Each person has a specific built-in muscle firing order that allows for smooth movements during the walking cycle. Complex firing orders to and from the brain and spinal cord must direct every move with precise neurological instructions to keep muscles from firing in a jerky, chaotic manner. 
The ideal firing order sequence is:
1️⃣ Hamstrings

2️⃣ Gluteus Maximus

3️⃣ Contralateral Erector Spinae

4️⃣ Ipsilateral Erector Spinae

Unfortunately the pattern usually begins with firing of the:

1️⃣ Hamstrings

2️⃣ Erectors

3️⃣ Gluteus firing late. 
The solution is found in structures like the Psoas. As long as the psoas is tight and overpowering the Gluteus Maximus, the glutes will continue to weaken. Once the psoas is released, reciprocal inhibition will help strengthen the gluteus.

Open up your chest, stretch your pecs and scalenes. 
The door stretch is a convenient one. With your arms extended (or with a slightly flexed(bent) elbow), between the door, lean forward and look up to realign your neck. 
Remember the trees🌲and reuse paper📰 & gift bags or often I wrap gifts in Quinn’s art. But I do enjoy wrapping with festive paper (especially when I find one that reminds me of someone I love🖤) and wrapping is an art in itself. 
And ask for help. 
When life gets extra busy, it can be overwhelming. There’s no harm in asking, (maybe don’t seek help from you cat😻...unless that’s with unwrapping!🎁) My recipe for thriving throughout the Holiday Season:

Listen to music (& take a break and dance a little). Watch some Holiday Favourites.

Buy some new-olds. Reuse and donate. 
Enjoy a cup off tea🍵...or a cup of cheer🍻 while wrapping or decorating.

Burn or diffuse essential oils or sit near your tree and just breathe🌲

Stretch, walk, exercise, sleep, enjoy social outings, make time for rest, and remember that it is okay to say no too. 
Warm up in a hot Epsom salt bath. 
Take up an outdoor sport, it helps those long winters...if we have snow that is. (Please snow!❄️ Some sunshine 🔆would be okay too, it feels like forever since you’ve graced us with your presence against a blue sky!) Enjoy the sweets and extra eats, just keep it in check. 
Allow yourself to feel it all. The Holidays have a way of bringing it all out. Whatever you feel, just try to be okay with it, it will pass. What you resist will persist, so feel it. 
Give yourself the gift of massage therapy, myofascial release, and craniosacral therapy this Holiday Season. 
Merry Christmas to those of you celebrating; may all of you be safe, and may you have some peace ☮️ and happiness throughout this Holiday Season.

[MOBILITY MONDAY] - Calf Release
_
Often times people struggle to do movements like squats due to restriction of the ankle via the calf. Taking the time to release tight tissue in the calves can make a world of difference in terms of your movement patterns. 
_
I recommend doing this with a peanut (essentially two tennis/lacrosse balls tapped together) or a small dumbbell as shown. Rolling out tight calves prior to lifting for 30s-90s can help open up range of motion that is restricted so you can optimize your movement patterns. Start by shifting your weight forward to back, and then aside to side. Repeat this sequence along different points of the muscle to make sure everything gets released.. _
Soft tissue work should not feel like you are tenderizing your muscles, so you shouldn’t apply so much pressure to the point that it’s painful. It should feel mildly uncomfortable depending on how tight your muscles are. 
_
This would be great to do before a workout to improve ankle mobility. Or it could be used after sport or training if you do a lot of running, jumping, and skipping. 
_ 
Treat tight over worked calves with some TLC!

In my practice I often talk about aging successfully without really defining what it means to be successful. 🤔⁣
⁣
I particularly enjoy this quote, because it’s an excellent reminder that your success and my success may look different❗️⁣
⁣
And it’s also a reminder that success is personal, in that it centers on our individual goals, our own personal standards, and our success depends on what we have to use as a means to our success❗️⁣
⁣
Some folks are thrown curveballs in life without any fault of their own. Health conditions are often a part of our journey, not because of choice, but because of heritage. My struggles aren’t your struggles.⁣
⁣
We also must help others,⁣
if we can, to raise their personal standards of success. 💪🏻 ⁣
⁣
Often in our society, the aged look down on themselves and sell themselves short, simply because society has told them that they are in the past. 😔 ⁣
⁣
They have been made to feel inadequate and incapable of more. Often the aging adult is more prejudiced against their own ability to succeed than those around them, and I truly believe that is due to persistent ageism in our culture.❌🚫🛑🤬⁣
⁣
Successful aging starts in youth, but changes can still be made once you start to get into aging adulthood. ⁣
⁣
Believe in yourself, because it’s not all about the destination, it’s about the journey that it took to get there. 🧗🏻‍♂️

Whoopi Rose Monkey is a 6 month collie rescue from Ireland who is sharing her new house with Handsome Harry @houndsonthedowns. Understandably, things are a bit overwhelming for little Whoopi. Her Mum is gradually introducing her to new experiences, sounds and people. Sunday was “Meet 2 Strange Men with White Beards Day”. In between the wriggling, she allowed a lot of work. We may have come in as ‘strange men’ but we certainly went out as her new besties.

Those ‘funny spots’ as people call them – you know the ones….you touch one part of the dog and it sets their leg twitching. If that were me, I wouldn’t find that ‘funny’. Our physical therapy isn’t just about massaging muscles or helping joints but also dealing with fascial tightness. The lipoma was stretching his underlying fascia. It had become skewed. La fascia es un sistema fibroso que conecta, separa y recubre todo el cuerpo, de manera similar a las membranas que separan y conectan los gajos de una naranja 🍊. Este tejido poco conocido tiene un papel muy importante en la manera cómo nos movemos: cuando la fascia está tensa, esta tensión se traduce en menor movilidad, dolor y mayor posibilidad de lesionarse.

This weekend we focused on unwinding the arms, legs, TFL (that wee bugger at the side of the leg/hip!), psoas, and last but not least, the neck...ahhh! 
My body feels so much lighter, loads of tension released, less achy and more loved...bliss!
