The Trump administration’s policies are harming children every single day. “‘Photos obtained exclusively by CNN show migrants at the McAllen, Texas, Border Patrol station over the weekend, many of whom are children, sleeping on the ground on rocks and covered by Mylar blankets.

A baby bottle filled with milk can be seen in one photo next to a child sleeping outside on dirt, and in another, a woman is seen sitting on rocks leaning against a wall clutching a child.

In others, migrants are seen seemingly wandering the premises, which has four temporary tents to accommodate the swell of migrants approaching the US-Mexico border. One photo shows an agent holding a megaphone in a sea of migrants outside of the station.

The photos came from a source who has access to the facility and was disturbed by the conditions over the weekend. Customs and Border Protection has confirmed the images are of the McAllen border station. "Nobody, no matter who you are, where you are from should spend an hour like this. This is the United States of America. Not in our country," the source, who has seen the conditions firsthand, said.”’ https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/14/politics/border-patrol-mcallen-texas-pictures/index.html #familiesbelongtogether #nodeportation #nodetention

“‘AN IMMIGRANT RIGHTS advocate on the U.S.-Mexico border was arrested and accused of “illegal alien smuggling” as she accompanied an asylum-seeker to a port of entry in southern Arizona. Ana Adlerstein, a volunteer at Casa del Migrantes, a migrant shelter in the Mexican town of Sonoyta, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials told her that “the Fourth Amendment doesn’t apply here” and “the border’s different,” as she was taken into custody Sunday.

Adlerstein was detained for more than four hours, and though she was not charged, she said CBP officials specifically told her that she was being placed under arrest, cited U.S. law prohibiting human smuggling, denied her access to an attorney, and informed her that investigators with the Department of Homeland Security would be following up with her as part of an “ongoing investigation.” The arrest marks the latest in a series of aggressive actions the Trump administration’s frontline immigration enforcement agencies have taken against individuals and organizations working with migrants, which has included the arrest of nine humanitarian aid providers in Arizona, and sweeping surveillance, interrogation, and travel restrictions leveled against activists, journalists, and immigration attorneys in the San Diego-Tijuana area.”’ https://theintercept.com/2019/05/09/asylum-border-humanitarian-aid/ #nomoredeaths #youcantdeportamovement #keepfamiliestogether #familiesbelongtogether and free #nodetention #nodeportation #letthemstay

This is going to get people killed. There is no other way to say it. "The Trump administration has sent new guidelines to asylum officers directing them to take a more skeptical and confrontational approach during interviews with migrants seeking refuge in the United States. It is the latest measure aimed at tightening the nation’s legal “loopholes” Homeland Security officials blame for a spike in border crossings.

According to internal documents and staff emails obtained Tuesday by The Washington Post, the asylum officers will more aggressively challenge applicants whose claims of persecution contain discrepancies, and they will need to provide detailed justifications before concluding an applicant has a well-founded fear of harm if deported to their home country.

The changes require officers to zero in on any gaps between what migrants say to U.S. border agents after they are taken into custody and testimony they provide during the interview process with a trained asylum officer.

The new guidelines and directive to asylum officers are among the most significant steps the administration has taken to limit access to the country for foreigners seeking asylum, whose right to apply for humanitarian protection is protected by U.S. law and rooted in post-World War II international treaties granting refuge to those fleeing persecution. The changes appear to signal the administration wants to turn away asylum seekers earlier in the legal process, aiming to cut down on the number of applicants who enter the court system and to deter others from attempting to cross into the United States to seek asylum." https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/us-asylum-screeners-to-take-more-confrontational-approach-as-trump-aims-to-turn-more-migrants-away-at-the-border/2019/05/07/3b15e076-70de-11e9-9eb4-0828f5389013_story.html?utm_term=.4bbe5012a9fe

“‘The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was quick to condemn the move, calling it the “latest scheme by ICE to enlist local police in its abusive deportation agenda.” “The agency explicitly aims to subvert the will of local communities that have passed ordinances to prevent exactly this kind of cooperation between police and ICE,” ACLU’s deputy political director Lorella Praeli said in a statement. “Participants would be forced to carry the financial burden of ICE’s aggression, potentially costing the state millions in operational expenses and legal fees.” “We urge local law enforcement to resist this dangerous proposal and stand by their commitment to the communities they serve.” This new program is the latest move by the Trump administration to tighten immigration rules.”’ Fixed that last line for you.
This new program is the latest move by the Trump administration to destroy the lives of immigrants and disregard municipalities choice to govern as they see fit.

“When migrants are sent to places like rural Louisiana, it becomes much harder for them to win asylum. One judge denied every asylum claim from 2014 to 2018.

