Depression is described as a ‘low mood or a loss of pleasure in everything you do for more than 2 weeks’. Depression can be mild, moderate or severe. 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Severity is graded by the presence of other symptoms:
1. Weight loss or weight gain
2. Sleep difficulties - not sleeping enough, trouble getting off to sleep of waking in the early hours. Or problems with sleeping more than normal.
3. Feeling agitated, anxious or the opposite, feeling more slow than normal
4. Feeling tired 
5. Feeling worthless or guilty 
6. Poor concentration
7. Recurrent thoughts of suicide

Over the past 4 months I have embarked on a personal goal to get into the best shape I’ve ever been in and work on my strength. Throughout this time I’ve totally changed my eating habits by counting calories and surprisingly this has improved my relationship with food. WARNING - CALORIE COUNTING IS NOT FOR EVERYONE AND RARELY A LONG TERM THING. For me, it has taught me how to balance my intake vs my energy expenditure AND given me so much freedom to include nutrient dense foods as well as so called ‘bad’ foods. ..

It’s Monday morning again! The clocks have gone back and summer is officially over. It’s time to dig out our warm clothes and get cosy in front of the fire. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
As a GP with an interest in dermatology I look at many different skin lesions on a daily basis and refer them on to Dermatology if I am concerned they are skin cancer.

Life is busy and it can be hard to find the time to eat healthily. A diet full of fresh fruit and veg provides us with a wide source of nutrients, vitamins and protein that is so important for our mental health, physical health, our skin and our energy levels. Eating healthily means I can exercise more and train harder. 🏃🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🚴🏼‍♀️🧘🏼‍♀️🏋🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🚴🏼‍♀️🧘🏼‍♀️🏋🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️
So here is a very simple little tip that I use. It’s really not rocket-science and I am sorry if this sounds so obvious but it has really helped me eat more healthily when I am busy so I wanted to share it. 🥗🥑🥒🥗🥑🥒🥗🥑🥒🥗
At the beginning of the week I make a massive ‘exciting salad’ that I keep in the fridge. It is instant tasty healthy food. It’s great for putting in a lunch box and taking to work or to add to dinner during the week. And when it runs out I just top it up.
🌽🍅🥑🌽🍅🥑🌽🍅🥑🌽
So fill a massive bowl with a rainbow of chopped veg (spinach, lettuce, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions, mangetout etc). 🥦🥑🥕🥦🥑🌽🥦🥑🥕🥦🥑🌽
Add in some exciting stuff like beetroot, avocado, kidney beans, boiled eggs, sweetcorn, pine nuts, feta cheese. ❤️👍🏻❤️👍🏻❤️👍🏻❤️👍🏻❤️👍🏻❤️
It’s delicious, filling and healthy. Happy days xxx

Hi everyone, this campaign has been brought to my attention, please have a look and support Ben West. In January 2018 Ben West lost his younger brother Sam to suicide. Sam was just 15. 💙
Ben is campaigning for Mental Health First Aid to be a compulsory part of teacher training. 💙
Mental Health First Aid teaches members of the public to recognise someone who is in a mental health crisis and to support them until professional help arrives.
💙
Suicide is totally preventable and is the biggest killer of men under the age of 50. 
Please support and share, and hopefully more unnecessary deaths can be prevented.

|| CHICKEN & EDAMAME BEAN PASTA ||

Pasta bake is one of my all time favourites ❤️ As an alternative to pasta I sometimes use bean or pea pastas which have a slightly different taste and usually better quality nutrition - this one is super high in protein ☀️.
..
| Ingredients |
🔹 4 x chicken breasts chopped into cubes
🔹 200g edamame bean pasta (or any last of your choice)
🔹 1 x tin tomatoes
🔹 1 x leek
🔹 1 x courgette 🔹 10 x asparagus spears (ish)
🔹 2 tsp smoked paprika
🔹 2-3 garlic cloves chopped
🔹 glug of soy sauce to taste
🔹 sprinkling of cheese (as much as you like 🧀 ..
| Method |
🔸 Set oven to 170degs 🔸 fry the chopped leeks and chicken in coconut oil until the chicken is sealed/no longer pink, add garlic and smoked paprika
🔸 add the tinned tomatoes and soy sauce - cook for 5 mins
🔸 in a large ‘lasagne dish’, spread out the pasta and sprinkle over the chopped courgettes
🔸 add on top the tomato and chicken mix, ensure the pasta is covered
🔸 bake for 15 mins with a cover of tin foil on
🔸 remove and stir so all completely mixed in - sprinkle with cheese and put back in the oven without the tin foil for a further 15 mins 🔸 serve on a bed of spinach 🌱 ..

