Just read a book by @drdansiegel with the best description of the brain I think I’ve read - it’s so simple so thought I’d share it here.
In his representation your fist represents your brain. The back of your hand is the back of your head & your knuckles are your face.
Your wrist is the spinal cord leading in to the brain, the palm is the most primitive part of the brain & responsible for many basic needs & survival including the fight or flight response. The thumb represents the emotional regions of the brain (imagine there is a thumb on the other side too). The fingers represent the ‘thinking’ regions of the brain. .
This is a super simplified version of the brain but the main point to note is that these 3 areas of the brain need to work together, to be integrated, for us to feel balanced & well. .
If you make this fist with your own hand you can clearly see that the emotional region of the thumb is squashed between the survival part on one side & the thinking part on the other, & as such it is heavily influenced by both. Put another way our emotions are determined by both our thoughts & by messages from our body about how safe we are.
Look closely at your fist again & you will be able to see that the finger tips of at least the middle two fingers touch the palm of the hand, showing us that the thinking part of the brain can link directly to the flight or flight region (by passing emotions). Because of this connection we have the potential to calm down our nervous system using our thoughts, and to soothe our thoughts by calming the nervous system. Clever 💫
I have way more on this to come, so please watch this space for incoming posts about how we can start to retrain the brain to be more integrated and in control, and how yoga practices can help this process. But for today let’s just take in the beauty of the brain and how cleverly it’s structured, day in day out the brain truly blows my mind! .

This little air plant my mom got holds my blue calcite sphere perfectly! 🧘🏼♀️🌿🔮 #calcite is an amplifying crystal that is supposed to enhance growth and mental connection!
Your movement/asana practice is meaningful only when connected to your breathing. This is what "mind-body connection" really is. As you feel the expansion in your abdomen, let the movement start from there. Everything else follows. You calm yourself through the breath. When you wake up and stretch, you breathe deeply to stretch, then on the exhale you soften and relax. A physiotherapist cannot manipulate you if you're not on an exhale, relaxed. When you realize this connection your body will cooperate more. You will open up blockages more easily and you will find your self deeper in the asana practice.

Are you either too afraid or ashamed to enjoy it
At the start of classes I get students into down-dog then give the opportunity to move freely, and almost every class I see the same thing - nothing.
When given the choice to move freely/intuitively/creatively/expressively, so many people get stuck either holding their down-dog, or very quickly adopting patterns of repeating the same movement, or sticking to what’s familiar.
Why when given the choice of freedom do they choose to confine themselves I think it’s (partly) because as adolescents and adults our minds have been socially conditioned to be either so fearful or shameful that this translates into our physical body, and we become paralysed into familiarity, into our comfort zones, into ‘safety’.
But I understand - I’m still working on it myself. As someone who needs structure, free movement is a challenge, which I why I’m now working on letting myself just move, as well as expanding my movement vocabulary to construct new and exciting sentences, and so better express myself.
Break out the confines of the comfort zone - free your body, free your mind.
Some @budokonuniversity inspired moves. Sound on for a winning finish...

Hands up if you are loving your classes at Define London! 🤩
Last weekend was the eight yoga teacher training weekend. I have so much gratitude for this course that it’s hard to even put in to words. The people I’ve met and connected with are just such amazing and beautiful souls. Again I’ve come to realise how it’s always the people around you who make the journey so much more memorable 💕
Who cares it was +40C, with humidity 60% and it was feeling like +52C! Buckets of sweat are good!
What is this though It is movement, and what I like about it is how vast it can be. It is not yoga, not flexibility, neither it is just strength or crossfit - and at the same time it has all of it.
Movement culture practices strength, cares about the health of joints and not only aesthetic looks, and it is all about moving the body freely with no restrictions.
It is hard to embrace it in the world of definitions and external looks, but as soon as you get it you can’t get rid of it!
Yalla, more practice to come!

So grateful to the @fullcirclefire tribe for giving me the opportunity to perform with them last weekend! Y’all are so sweet, beautiful and some serious fire benders ✨😍✨ My first intimate experience with fire spinning happened at Cosm 2 years ago, so performing in that space for the first time was indescribable 💞
