March is #endometriosisawarenessmonth
This often debilitating condition affects the lives of 1 in 10 women here in Scotland @hood_mag_jen being one of those.
The average diagnosis takes seven years so greater awareness is essential.

From 1 - 8 April super photographer @rankinarchive will showcase new work from a unique collaboration with @standardlifeuk and charity @endometriosis.uk at @stillsedinburgh
Entry to the exhibition is free.

This is an absolute disgrace. We live in a country where people actually have to budget for their healthcare expenses. Think about that for a moment. Through no fault of your own you get sick or in a tragic accident, and suddenly you are underinsured because Congress dismantled the protections given to consumers from such actions by the Affordable Care Act. Now any insurer can offer you something called heath insurance that could be anything BUT health insurance. Welcome to the emergency room, surprise! So we have to budget for health care expense when virtually every other developed and some not so developed countries offer some version of universal heath care. Some even preserving private plans (gasp!). All the while, in the aggregate most countries spend far less per capita on health care, with better outcomes.
Oh yes, I know what you are dying to say..”I don’t want the government in my healthcare!” Our taxes will go up. Yes, they will. But take 10 minutes and do the math. For example my family pays over $18,000 a year just for health insurance. That only gives us the ticket to pay more! Copays, deductibles, non covered expenses, etc. Let’s call it $20k a year. If our taxes went up to a marginal rate of 50%, and we got the kind of care given by day, the National Health Service in the UK, we would still be better off financially. Secondly the government is so entrenched in healthcare it would take decades to undo. Here is a short list-
They decide how many doctors we need, the decide who gets licensed, they decide if a hospital can get a MRI machine and similar equipment, they operate one of the most effective and efficient health insurance programs already - Medicare, beloved by millions, I could go on.
How about we all wake up and demand universal style health care so we stop bragging about how people with a high deductible plan budget more for their healthcare. Oh by the way, United Healthcare, one of the largest health insurers in the US, is a for profit entity. Google on line how much the CEO made last year. #medicareforall #healthcarereform #unitedhealthgroup #nationalhealthservice

The staff of our NHS are truly amazing, all 1.5 million of them. The NHS in England alone deals with a million patients every 36 hours. Every moment of the day they are providing a life saving, life delivering, life supporting service that we take for granted. Everyone in the UK has either themselves, or somebody close to them been helped by this unbelievable organisation. Let's show some support to our men and women of the NHS! 🏥 🇬🇧 @nhsenglandldn

I can safely say it's been a long time coming but the photos are finally up. A lot of work has gone into this project both behind the scenes organising meetings and meeting all inspirational 32 women who work for the NHS and obviously the post production side of things.

It's been such a honor to have worked with Mary Hooper and Anna Barnes at Onward Arts without this project it wouldn't have been feasible from the organisation side of things and from the creative process and overall design on behalf of @ma.hooper1@barnesa003 both inspirational women in my life who don't get enough credit. To all women who've I've met over the last couple of months it's been incredible to listen to your stories and journeys it's been a privilege and something I'll remember in my career for a long time.
This project has hit home for me over last couple
of months as I've always wanted to take photos of something which conveys my beliefs and this project has been perfect for it. Hopefully these photos may resonate with women who are thinking about starting a career in the NHS and might identify with the stories that these influential women have told. Needless to say in England we are incredibly privileged to have free access to health care which is something we can take for granted. The government have made detrimental cuts to the services of the NHS. It's also important to value the NHS on it's 70th anniversary and how vital it is to our country.

Lastly thank you so much to everyone behind the scenes it wouldn't have been feasible without your support and help.
The photos are up at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. If you're around that area feel free to have a look.

 # Mister Perfect
I came across my original Medical Card today. It revealed to me that I must have spent my first months in Great Granny Kate McKay’s house in the Crossroads area of the Ferry (referred to by Mum as “Little Ireland”) before moving down the road into a tenement flat in the notorious Clark Place (also referred to by Mum as “that rat-infested hovel”) and then into our brand new Council house in Rosebery Avenue (named after the fat, pompous Earl himself). But it also reminded me how lucky I had been back then. Lucky, because I was born in the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh (beneath the clock tower, according to Mum) shortly after the introduction of the National Health Service, which meant that both Mum and I received the best of medical attention – for free. Lucky, too, because (again according to Mum) I was rated by the hospital to be a perfectly healthy and perfectly proportioned baby, scoring 10 out of 10 under the system used by doctors at that time to assess the condition of newborns. But what I wonder would I score nowadays, some seventy years later? A perfect 10? Well, maybe 9 and three-quarters. 😉

