TAIPEI: At least 17 people have died after an express train derailed and flipped over on a popular coastal route in Taiwan on Sunday.
The Taiwan Railways Administration confirmed 17 people had been killed and said 132 people had also been injured in the accident in northeastern Yilan county.
Authorities have not confirmed if any passengers remain trapped alive inside the train. Images from the site showed the Puyuma Express train completely derailed and lying zig-zagged across the track.
All of the train’s eight carriages had derailed and five had flipped onto their side at Xinma station, the railways administration said.
Taiwan authorities said the accident had happened at 4:50 pm local time (0850 GMT) with no cause yet given.
The railways administration said there had been 366 people on board the service en route to the southern city of Taitung.
The defence ministry said it had sent in 120 soldiers to help the rescue. President Tsai Ing-wen described the accident as a “major tragedy” in a Tweet Sunday evening. “My thoughts are with all the victims and their families,” she added.

FRANKFURT/SEOUL: Audi’s first electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) will hit showrooms four weeks later than planned because of a software development issue, a spokesman for the German luxury car brand said on Sunday.
The spokesman said Audi’s e-tron midsize SUV faced delay because the carmaker needs new regulatory clearance for a piece of software that was modified during the development process.
Audi staged a global launch of the e-tron in San Francisco last month as part of its effort to expand the market for premium electric vehicles and grab a share from California-based Tesla, which has had the niche largely to itself.

The e-tron delays were first reported by German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, citing sources close to the company. The paper said delivery could be delayed by several months.
The paper also said Audi was locked in price negotiations with LG Chem, the South-Korean supplier of batteries for its electric vehicles, which wants to increase prices by about 10 percent because of high demand.
LG Chem supplies electric vehicle batteries for Audi, its parent Volkswagen and Daimler.
An LG Chem official declined to comment on the report, citing the confidentiality of its relationship with a client.

Henry suffers defeat on Monaco return, PSG seal perfect 10

Thierry Henry suffered defeat in his first match as a head coach when his 10-man Monaco side slumped to a 2-1 loss at Strasbourg on Saturday to drop into the Ligue 1 relegation zone, while Paris Saint-Germain eased to a 10th straight victory to start their title defence.
The principality club have failed to win in 11 games in all competitions since the opening weekend of the French top-flight season, and are only above bottom team Guingamp on goal difference.
Monaco, who were runners-up to PSG last season, are now 24 points adrift of the reigning champions after they cruised to a 5-0 thrashing of Amiens at the Parc des Princes despite resting several key players.
A dreadful error by Monaco’s third-choice goalkeeper Seydou Sy gifted Strasbourg midfielder Adrien Thomasson an early opener, and substitute Samuel Grandsir was sent off midway through the second half.
Lebo Mothiba doubled the advantage, and a late Youri Tielemans penalty was a mere consolation for the 2017 Ligue 1 title-winners.
Henry — a World Cup winner and Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer who started his playing career at Monaco — made four changes to the team which lost to Rennes before the international break, with former Manchester City and Inter Milan striker Stevan Jovetic restored up front.
But his new side got off to the worst possible start as they handed Strasbourg a 17th-minute lead.
Kenny Lala’s long ball forward was nodded hopefully towards goal by Thomasson, but Senegalese ‘keeper Sy — who was only playin ...

A quote @bleaselaura shared ages ago with S&P members about nutrition. Its a gooden though👏 And so very true. We’re all reluctant to keeping it safe, stick with familiarities. Why wouldn’t we? Who doesn’t love being in their comfort zone? Change is scary as hell. Why? Is it because we’re thinking of all the negative possibilities? Afraid of failure? Concerned what others might think? I’ve always had an optimistic outlook and could never life with the “WHAT IF” monkey sitting on my shoulder. What if I do succeed how happy will I be? What if i do tell someone how I feel and they feel the same? (You get my drift). So many people for example have asked me in the past “OMG you’ve been to so many places wish I could do that”. Sure I have doubts and set backs but it’s never stopped me going through this never ending Big Dipper ride of Life (too cheesy?😅). Put yourself out there!!

FAILURE IS PROOF YOU’RE TRYING!
👊🏼
When you fail, you have two choices. Let it defeat you and walk away OR (————>) Dust yourself off, and try again!! 💪🏼
Let my amazing (11 yo) daughter @gymnastd513 be an example. Her hand slipped and she crashed HARD! Did that stop her?!? NO!! She wiped the few tears away as she chalked up and got right back up on that bar. 🤸🏼‍♂️ This is just a small example of her strength and determination. Sooooo flipping proud! .

