It was 1989 when this camera altered the course of my life. I was 7, and I used it without permission. The punishment was worth the experience. In a single moment that would stay with me forever—pressing that red button—I recognized the power of deciding who, what, and where would be memorialized by the simple act of pressing record. The privilege of this act, to have an instrument with which to make a record of something or someone, never escaped me. I vowed to capture the world I knew, the stories I was told, and the people I knew existed.

30 years later, I embark on another journey in the name of Film. Through chance, hard work, and magic I am joining Stanford University’s MFA in Documentary Video and Film program. I am grateful for this opportunity to learn, to record, to screen, and to instruct. I am grateful for my father who after graveyard shifts in factories eventually decided to let me use the camera he had paid good money for so I could make my “movies.” I am grateful for my siblings who made shows with me just to watch ourselves on TV. I am grateful to family and friends who let me point a camera at them on a whim that by doing so I was commemorating them in my lifelong collection of muses and heroes. I am grateful to the mentors and peers who supported me, put my name in someone else’s mind, and challenged me to believe in myself.

Bay area: I’m coming back to you. Let’s get in touch. Let’s work together. California, I’ve missed you. LA, just a bit longer I hope.

All of this is to say thank you to the real MVP. The person who 6 years ago told me to study that which I was passionate about. My boo, Emily. I am half the man you deserve and a tremendous fan of you and all you stand for.

We artist can be more than one thing on the road to our dreams, our careers. We can use more than one lane.

To this camera, which I am taking with me back to California, where it was born and longs to return to, I promise to use your red button for good. For truth. For representation.

It’s always thrilling to come across a new, engrossing book, but this past week has reminded me how lovely it can be to revisit an old favorite. With Room, We the Animals, and now The Virgin Suicides, I’m appreciating how a stretch of time, in some cases years, to mull over a work informally and through personal relevance can add layers to the reading experience once one returns to it. Of course, one of my favorite parts of this particular re-reading process has been being privy to many new interpretations, ideas, and forms of meaning—while also feeling validated somehow that long before I started developing this vocabulary around craft, I was still intuitively aware of what makes a story good. #605 #seminar #rereading #mfa #love #books #favorites #fiction

One of my most enjoyable trips last year was my trip to Mexico City and I can’t wait to go back there again. Visiting the Garciela Iturbide photography exhibit, who is a renowned Mexican photographer, brought back memories of walking around in Mexico City, with a 1970’s twist to it #mfa #mexico #gracielaiturbide #photography #boston