|| CHICKEN & EDAMAME BEAN PASTA || .. Pasta bake is one of my all time favourites ❤️ As an alternative to pasta I sometimes use bean or pea pastas which have a slightly different taste and usually better quality nutrition - this one is super high in protein ☀️. .. | Ingredients | 🔹 4 x chicken breasts chopped into cubes 🔹 200g edamame bean pasta (or any last of your choice) 🔹 1 x tin tomatoes 🔹 1 x leek 🔹 1 x courgette 🔹 10 x asparagus spears (ish) 🔹 2 tsp smoked paprika 🔹 2-3 garlic cloves chopped 🔹 glug of soy sauce to taste 🔹 sprinkling of cheese (as much as you like 🧀 .. | Method | 🔸 Set oven to 170degs 🔸 fry the chopped leeks and chicken in coconut oil until the chicken is sealed/no longer pink, add garlic and smoked paprika 🔸 add the tinned tomatoes and soy sauce - cook for 5 mins 🔸 in a large ‘lasagne dish’, spread out the pasta and sprinkle over the chopped courgettes 🔸 add on top the tomato and chicken mix, ensure the pasta is covered 🔸 bake for 15 mins with a cover of tin foil on 🔸 remove and stir so all completely mixed in - sprinkle with cheese and put back in the oven without the tin foil for a further 15 mins 🔸 serve on a bed of spinach 🌱 .. . . . # healthyrecipe #healthfood #foodismedicine #lifestylemedicine #racgp #prevention #foodislife #wholehealth #nhsgp #functionalmedicine #gutmicrobiome

🥗 cod fillet (approx 100g) 🥗 1tsp pesto
🥗 125g Brown rice (cooked) I used Tilda ready cooked for ease today 🥗 1/2 leek 🥗 1-2 garlic cloves 🥗 1/2 tbsp coconut oil
🥗 mixed salad leaves
🥗 shredded beetroot
🥗 optional - add any extra salad bits, sprinkle of crushed nuts, seeds, dressing etc

| Method |
🌟 preheat oven to 180degs
🌟 place cod onto a sheet of tin foil, spread the pesto over the top, wrap tin foil around to create a little closed tent (ensure sealed but room to steam cook)
🌟 place on a baking tray and cook for 18 mins
🌟 chop leek into discs and fry in the coconut oil and garlic 🌟 add brown rice and heat for 5 mins
🌟 prepare salad on the plate, spoon on rice and leek mix and too with the baked cod

CROUPY COUGH 
It’s that time of year again when we start getting more coughs and colds. One infection I see a lot of in my surgery is Croup. As a mum I can fully understand how worrying croup can be to parents. 😷😷😷😷😷😷😷😷😷😷😷😷
Here are 10 facts about croup:
1. Croup is an upper respiratory infection most commonly caused by a virus 🤧
2. It’s very common in young children 👶🏼
3. Boys are affected more than girls👫
4. There is often a characteristic ‘barking cough’🐶
5. It is self-limiting and therefore needs no treatment, and typically 90% of children recover within 2 days💊
6. Symptoms are often worse at night🙄
7. Sitting upright may help with symptoms ⬆️
8. Humidifying the air with steam or running a warm shower may help symptoms🚿
9. Most cases are mild and are managed at home 🏠
10. Severe cases are uncommon but if your child is becoming distressed, struggling to breath, or looking blue or pale then please seek urgent medical advice 🚑

How is the menopause diagnosed? ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
For most women over the age of 45 with classic menopause symptoms no investigations are needed and the diagnosis is made on the history alone. 💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫
You may need blood tests or a scan if your symptoms are unusual or if an alternative diagnosis needs to be excluded. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A woman is termed ‘post-menopausal’ if she is over 50 and has not had a period for 1 year or over 45 and not had a period for 2 years.