SYDNEY: The pregnant wife of Britain’s Prince Harry, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, will cut back her busy schedule as the royal couple enter the last week-and-a-half of their tour to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.
Meghan curtailed her activities after attending the opening ceremony for the Invictus Games on Saturday night at Sydney’s Opera House. A thunderstorm delayed the opening for more than an hour but did not dampen the spirits of competitors from 18 nations who watched a musician play a didgeridoo in a traditional Aboriginal welcoming ceremony. “You are the role models to us all, and you are going to put on one hell of a show over the next week,” Prince Harry told the competitors in his address.
The Invictus Games are athletic competitions involving wounded military personnel and have been credited for fostering hope and resilience in people traumatized during conflict.
“Be inspired, get excited. Allow the example of service and determination that you all see to change something big or small in your own lives,” said Prince Harry to rousing applause from 500 athletes and a supportive crowd that filled the Opera House stairs, according to video of the speech on the British royal family’s Twitter account.

Karachi Kings’ mega talent hunt program, Khiladi Ki Khoj concluded on Sunday with open trials in Sadiqabad at Jinnah Sports Complex Army Stadium.
It turned out to be another successful talent hunt drive from Karachi Kings as they shortlisted dozens of talented players from eight different cities, who will be groomed for a higher level of cricket.

Team Director Rashid Latif was extremely happy with the response he got from the young cricketers of all the eight cities.
He appreciated Karachi Kings for their efforts for unearthing hidden gems in different parts of the country and hailed the hard work of selectors, who took trials of hundreds and thousands of budding cricketers during the campaign.
“Selectors have stood in the heat all day to take trials, it is not easy, plus driving for hours to reach the next destination is worth praising,” said Rashid Latif.
Karachi Kings’ team manager, Naved Rasheed had all praises for coaches and selectors and stated that he has never seen such a dedicated team.

ISLAMABAD: An international symposium titled ‘Creating a Water Secure Pakistan,’ arranged by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Saturday made 20 recommendations to overcome water shortage in the country.
The World Resources Institute maintained that Pakistan is at number 23 out of the top 33 countries which will get water-stressed by 2040 while the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources has opined that Pakistan may run dry by 2025 if the present conditions continue.
Following are the recommendations made by the international conference:-
1. The potential of Pakistan’s part of the Indus Basin has to be realized through priority actions that need to be taken on an immediate basis. Maintaining the integrity of the Indus Basin is a serious and important responsibility of the Federation as well as the Provinces, including all other administrative units and above all, the people of Pakistan.
2. It is imperative for Pakistan to invest in supply augmentation (dams and reservoirs) and ensure better utilization of its groundwater, adopting appropriate water technologies (water recycling, desalinization, and water harvesting) and manage consumption and use of water (controlling water demand and pricing) and do all of this under the principles of mutual trust and benefit sharing.
3. International Water Law should be taken advantage of by consistently putting forward Pakistan’s perspective before various international forums and Pakistan’s strategy regarding implementation of the Indus Water T ...

BEIJING: China must balance the need for stable growth while managing risks and maintain a prudent and neutral monetary policy, the State Council, the country’s cabinet, said on Sunday following a meeting of top economic and financial policymakers.
Data released on Friday showed the world’s second largest economy growing at its weakest pace since the global financial crisis, underscoring challenges for Beijing amid an escalating trade war with the United States and sluggish domestic demand.
The State Council Financial Stability and Development Commission held a special meeting on Saturday led by Vice Premier Liu He to discuss fending off financial risks, according to a statement published by the State Council.
Senior officials in the commission said China must properly balance needs for growth, de-leveraging and strengthening supervision, the statement said.
China has been gradually easing monetary and fiscal policy in recent months to support growth. The central bank earlier in October announced its fourth reserve requirement ratio cut of 2018 to cut funding costs, while the government has signalled it would increase infrastructure spending.
Regulators have emphasized in recent months the need to ensure proper funding support for smaller companies. Sunday’s statement on the state council commission’s meeting said China will focus on resolving financing difficulties of smaller firms and the private sector, adding that loans to promising compani ...

