Loved dancing with all my POC brothers. AND getting to re-create some West Side moves in NYC. Crazy, now that I write this post at the airport I’m headed to my first West Side Story rehearsal in LA. So grateful.

“Where are you from, Jordan” Growing up as a man of color in American, you’re taught your blackness is worthless. From very young, you begin a program of brainwashing + whitewashing, starting with the images you see in your children’s books, to the flood of images on the news showing that black is ghetto, thuggish, and that men of color are “super predators”, rapists and deadbeat. You’re taught that your lineage of ancestors, contributed nothing to society, and were ‘rescued’ from the jungle, thanks to European intervention. You’re deceived into thinking that your history begins as a people enslaved, and that HIS STORY holds precedent above all is. Thankfully, growing up I had an amazing network of mentors and advisers of diverse ethnic heritage who helped to educate me, and point me in the path for my own self discovery, actualization, and education.
My mother was born and raised in The Bahamas, and her dad we believe in Afro Cuban, which is why mom mom speaks some Spanish & Portuguese, and why I taught myself Spanish very young. Her mom was born in Haiti. My father’s family comes from Alabama, a mix of African roots and #NativeAmerican, either #Choctaw #Chickasaw or #Cherokee.
Traveling the world and speaking more than one language, has truly opened up additional dimensions to what it means to be alive and living. 6 months ago I concluded an 18 month, 7 continent world tour, where I traveled thousands and thousands miles, spanning 5 continents. What I saw shocked me, and my then understanding of identity. I learned that my “blackness” could actually be from MANY corners of the Earth, and inspire of the differences that are promoted, there are far more commonalities. In Morocco, I saw I could be a black Moroccan. I could easily be from Kenya, Tanzania or anywhere on the African continent. In South America, I could easily be Afro Brazilian (did you know Brazil is the largest African population in the world outside of Africa) or I could be Afro-Colombian, or Afro-Peruvian. The point: not ONLY is black beautiful Af, royal AF, #melaninpoppin AF, but it’s also diverse AF. I’m so proud of my African heritage of excellence 👑✊🏿. 📸 @nicovani_
