Some amazing feedback 😊

My (now 14 year old) Springer/Collie Jackson had become a bit stiff in his hips/back legs in the summer. He then also developed a problem with scraping one of his back paws along the ground. He didn’t have much feeling in it. This was very worrying in an otherwise healthy dog. The vet diagnosed arthritis, spondylosis and possibly an impingement but at his age any operation would have been too risky with no guarantee of success. He was put on strong pain killers but this didn’t help the underlying problem and Jackson was becoming miserable. I found Kirsty on line and thank goodness I did because what she has done for Jackson is amazing. He had become so tight in his body and was compensating for his weakness so the massage was really helpful in reducing the tightness and he became more flexible. It took a little time for him to get used to it. Now he has maintenance massages around every 6 weeks and his dose of painkillers has been greatly reduced. After his massage he thinks he can do anything and likes to show off. It’s lovely to have my happy dog back.

Something that we forget to train and something we also neglect with prehab and rehab.

Mobility/flexability is a key importance to prevent injuries when majority of training consists of the formearm being in flexion, so today I worked on my grip strength on the fat bar, then finished with some rolling of the forearms and stretching post session.

WHAT IS CUPPING?

Your Levator Scapulae is a muscle that lays just underneath your Upper Traps in the corner where your neck meets your shoulder

This muscle is a very busy little thing. It initiates and assists in a lot of your neck movements such as:
👉🏼Lateral Flexion (cute little head tilt)
👉🏼Extension
👉🏼Same side Rotation of the head and neck
(and most importantly, the movement behind the name…)
👉🏼Scapula Elevation

The most common dysfunction to Lev Scap is postural stress and/or activity overload stresses. This can be things like holding the phone 📞 between your shoulder and ear can be a real killer for this bad boy.
People will often complain of having a stiff neck, especially when rotating their head 😖
The production of 💥trigger points💥 in this muscle are very common and can be easily treated with anything from hands on manipulation to dry needling to myofascial release! 🙌🏼

The fun thing (well, what I find fun about it anyway 🤓) is the structure of this muscle. Around the mid belly of it, the fibres actually TWIST! This is what helps with its ability to rotate the head and neck! ☺️

One great self-stretch to do for this is to “sniff ya pit”! 🤔
👉🏼Sit up nice and straight and actually SIT ON the hand of the side your stretching
👉🏼Slowly look across to the OPPOSITE side
👉🏼Once mid-way, tilt your head down and bring your nose to your arm pit
.
You can also stick a 🎾 or a ⚾️ ball in there and do some self-release work too!
👉🏼 place the ball on the medial corner of your Scap (where the distal attachment is)
👉🏼 you can then hold is Static or move around!

OPEN WORKOUT PREP 19.1

Warm up for millions of wall balls and rowing.
1. Thoracic mobility is going to be important so that you are not hunched over during wallballs or putting excess pressure on your low back. Arch over a foam roller for 1-2 minutes.
2. Reinforce mobility in thoracic spine by doing “open book” rotations. Make sure your legs are crossed to stabilize your low back- you should feel this in your pecs and upper spine!
3. Piriformis stretch aka pigeon- improve literal hip/flute flexibility for depth in squats. Make sure your shin in horizontal to your body and not tucked under.
4. Prone T’s and Y’s to activate scapular muscles before you row and throw.

Thoracic mobility is going to be important so that you are not hunched over during wallballs or putting excess pressure on your low back. Arch over a foam roller for 1-2 minutes. 2. Reinforce mobility in thoracic spine by doing “open book” rotations. Make sure your legs are crossed to stabilize your low back- you should feel this in your pecs and upper spine! 3. Piriformis stretch aka pigeon- improve literal hip/flute flexibility for depth in squats. Make sure your shin in horizontal to your body and not tucked under. 4. Hey beautiful people! So rag doll is absolutely one of my favorite poses in yoga, ESPECIALLY after waking up! Here’s a short sequence using rag doll as the base with different variations. I’ll explain from left to right the poses.
-
Rag Doll with folded arms: Bend knees softly until your belly is touching your thighs and let head and arms hang.
Rag doll with hands behind the base of the skull softly tractioning the neck downwards.
Rag doll with hands behind the head with side ways variation to get into different parts of the upper back and side body.
Interlaced hands in rag doll - Bind hands at base of spine and slowly pull away from the back. I find that squeezing my shoulder blades together adjusts the thoracic spine but you don’t have to!
Rag doll twists: Bend one leg while the other one is straight and open the chest and arm in the opposite direction of the bent leg. Use a block if you can’t get your hand to the floor or if its a struggle.
End: Roll the spine up with an engaged midsection…last thing to roll up should be the head and feel free to move with fluidity after this! Happy practicing :) -

I take this into consideration when treating patients. If I can reestablish the joints normal job then that area will heal faster and stronger!

That may be by directly treating the painful region, but in a lot of cases there are multiple regions that are contributing to your pain.