MOSCOW: Withdrawing from a Cold War-era nuclear weapons treaty with Russia as President Donald Trump has announced he plans to do is a dangerous step, Russia’s deputy foreign minister warned on Sunday.
“This would be a very dangerous step that, I’m sure, not only will not be comprehended by the international community but will provoke serious condemnation,” deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov told TASS state news agency.
The treaty is “significant for international security and security in the sphere of nuclear arms, for the maintenance of strategic stability,” he stressed.
Russia condemned what he called attempts by the US to gain concessions “through a method of blackmail”, he added.
If the US continues to act “clumsily and crudely” and unilaterally back out of international agreements “then we will have no choice but to undertake retaliatory measures including involving military technology,” Ryabkov told RIA Novosti news agency.
“But we would not want to get to this stage,” he added.
On Saturday, Trump announced US plans to leave the three-decade-old Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, known as the INF, signed in 1987 by the then US president Ronald Reagan.
“We’re the ones who have stayed in the agreement and we’ve honored the agreement, but Russia has not unfortunately honored the agreement, so we´re going to terminate the agreement and we´re going to pull out,” said Trump.

Striker Mohamed Salah scored his first goal in four matches to give Liverpool a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday, lifting the Merseyside club back up to second in the table.
Salah scored after 20 minutes and it remained the only goal of the game as Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp condemned his close friend and fellow German in the opposite dugout David Wagner to a sixth defeat in nine league matches this season.
The breakthrough came when Xherdan Shaqiri crafted himself some space to play a precise pass to Salah in the area. With one touch, the Egyptian found the bottom far corner for his fourth goal of the season and 50th overall in English football.
Huddersfield rallied and almost pulled it back, with a long-range effort from Jonathan Hogg hitting the post and Philip Billing’s distant freekick curling just wide. They then had a penalty appeal turned down for a handball by James Milner.
Huddersfield fans thought they had seen their team score their first home goal in six months when Alex Pritchard latched onto a high ball and dinked it past goalkeeper Alisson just before the break. However, the strike was ruled out for offside.
The hosts’ intensity slightly dropped after halftime, although Steve Mounie had a chance with less than 10 minutes left when the ball fell to him in the box. However, he shinned it over from eight yards out.

ELKO, Nev./ISTANBUL: U.S. President Donald Trump joined European leaders on Saturday in pushing Saudi Arabia for more answers about Jamal Khashoggi after Riyadh changed its story and acknowledged that the journalist died more than two weeks ago at its consulate in Istanbul.
Saudi Arabia said early on Saturday that Khashoggi, a critic of the country’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, had died in a fight inside the building.
Germany called that explanation “inadequate” and questioned whether countries should sell arms to Saudi Arabia, while France and the European Union urged an in-depth investigation to find out what happened to the Washington Post columnist after he entered the consulate on Oct. 2 for documents for his marriage.
Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi, a Saudi national and U.S. resident, was killed inside the consulate by a team of Saudi agents and his body cut up.
The Khashoggi case has caused international outrage and frayed political and business ties between Western powers and U.S. ally Saudi Arabia, the world’s No.1 oil exporter.
Asked during a trip to Nevada if he was satisfied that Saudi officials had been fired over Khashoggi’s death, Trump said: “No, I am not satisfied until we find the answer. But it was a big first step, it was a good first step. But I want to get to the answer.”
In an interview with the Washington Post, Trump said that “obviously there’s been deception, and there’s been lies.”

ISLAMABAD: The PTI government has decided to again extend the scope of its newly launched ‘Naya Pakistan Housing Programme’ to add two more cities from southern Punjab: Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffargarh.

It was a day of fun workshops and learning for me today, starting with a family wander along our beach with Kirsten from @milkwood_permaculture on a kids seaweed walk. I’ve been slowly learning about seaweed for a while now, but the wander and the brilliant chapter from the #milkwoodbook have really helped take my understanding and confidence up a notch. Then this afternoon I visited the CWA rooms for a sock knitting workshop with @bombedyarns. I was a sock designer in another life, but I’ve never actually knitted a pair before! Sock knitting is something I’ve wanted to learn for a while, so we can avoid synthetic socks and so the owlets can have some comfy, warm tootsies. It’s not going to be a speedy or easy process for me, with my tremor (which is through the roof right now with busy days and not so sleep filled nights), but they were so patient and encouraging, I may just get there and have the skill tucked away for steadier days. Learning new skills has been such an important part of waste free living for us. And there’s nothing quite like learning alongside good people and having great chats. A happy day indeed. ☀️🌿🧦

☀️🌿🧦 . . . #learnallthethings #seaweedforaging #socknitting #community #newskills #wastefreeliving #zerowasteliving #zerowaste #slowliving #permaculture #ourmagicbeach

