Kings would “. . . roll on like a river, righteous like a never failing stream!
Amos 5:24

Not that you should need any #motivation to get out & #vote tomorrow, but in case you have friends, family members, co-workers, or neighbors who aren’t enthusiastic about doing so, show them these pictures and remind them that effigies were still being strung up to intimate black voters during the #JimCrow era.

Remind them that #MedgarEvers, #JamesChaney, #AndrewGoodman, #MichaelSchwerner, #ViolaLiuzzo, #RevGeorgeLee, #LamarSmith, #HerbertLee, #CplRomanDucksworthJr, #RevJamesReeb, #JimmieLeeJackson, #JonathanMyrickDaniels, #SamuelLeamonYoungeJr, #VernonFerdinandDahmer, & many nameless & faceless others gave their lives for our #suffrage.

Remind them that Southern trees bear #strangefruit.

Do your #civicduty tomorrow and cast your vote. Then text, call, or e-mail people in your network & tell them to do the same. People sacrificed and died to make it possible for us to go to the #polls. They wouldn’t be trying to suppress our vote for generations if it didn’t mean a lot.

Lamar Smith, a 63-year-old farmer and World War I veteran, was a voting rights activist and a member of the Regional Counsel of Negro Leadership (RCNL). On August 2, he had voted in the primary and helped get others out to vote. There was a run-off primary scheduled for August 23. On August 13, Smith was at the courthouse helping other black voters to fill out absentee ballots so they could vote in the runoff without exposing themselves to violence at the polls.[1] He was shot to death in the front of the courthouse in Brookhaven, Lincoln County, at around 10 a.m.

✍🏾 With a protagonist lineup composed of such real, authentic, African-American Mississippi Superheroes like this, it may NEVER get sold or made. NEVER. Might not see the light of day. I honestly don't care... 😊 because it's been my own personal honor as a proud Mississippian ✊🏾 to write this complex tapestry of history and this has probably been one of the best original scripts I've ever developed in my life. It's still far from finished and it may just sit on a shelf or in a hard drive folder long after that or in someone’s trash can, but everything that it is and everything that it represents has already far exceeded what my own expectations were and with each new line and new page I write, it only continues to amaze me. August 13, 1955: Civil Rights Activist #LamarSmith Is Murdered.

At around 10 a.m., Lamar Smith was at the courthouse helping other Black voters to fill out absentee ballots so they could vote in the runoff without exposing themselves to violence at the polls. He was shot to death in the front of the courthouse in Brookhaven, Lincoln County, Mississippi. He was 63.

Lamar Smith was a civil rights activist, Black farmer, World War I veteran and an organizer of black voter registration. Smith was told on several occasions to quit the work he was doing or be killed.

ARRESTS:
3 men were arrested: Noah Smith, Charles Falvey and Mack Smith, were arrested in connection with Smith's murder. The men were each released on a $20,000 bond. Reports state there were "dozens" of white witnesses but NO witnesses ever appeared in court.

On September 13, 1955, an all-white Brookhaven grand jury failed to return any indictments.

The DA reported that the sheriff, Carnie E. Smith, refused to make an immediate arrest "although he knew everything I know". The district attorney further reported that the sheriff told him he saw Noah Smith, one of the accused, "leave the scene with blood all over him. It was his duty to take that man into custody regardless of who he was, but he did not do it." Lamar Smith reportedly attended meetings of the Regional Council of Negro Leadership (RCNL), the largest civil rights organization in the state. He was also a personal friend of RCNL president T. R. M. Howard of Mound Bayou

OTHER MURDERS:
Smith's murder was one of several racially motivated attacks in Mississippi in 1955. The other incidents included the murder of George W. Lee, a civil rights leader in Belzoni (May), the killing of Emmett Till, a Black teenager visiting from Chicago (August), and the shooting of Gus Courts (December), a civil rights associate of Lee in Belzoni.
The Smith case was cited in the NAACP's pamphlet M is for Mississippi and Murder.

The Smith case was cited in the NAACP's pamphlet M is for Mississippi and Murder. #dailyblackhistoryfacts #blackhistory365 #MisforMississippiandMurder #riplamarsmith #naacp #allblacklivesmatter #brownlivesmatter #nativeslivesmatter #stoptheviolence #stopracism

On this day 63 years ago... Lamar "Ditney" Smith was a U.S. civil rights leader, black farmer, World War I veteran and an organizer of black voter registration. In 1955, he was shot dead in broad daylight at close range on the lawn of the Lincoln County courthouse in front of approxmately 100 people in Brookhaven, Mississippi. No one was ever brought to justice for his murder.

#vote #FINEBLACKART.COM #CREATIVE #LEADER @d.marquehall was in jail when the first #presidential #election he would legally be permitted to vote in (thanks to the 15th amendment) as a #US citizen at least 18 years old had arrived.
He was in the hole when the guards made the announcement over the intercom that @barackobama ( #HAPPYBDAY) had won and D felt like he had let his ancestors down by not being a part of something so monumentally #historic while he was in solitary confinement.

He cried. He said he felt like a "WOS" and a "POS" and he vowed to never put himself in that situation again and to never let his #ancestors who died for him to have that right down again.

#BlackAmerica if your #vote didn't matter it would not be suppressed. #blackvotesmatter if your vote did not matter no one would have to register. You wouldn't have to be #registered as a #Democrat or a #Republican to vote in the #primaries. You wouldnt have to show ID. There wouldn't be an #electoral #college. Districts wouldn't matter. There would've never been #literacy #tests at polls and so on.... no one would've EVER HAVE BEEN MURDERED FOR #VOTING #RIP #JIMMIELEEJACKSON OR FOR REGISTERING PEOPLE TO VOTE RIP #MEDGAREVERS #LAMARSMITH #REVGEORGELEE #HEBERTLEE #LOUISALLEN AND SO MANY MORE!

