🍂This witch is Indigenous and Proud 🍂
Something I don’t talk about nearly enough is that I am from the Mohawk nation of Kahnawake. I grew up with my family taking me to pow wows and my dad teaching me about the history of our people. His pride radiated through him and passed onto me. As I got a little older I constantly had non-indigenous people telling me “you don’t look native” “lol what are you like 2%” “but you don’t live on the reserve” “Uhh you look too white to be native” And all other comments that they felt appropriate to use to strip me of my heritage...so I became privately proud of who I was. I shrank away and questioned if I was even allowed any claim to my heritage. In these instances I felt forced to take out my status card because apparently I NEEDED to prove I was who I said I was.
As Canada continues to shut down in support of Wet’suwet’en and indigenous people everywhere it’s never been a scarier or better time to be proud of who I am. Racist comments and hate rhetoric be damned. I have taken this as an opportunity to dive deeper into my indigenous history and to surround myself with other amazing indigenous individuals. I AM PROUD of my indigenous history and my blood and I will no longer be silenced by anyone. 🍂 #photooftheday #instagay #gothgirl #witchesofinstagram #witch #goth #inked #piercing #lgbt #queer #musician #tattoo #girlswithtattoos #girlswithink #montreal #canada #whynter #modified #tattoosofinstagram #girlswithpiercings #inkedgirls #soundengineer #singer #indigenousandproud #iroquois #firstnations