Ronaldo celebrates landmark goal but Juve’s perfect run broken

ROME: Cristiano Ronaldo scored but wasteful Juventus had to settle for a 1-1 stalemate at home to Genoa to end the Italian champions’ perfect start to the season on Saturday.
With eight Serie A wins and two in the Champions League Juve were all set to extend that fine run when Ronaldo put Massimiliano Allegri’s men into a first-half lead.
But Juve were made to pay for failing to convert a hatful of chances when Daniel Bessa headed in a second-half equaliser.
Ronaldo, despite the turmoil of explosive rape allegations that surfaced before the international break, notched up his fifth goal for his new employers since his headline move from Real Madrid in the 18th minute, ironically helped by a mistake from Genoa’s top-scoring Polish striker Krzysztof Piatek.
A communications mix-up saw Piatek leave Joao Cancelo’s blocked shot for his keeper, but the loose ball fell at Ronaldo’s feet and he tapped in to an empty net.
This was the 33-year-old’s 400th career goal in Europe’s top five leagues, making him the first player to reach that tally.
Lionel Messi is next best on 389.
Ronaldo, who returns to Old Trafford on Tuesday to face his old club Manchester United, would have bagged a double shortly after but his low shot was denied by Genoa keeper Ionut Radu’s diving save.
With Genoa struggling to contain the lively Cancelo down the right Juve were firmly in control, their only regret at the break being they weren’t further in front.

Messi fractures arm as Barcelona register victory

BARCELONA: Lionel Messi is expected to be out for three weeks with a fractured right arm but his last contribution was to help send Barcelona back to the top of La Liga on Saturday.
Messi scored and then went off injured as Barca beat Sevilla 4-2 at Camp Nou, in a six-goal thriller that never looked like ending in anything other than a home win.
Any joy at jumping above in-form Sevilla, however, was tarnished by Messi’s injury, which will now rule him out of next weekend’s Clasico against Real Madrid.
A Barcelona club statement read: “Tests carried out on Leo Messi have confirmed that he has a fracture of the radial bone in his right arm. He will be out for approximately three weeks.”
It means Messi will also miss the Champions League match at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday, and probably the return trip to Italy on November 6, as well as league games against Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano in between.
“It is clear it is a blow,” Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said. “We know what he gives us and we know what he does to the opposition.
“We have to prepare ourselves, it is clear we are going to notice the loss of Messi but we have players that can cover.”
Messi fell to the ground following a tussle with Sevilla’s Franco Vazquez and, as his right hand tried to cushion the landing, his elbow appeared to buckle.
Messi was helped off the pitch by medical staff and, despite having his right arm heavily strapped, he was finally substituted in the 26th minute.

Remains of more than 60 babies, fetuses found stashed in Detroit funeral home

The remains of more than 60 infants and fetuses were found stashed in a Detroit funeral home, police said on Friday, calling the discovery “deeply disturbing.”
The incident comes about a week after the badly decomposed bodies of 11 babies were found hidden in a false ceiling at a different funeral home in the Michigan city.
No connection between the two cases has yet been established, Detroit’s police chief said. He added city, state and federal investigators were looking to form a task force to investigate the improper storage of human remains.
Unrefrigerated boxes containing about 36 sets of remains were recovered from the Perry Funeral Home along with another 27 sets of remains in a freezer, police said.
“This is deeply disturbing,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig told reporters on Friday. “I have never seen anything like this in my 41-1/2 years (on the force), ever.”
Investigators are working to establish ages and identities.
An official with Perry Funeral Home, which offers burial and cremation services, declined to comment on the incident.
The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs said in a statement it revoked the funeral home’s license and shut down the facility after inspectors “found heinous conditions and negligent conduct at the home.”
Police have also launched an investigation into the now defunct Cantrell Funeral Home, where the remains of the 11 babies were uncovered last week after authorities received an anonymous letter le ...

Pakistan opens border with Afghanistan after two-day closure

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Sunday opened Pak-Afghan border crossing points at Chaman and Torkham after temporary closure owing to parliamentary election in Afghanistan.
The border crossings remained closed for two days due to the election in the war-ravaged country.
Earlier on Friday, Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal in a statement said that the crossing points have been closed on the Afghan request.
The spokesperson said the decision has been taken to support Afghanistan in smooth conduct of upcoming parliamentary elections
Dr Muhammad Faisal said both the crossing points will remain closed for all kinds of traffic except emergency cases.
Meanwhile, Afghans unable to vote in Saturday’s parliamentary election after hundreds of polling stations failed to open were given another chance to cast their ballot on Sunday after voting times were extended despite security threats and warnings of fraud.
Around three million Afghans voted on Saturday, election officials said but across the country there were complaints that polling stations remained closed, often because staff failed to turn up.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan issued a statement saying it was encouraged by the high numbers who voted on Saturday, many of whom endured long delays due to technical and organizational problems.
“Those eligible voters who were not able to cast their vote, due to technical issues, deserve the right to vote,” it said.