#mentalhealth. Proud of the post war Labour government a where if the self interest Tories had their way then we'd have no #nationalhealthservice #nhs proud to have contributed tax & national insurance all my adult life to help fund &keep free our #health care. 68 picked up my meds from the pharmacy. Did not know prescription charges are that high or that revenue goes to help fund the #nhs. Horrified at present Tory government no doubt many Mps use private care. Callous disregard for the people and clearly underfunding nhs trying to make it a private business. Can't find money to fund #nhs and cut their budgets drastically and investment lauded as massive are way too low. They can find money to pay the #DUP to keep them in power pay Virgin Care millions for a loss of contract & 34 million to Eurotunnel over the #Brexit ferry company that had no ships & squander millions on their laughable #Brexit "negotiations." Incapable of responsible spending of public money capable of misusing it for vested interest gain. They perpetuate the lie that #Labour government would wreck the economy. Farcical that from a party that took over from Labour and ran on heavy credit tripling the national debt. Tories want a Trump type health system where you only get vital care if you can afford it.

Bit more informed today as I was in hospital over the weekend and it's so much harder to find out the lie of the land.
.
I've had to advocate for myself a lot today...I'm not at my normal hospital and things have not been done here that should have been done or should have been done in a very particular way.
.
I've over 19 years of having my line so I'm well versed in how to deal with issues. I came in with a card from my normal hospital that set out what should be done, How it should be done and that I should be consulted and involved very much in my own care plan.
.
Over the weekend because staff did not know me I was treated classically like I didn't really need to know thing's and that I didn't really know what I was talking about...
.
This morning I phoned my normal hospital to fill them in on how things were going and to advocate for myself so Hospital staff did not infantalise me. I also did the same with the staff here at this hospital. It's great...helps you take the power back, feel empowered and more in control.
.
It's so important to remember that doctors aren't gods...you're allowed to question them, challenge them and discuss with them. Don't let them feel like you have no right to be involved in the treatment of your own body. .

This week’s Sunday Suggestion is more like a #sundayshoutout - and just to emphasise how fantastically lucky we are to have such wonderful NHS services in #Sussex. .

7 weeks ago, my son Winston was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. We were rushed down to The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton where we stayed for a week. Winston LOVED IT. He thought he was at ruddy Centre Parcs. The doctors, nurses and consultants were all fab (swipe to see them playing peek-a-boo and receptionists!) and we are lucky to have such an incredible team at our fingertips. .

The Diabetes team are in touch every week, checking Winston’s data and making changes to his insulin intake, suggesting new routines, checking in. I can call at any hour of the night or day, and they’re there. Winston’s nursery staff were trained by the team so they are now qualified to carb-count, do blood tests and insulin injections. They have also offered to train our friends and family, as everyone who looks after Win will have to know what to do. .

If you ever need an ear or a shoulder, we’re here. We know how it feels to be handed difficult news and we know how it feels to want, desperately, for our children to be healthy. We’re here. If there are any T1 parents out there, come and say hello! It’s all so new to me and I’d love to meet you! #theparenthood #jointheparenthood @jdrf_uk .

Did you know that Young Living has markets all over the world? Product catalogs vary from country to country, for loads of reasons, and here are the oils in the new kit launch in #America recently. But, YL’s worldwide reach is why I call my business A Global Community of Wellness. Gary Young had this vision where these lovely essential oils are accessible and used in every home in the world. In fact, our team has a goal of putting 1 million kits in home across the UK. Why? Because these oils are great tools for our preventive self care. Why? Because our Vitality Live in non-GMO—only company in the world with this certification. Why? Because we are also the only company in the world with the Seed to Seal guarantee. Not sure? Just try them. Use this graphic to get started. If you aren’t happy, return the oils and I will return your money. Does your hospital have a piano in their atrium? Why not?

Six weeks in this new job and I’m happy to say I’ve already made an impression along with bringing improvements to the work. Streamlining process that’s all it’s about. Covered a colleagues MDT meeting this week at short notice and later that morning the chief colorectal surgeon came past my desk to say thank you. You can’t ask for more job satisfaction than that.

A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions and the roots spring up and make new trees.

Got all the feels today. Two visits to our local big hospital this week. It’s a place with a lot of memories for us. Sick kids, long term stays on the paediatric ward, not great memories and yet when I return for a visit my heart is warmed by seeing the same old faces that have been there for over 10 years. Regardless of the place, it’s the community, the people that make a place isn’t it? The small acts of kindness and generosity by the nurses, doctors, the housekeeping peeps, the porter, the coffee house staff... they’re all still there. All still with a smile on their faces. They even recognise you and stop and chat with you ❤️
.
.
.

And then @greenwalnutclare shared her beautiful pottery work and quote today. It’s so true isn’t it? One single act of kindness really can reach out, spread out and make new trees.... ❤️❤️❤️
.
. .
So a day of reflection. A day to remind myself to remember the good times, the happy times and the people who helped along the way. A day to remind myself to always act with dignity, joyfulness, charity, generosity, forgiveness and kindness. To share this wisdom with the next generation. That element of empathy is surely where happiness ultimately stems from.