In 2015, the #WorldHealthOrganization's #CancerResearch program classified the primary ingredient in #Monsanto's #pesticide #Roundup as a probable carcinogen.
.
Now Rep. #LamarSmith, the #Republican chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, has threatened to cut off the agency's funding in retaliation.
.
The World Health Organization's vital cancer research shouldn't be subject to the whims of #politicians doing the bidding of corporate campaign contributors. We need an overwhelming backlash to stop this attempt to silence scientific research in its tracks.
.
Tell Congress: Don't defund vital cancer research to protect Monsanto's profits.

Credit to from @gmofreeusa_official - Monsanto Pulls Puppet Strings in Congress: U.S. Rep Lamar Smith, chairman of the Committee on Science, Space & Technology, slated a full committee hearing with an agenda aimed squarely at attacking some of the world's top cancer scientists. The International Agency for Research on Cancer ( IARC) angered Monsanto when it declared the pesticide glyphosate, a key ingredient in Monsanto's weed killing products (Roundup), to be a probable carcinogen in 2015. Monsanto has been on the warpath ever since. Now, Monsanto has ordered some of their Congressional puppets (whose salaries are paid by taxpayers, by the way) to punish the IARC by pulling U.S. funding from the international agency.

Trey Gowdy is the latest chickenshit State Representative / Senator to announce that although he is troubled by what he sees happening in our government, he would rather retire and run back home than do the right thing with his office. These men are some of the only people who are actually in a position to stand up for the American people and defend the constitution, but unfortunately for us, they are a bunch of chickenshit cowards. These men aren’t the only ones either, there’s plenty of other representatives who are also choosing the easy way out. Fuck these gutless donkey dicks. Not so long ago: The White Citizens’ Council was formed in July 1954 in Indianola, MS. It was started by World War II veteran, plantation manager, and former captain of the Mississippi State University football team Robert B. “Tut” Patterson. The council was inspired by a speech by Judge Tom Brady who called on whites to mount organized resistance against the Supreme Court’s integration decree. The Council attracted white economic and political elites of the Deep South making some inroads among blue-collar workers pledging to maintain white supremacy. Unlike the KKK but working in unison, they met openly seen as "pursuing the agenda of the Klan with the demeanor of the Rotary Club. The council could reduce, if not cut off entirely commerce, credit and employment to Blacks who got “out of line”. Council membership may have reached a region-wide total of 300,000 at one point. The group worked with the publicly funded State Sovereignty Commission to spy on, harass, and undermine those favoring integration. On Aug. 5, 1955 the local NAACP submitted a petition with 53 names asking for immediate desegregation of all schools. Most of the petitioners were Black professionals, businessmen, and tradesmen. They lost their jobs or whatever business/trade they had with whites forcing some to remove their names from the list. Even those who removed their names could not get their old jobs back, nor find new employment. Many left town altogether. By the end of the year only 2 names remained on the petition. In May 1955 Rev. George W. Lee was shot to death after registering to vote and urging Black citizens to do the same; on August 13 Lamar Smith, a World II veteran encouraging Black voter registration, was shot dead in broad daylight. No arrests were made. Two weeks after Smith was killed, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam brutally murdered 14 year old Emmett Till. This is only a part of the real story of the Citizens Council and the South during the 1950’s. #whitecitizenscouncil #mississippi #emmetttill #theyrinitymurders #statesovereigntycommission #segregation #intergration #civilrights #georgewlee #lamarsmith #notsolongago #nsla

Not so long ago: Lamar Smith was born in March 1892 in Lincoln County, Mississippi. There is little information concerning his early life. Smith served in World War I. He returned to Mississippi from the war and became politically active. He was one of the few registered Black voters in Lincoln County. He worked to educate his community on the political process, registering voters and ensuring they were able to cast a ballot. In 1951 he associated himself with the Regional Council of Negro Leadership. The RCNL was devoted to causes similar to the civic duty of Black citizens. On August 2, 1955, Smith voted against the incumbent for a position on the Board of Supervisors. The result was that a runoff was needed. The runoff was to take place on August 23, allowing Smith to register new voters to try and secure the election. On August 13, Smith was on the steps of the Courthouse helping Black voters fill out absentee ballots so that they could avoid harassment and possible violence that would be a result of voting in person. Three white supporters of the incumbent, Noah Smith, Charles Falvey, and Mack Smith objected to Lamar Smith’s actions. Tempers flared and an altercation ensued. Noah Smith drew his pistol and shot and killed Lamar on the steps of the courthouse in front of a crowd of around 30-40 white witnesses. All 3 suspects fled the scene; however, Noah Smith, covered in blood, caught the eye of Sheriff Robert E. Case who detained the suspects, questioned them, but released them and decided not to press charges. A state grand jury composed of twenty white men heard the testimonies of fifty to seventy-five witnesses one month later. All claimed that they did not see any crime take place. When Lincoln County District Attorney, E. C. Barlow criticized the lack of witness cooperation, as well as the sheriff’s actions in handling the situation, a second grand jury was held in January 1956; however, the second jury obtained no new information since the first jury an none of the 3 suspects ever faced charges. #lamarsmith #votingrights #lincolncounty #mississippi #wwi #ww1 #regionalcouncilofnegroleadership #martyr #modernd

1️⃣ The U.S. government just released a report confirming everything we know about #climatechange. On Friday, the U.S. Global Change Research Program — supported by 13 federal agencies — officially released the fourth National Climate Assessment. Its conclusion: Humans are, without doubt, the cause of #globalwarming. See the full report at ‪Globalchange.gov‬.
