There’s no such this as bad weather, only unsuitable clothes is an oft quoted Scandi proverb. Well can someone please tell that to my face.. despite being all wrapped up and toasty my face looks and feels as if belongs to a frozen chicken... the wind chill turns my face pale, causes my eyes to water, and nose to run.
As I find myself hating on the weather, I’m reminded of my childhood when my mum and dad used to miss Karachi winters, while the ones in Jeddah were much milder.
They missed the change in seasons, the change in food that it brought about, the eating roasted peanuts sold door to door, the annual razai/quilt being brought out, and new sweaters being knit.
Oh my days, shock horror..Have I turned into my parents Will I reminisce about how different(read better) everything was for the rest of my life through the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia.
How can I forget the bbqs and visits to the beach were winter staples (too hot to be outside in the summer). Corn on the cob from a stall, karak chai or the switch to drinking coffee from tea only during winter. The wearing of hoodies over abayas only during the evening or early morning never needing heavy layers. And if it did rain it meant schools were off. You tried to leave work early and it was a surprise holiday.
For three generations our family has moved and set up house in a different country. Bringing with them mainly memories of another time and place with them and passing them on to their children.
I would like to think that those stories enrich them even though they may roll their eyes and wonder why we can’t just forget and move on.
If you are still here, thank you for reading such a rambling long piece, virtual hugs from me and now my mocha is getting cold so bye. Stay warm, inside and out.