Not sure a 5 minute tea and muffin break whilst writing some notes and reading my emails counts as a break but I’ll take what I can get 😜 My go to lemon and raspberry muffins from @thefoodmedic are always a winner 👌🏽. . . #NHS #nationalhealthservice #nhsheroes #respiratory #physiotherapy #hospital #ward #busymorning #somuchtodo #solittletime #cuppa #tea #healthy health #lemon #raspberry #muffin #nutrition #healthyrecipie #healthyliving #break #takeabreak #breathe #workingfromhome #vs #reality

Another day another letter. I’ve felt myself getting pissed off again lately at the lack of change implemented by the NHS with regard to preventing baby loss. I continue to see the same stories time and time again about people losing their babies and the substandard care they received from the NHS. Since taking up his post as Secretary of Health @matthancockmp has vowed to reduce baby deaths by 50% by 2025 given the UK’s shamefully high record. I feel 6 years is ridiculous given that there’s immediate changes that could be made. I’m yet to receive a sensible answer as to why low-dose aspirin can’t be prescribed in all pregnancies and how first time pregnancies can be categorised as low-risk given that person has never been pregnant before and it is unknown how the body will react!? To add insult to injury, I’m meant to be receiving better care this time around and my community midwife sent me notes from a 28-week appointment that I’ve never had so I’m not too sure she’s really paying attention to me at all. It’s worrying that even when you’re high risk, errors in recording notes is still prominent. With Ruby, a result from a urinalysis was unable to be accessed by my consultant, meaning it either wasn’t recorded accurately in my notes or was never taken. That could have been the urinalysis that highlighted the early stages of pre-eclampsia and in turn saved my daughters life. Gets a bit tiring when you’re always given the same excuse of them being overstretched - unacceptable excuse if you ask me

My wonderful girl. Our fight for legal and moral justice stepped up yesterday. We are facing a few difficult years but we are doing this together with great support around us. I promised my girl that I would fight for justice for her and I intend to do this with every ounce of strength I have. I am passionate about good care, every single person who steps in to a hospital, a doctors surgery or allows a health care professional, be that physical or mental health in to their life, is worthy and deserving of good care, irrespective of their background. I am a great believer in treating the presenting problem without judgement or bias and I strive for this in my professional capacity. I back our NHS without question, as did my daughter who also worked in the NHS.

As a parent, seeing the future you had dreamed of for your child slip away is heartbreaking, particularly when a catastrophic brain injury, such as that suffered by my daughter, was preventable. For now, we fight and the intention is to seek not only justice but to initiate and guide changes to a system which has sadly failed so very many in recent years, be that due to lack of understanding or prejudice. Shelby's voice and story will be heard and although her future will not be what she or I had hoped, she will help others by ensuring fair, considerate and professional medical treatment to those with a mental health illness. #mentalhealthawareness

What the hey! Let’s just make it International Women’s Week! If we only get one day a year, may as well milk it for all it’s worth 😉💪

This is the statue of Mary Seacole (1805-81) in the garden of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospital on the Southbank. It was unveiled in 2016 thanks to the tireless efforts of the @mary_seacole_trust who were dedicated to erecting the UK’s first memorial statue in honour of a named black woman.
Seacole was a remarkable nurse who fought against adversity and prejudice to help the wounded soldiers of the Crimean War. She is captured here “marching defiantly forward into an oncoming wind, as if confronting head-on some of the personal resistance she had constantly to battle. She carries her bag of medications and poultices towards the scene of battle.”
•
Of Jamaican and Scottish descent, Seacole studied both traditional and Western medicine and came to England in 1854 to help with the Crimean war effort. She was refused by the War Office but went to the Crimea anyway and established her ‘British Hotel’ near Balaclava to provide "comfortable quarters for sick and convalescent officers". She displayed remarkable bravery and also nursed the wounded on the battlefield - sometimes under the hail of gunfire. She is now beginning to be recognised alongside the innovation of her fellow nurse, Florence Nightingale, and this statue is a wonderful testament to her legacy. She’s also currently in the running as the face of our new £50 note!