It’s that time of year again and the Flu Vaccines are in! 💊💊💊💊💊💊💊💊💊💊💊💊For most of us Flu is annoying and unpleasant and will clear up on its own after a week or two. But flu can be much more severe in people who are at risk. These include the elderly and young children, people with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems. 💉💉💉💉💉💉💉💉💉💉💉
You can get a flu jab on the NHS if you are:
1. 65 and over 
2. Under 65 with underlying health condition 
3. pregnant
4. a child aged 2 and 3

The most important medication of the day #AttemptedSelfDestructionByThyroid ... It all started when I had really bad #anxiety symptoms and then later #fainting and #FeelingFaint this lasted almost 5 years unchecked.... Then eventually I needed to get something done about it, I went docs and they said that it was anxiety so I was referred to @nhs #mentalhealth team Self Help after 6 months of going I was discharged and sent on my way this is when the fainting and dizzy spells got worse over a period of 8 months so I went back to my #NHSGP and he suggested it may be #hyperglycaemia #Overactivethyroid or worst case #diabetes, after a quick #bloodtest it was confirmed to be hyperactive thyroid! but he couldnt give me medication immediately as my liver was being systematically destroyed by the over production of #thyroxine so back to the hospital immediately, after a year of being on #carbimazole (thyroxine blocker) and propranolol (beta blocker to calm the heart rate and the anxiety brought on by too much thyroxine) I was reffered to a radiology hospital to recieve #radioiodinetherapy to kill the t #hyroid now im a #Humanpincushion having monthly bloodtests and a healthy dose of #levothyroxine #littletrooper

It is ‘Back-to-School’ and in our house we are gearing up for a new Autumn term. The one thing I dread is when my children get Head lice. 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜
Head lice are insects that live in our hair and feed on our blood. They are dark in colour, approx 1-4mm long with wings but they can’t fly. The Nits are their eggs that are stuck onto the individual hair shaft. 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜
Head Lice are passed from head to head so keeping your child’s hair short or tying it back can reduce transmission. Comb through your child’s hair regularly to check for head lice. Current advice is to treat only if you see live head lice and if one individual is affected then the whole household should be treated.

Treatment includes Wet Combing and Medicated shampoos. These vary in cost and personal preference but all have good effect if used correctly. ❤️💙

GYNAE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

September is Gynae Cancer Awareness Month.

This month @eveappeal are campaigning for the next generation of children to be taught about the signs and symptoms of cancer in school as part of the curriculum.

The aim is to encourage children to understand their bodies, respect their health and know what is ‘normal’. The aim is for our children (boys and girls) to feel comfortable to communicate their concerns especially about ‘embarrassing issues’ and this could hopefully help prevent cancer later in their lives. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 💕THE RESEARCH 
A survey was conducted by One Poll in August. 1,000 UK parents of 11 to 16-year-olds took part. It revealed: 💕
• Nearly a third of UK parents do not feel knowledgeable about the symptoms of gynaecological cancers – and nearly half don’t feel their children have a basic knowledge of these cancers either.
💕
• Over half of UK parents think that a cancer education awareness programme should include gynaecological awareness
Over a third also strongly feel that children should be encouraged to talk about the signs and symptoms of cancer. 💕
• Parents would prefer that boys and girls should be taught about body issues together. 💕
• Over half of the respondents felt that boys should be taught about gynae health issues. When asked why, they responded that it would be useful for them to know for possible future partners or friends.

Hair loss after pregnancy is very common and occurs around 4-9 months after giving birth. It is called Telogen Effluvium and is due to your oestrogen levels dropping. This settles on its own over a few months. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Normally your hair is 90% growing (anagen phase) and 10% resting (telogen phase) and you shed around 100 hairs in the day. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
During Telogen Effluvium there is a shift of hairs into the resting phase (around 30%) and so you can shed up to around 300 hairs in the day

What a fantastic day at Longleat. My family and I are so grateful to Dreams&Wishes. We all had a blast and it always makes me happy to see Tora enjoy herself. Sometimes it can be isolating to have a child with a serious condition so it was lovely to have a day out with other families who I can relate to. 
As Tony Curtis Mbe mentioned yesterday, I am now an executive board member of this charity and hopefully I can offer something of value given my experience both as a doctor and a mother of a child under the care of the neuro-oncologist. If anyone ever needs to talk I am more than happy to listen and be there to support other families. 
As a side note, I am so proud of Tora touching this snake. For the first time able to do something I can’t do! As a GP with an interest in Dermatology I see all the Skin queries within my surgery and I use my Dermatoscope to look closely at moles and other lesions. I have recently seen and referred a number of patients who have been diagnosed with Malignant Melanomas, the most aggressive form of skin cancer. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
It’s so important that we are aware of our skin as if a melanoma is caught early then it can be curable. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

As a GP with an interest in Dermatology I see all the Skin queries within my surgery and I use my Dermatoscope to look closely at moles and other lesions.
