Varnished the day before and woke up to the morning sunlight reflecting off the floor and onto the painting, I just stared for a good 3 min. Think this means nature approves too. 18”x24” oil on canvas not available.

The colors and the shades look different sometimes because of the changing sunlight and ceiling lights each day. And the last photo looks better because I used a better camera.( It’s the closest match to the actual painting.) I don’t know if my approach was the best way to do it, but here’s what I did this time.👇🎨
• I sketched with a pencil and rulers, making sure the lines are straight and the angles are correct.( I used the grid method.)
• I applied masking tape along the line of the windows and the line between the wall and the sky so that I could follow the guidelines I made and keep the edges sharp.( It was really tiring. :P)
• Those thin lines, I used two brushes. One for painting and another one for scraping off the paints which ran over.
• I mostly used “bright” shaped brushes.🖌
Thank you for reading. Hope you enjoy it!

I’m one of those people who was never particularly good at one thing, but fairly competent at a lot of things.
While it’s nice to pick things up quickly, there’s a sort of loneliness in it as you don’t feel like there’s that one thing that sort of defines you. When I think of my closest friends and family members, it’s easy for me to say “oh she is the best photographer I know” or “he’s the smartest engineer I’ve ever met.”
I played soccer for a long time but I was always JV, never varsity. I was on a local ski team for a while but I never had one of the fastest times. I taught English abroad and really enjoyed interacting with students but I certainly wasn’t the best teacher.
Now I feel like I’m finally at a point in my life where I can dedicate large amounts of time to something I care about. After 24 years of life, I think I’m finally starting to understand what a passion is.
I had the pleasure of teaching a two day landscape painting workshop here at my studio in Sebastopol this past weekend. The students were great and the brushes were flying! Next month I’m offering a workshop on how to create an illustrated field journal. Check out www.jamesfreed.com for details. #paintingworkshop #landscapepainting
This painting was inspired by an afternoon hike through Thousand Palms Oasis, in the California desert. The lush plantlife growing around McCallum Pond catches the warm afternoon light, and the rocky ground glows with color. The brush strokes in this painting are loose and impressionistic, vibrantly alive with motion.

People think they don’t have
to learn because there is so much
information available. But
knowledge is more than
processing information. Only
the wise move fast enough.

The next two pages are from from my desert trip to @ozorafestivalofficial California. That was the most extreme weather I’ve ever camped in, on Saturday and Sunday of party it got down to 30 degrees with. 60 mph winds and sleet coming at you sideways, feeling like nails when it hit your skin. Many friends tents went down. I knew it was going to be crappy weather so I was prepared, & moved fast. We packed up are camp and slept in car Sunday night. This was from Monday (Memorial Day) when it finally cleared up and was 65 degrees and beautiful.