Just been for a check up and the miracle workers at the #nhs have said the bones healing nicely on my collarbone. The human body is immense! Just one more operation in a couple of months to have the steel work taken out. Just in time for biking season and me to smash it to bits again #brokenbones #recovery #nationalhealthservice

18 years ago I was ill for a few months in late 2000 & was gifted this cherry tree in the Spring of the following year when I went back to work. It blooms & fills my garden view with a gorgeous #pink - at a time when there isn’t much colour around & it reminds me how lucky I was 🙏🏼 #nhs #nationalhealthservice #breastcancersurvivor #hope #recovery

Repost from @darrenfearnley using @RepostRegramApp - 'The how great is NHS post'
We should be taking Baby Rowan home later today after 4 days in the care of the NHS (and a lot of help from some midwifery students from Huddersfield Uni). I can't express my gratitude enough for the national health service, we are incredibly lucky to have such a service in the UK. Cherish it those who have it. ✊

What’s the funniest book you’ve read recently? 😂
•
This book is hands down the funniest book I’ve read! Some of the stories had me in stitches, others had my jaw dropped open in shock 😳
•
I feel blessed to have the NHS available to me and this book highlights that feeling even further. If you’re in a medical profession you’ll find the book easier to understand, but it’s explained very well for if you are not. Anyone can read it. I’d recommend it especially to someone studying a medial subject or working in the field as well as someone who feels they have fallen out of love with the NHS. It’ll show you just how hard they all work to keep us healthy and with a free health service 🏩

19 years ago a very clever man Mr Stuart Nicholson diagnosed me with a very Rare type of bowel cancel. He had never seen a case in his 25 years as a cancer specialist, but he spotted it.... He removed the tumour in the January. I was so poorly I couldn’t have the rest of the surgery for another 6 weeks. ( if you look up Audrey Hepburn and what she died of it was the same cancer ) ... only 1 in 3 million people get it.
So 19 years ago today I went into surgery again to to have a massive section of my bowel removed. This surgery was a precaution, they had no idea of knowing if it had spread, the only way they would know was when they checked the lymph nodes as they did the surgery, I couldn’t take the risk of not having it. I’m so glad I did because it was on the move. Heading for my liver. This surgery saved my life. So today I am Officially 19 years free of cancer. I can’t thank the NHS and my fantastic consultant Mr Nicholson enough for what they did.

Here’s to life and living it to the full 🥂🍾🥂 #nhs #nationalhealthservice #cancer #beatencancer #bowelcancer #carcinoidcancer

In the wake of the #Tavistock clinic in #England , the #Italian #NationalHealthService is allowing kids to become transgender through #triptorelin , which is very dangerous. Every #taxpayer will have to contribute to this expense. Therefore, the NWO #plans are sadly being executed.

@publichealthengland have launched a new campaign today to increase the uptake of women attending their cervical screening ‘Cervical Screening Saves Lives’.
.
This is your friendly reminder to please book an appointment if you have received your letter (aged 25) and are yet to go, or if you’re due for your next appointment (every 3 years).
.
I had a very pleasant appointment in 2017. My nurse was so lovely and I went expecting it to hurt and it really DIDN’T. Not even a little bit! If anything, it is just a bit odd that someone you’ve never met before is having a good old look down there 😂 But let’s be realistic, these are PROFESSIONALS. They have seen THOUSANDS of vaginas. Mine was an ex midwife for YEARS and I quickly realised she’s never going to remember mine no matter how embarrassed I may be 😊 I was in and out in minutes and got on with the rest of my day. I had a letter a couple weeks later saying everything was normal and that was that.
.
Please do go and also encourage your friends and family to also go (men please also encourage the women in your life) you’ll never regret actually going but you may regret it if you don’t.

So myself and my baby haven’t been in the best of health for the last couple of months, the NHS in crisis is a reality and we are struggling to get the care we need. It would be so easy to slip in to bad habits of feeling pessimistic and believe me I have. There is no greater stress than your poorly baby especially when you are not well either. I have had to actively think about the bright side whilst we wait to answer the “what ifs” when we see a consultant for our daughter towards the end of the month.
I’ve been unable to keep up with my blog during this time but I am working on some ideas for future posts.
Any advice on coping with poorly babies 👶 would be much appreciated as I feel incredibly stressed. #poorlymommy #poorlybaby #babies #immunedisorder #kidneyproblems #postpartumillness #6monthspostpartum #abdominalpain #postpregnancyproblems #tinybaby #hospital #wellness #health #nhs #nhsincrisis #nationalhealthservice #care

Was proper nervous when my smear results came in the post a few days ago! In terms of abnormal cells I'm all fine but they did say I have HPV. I found the letter not hugely informative and therefore a bit scary but after some research- essentially the virus is so common and there are usually next to no symptoms. Your body clears the infection usually within the year just like a cold. So instead of my 3 year check it's a check in a year to see if its cleared. If it doesn't clear within 3 years theres a higher chance of cervical cancer. That's why its imperative you girls go for your smears! You may not have abnormal cells but it's so important to keep a check on other things that may lead to cancer in the future

So please please go and get it done if it's due. Look after yourself! Fingers crossed mine clears 🤞

Was proper nervous when my smear results came in the post a few days ago! In terms of abnormal cells I'm all fine but they did say I have HPV.