Louisiana has far fewer immigration attorneys than states like California and Texas. ICE’s New Orleans office, which oversees all detainees in Louisiana, denies nearly every parole application, meaning detainees have to fight their cases and assemble the documents that back up their claims from jail.

When asylum seekers finally make it to court, Louisiana’s immigration judges deny almost all of their asylum claims. One judge, Agnelis Reese, denied every asylum claim she’d heard between 2014 and 2018. For an administration intent on quickly deporting asylum seekers with minimal due process, there is probably no better place to send people than Louisiana.

The new contracts in Louisiana show that ICE continues to disregard the limits Congress tried to impose on the number of immigrants it detains. The 2019 spending bill passed by Congress in February instructed ICE to reduce its detainee population from about 50,000 to 40,000 by September. Yet ICE has routinely exceeded congressional limits, and it’s taking things even further with the Louisiana contracts, which are expanding its capacity by another 2,500 detainees. The three Louisiana jails are run by LaSalle Corrections, a Louisiana-based private jail operator that started in the nursing home business before realizing it could apply the same model to running jails: Keep occupancy high and costs low.” https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/05/louisiana-decided-to-curb-mass-incarceration-then-ice-showed-up/

CBP conspired with armed right wing militia who kidnapped refugees at the border: "'On his March 8 online radio show, United Constitutional Patriots leader Horton invited the audience to follow the process with migrants whom a female militia member had just detained. “Call it in,” a woman’s voice is heard saying on the show. “OK,” Horton responds. “Hang on a minute, folks. Good morning dear friends!! With these photographs I would like to sensitize people about the detention of wild animals in zoos or natural parks. Like being humans, animals also have the right to live their lives in total freedom without suffering physical or psychological violence.
Thanks to everyone 🙏

At the event, Freddy described the risks he took to get to the U.S. border—“sleeping in the street, enduring storms, enduring darkness, enduring the sun, and enduring hunger,” he told local reporters in Spanish. In detention at Tornillo, Freddy describes an experience that echoes that of many other children released from that facilities: He felt despair and uncertainty, he recalled, but could not talk about it with his parents. “If I told them that I was devastated, that I could not stand it anymore, that I wanted to give up, they were going to feel very sad,” he said. “So I was left with all that load on my conscience.” https://www.citylab.com/equity/2019/04/el-paso-art-exhibit-migrant-kids-detention-tornillo-artwork/587254/

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #Repost @newsanctuarycoalition @get_reposter “President Trump said he’s ready to give “an unlimited supply” of immigrants held at the southern border to mostly Democratic sanctuary cities in an effort to make liberals who don’t like his policies “so happy."
The comments, unleashed across Twitter and during a brief media appearance at the White House Friday, completely contradicted statements from his own administration, which a day earlier denied that Trump was considering the plan as a way to punish his perceived political enemies.

Mayor de Blasio on Friday said he was unmoved by Trump’s efforts at retaliation.
“Trump has yet again proven that the only constant in his immigration policy is cruelty,” the mayor said. “He uses people like pawns. New York City will always be the ultimate city of immigrants — the president’s empty threats won’t change that.” But many advocates were aghast at Trump’s position that sending immigrants to a region would be a threat or a punishment.
“It’s a bizarre, outlandish notion and one that really doesn’t make any sense except that it’s consistent with this administration’s unserious approach to these very important questions of how you deal with people who come here,” said Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s immigrants’ rights project. “It’s impulsive, irrational and dehumanizing.” #nohumanisillegal #immigrantsarewelcomehere #youcantdeportamovement #nodetention #nodeportation #familiesbelongtogetherandfree

Right to Resist: Fighting the Criminalization of Migrant Activism

In the era of the Trump presidency, there is perhaps no issue more hotly contested than immigration. With many voicing discontents against America’s harsh migrant policies, immigrant rights defenders and activists have been increasingly targeted, prosecuted and convicted by federal authorities. This INCITEment Series program hosts a discussion panel between New York immigration activist Ravi Ragbir and leading immigration, race and sexuality Professor of Law Katherine Franke. The conversation will be moderated by Sara Gozalo, program coordinator at the New-York based migrant support organization, New Sanctuary Coalition. Panelists will discuss the evolving role of activism in response to the threat of government retaliation, and the ways in which legal professionals can help shield community leaders from unjust legal persecution. Volunteer tables at the event will allow guests to learn more about ways they can get involved.

This event is free and open to the public.

“Under “the plain language of the statute, they simply are not subject to the ... return provision” that applies to other categories of immigrants, Seeborg said. He said the Department of Homeland Security also failed to take steps to protect the asylum-seekers from harm they might suffer in Mexico. An international treaty bars the U.S. from sending asylum-seekers to a country in which their life or freedom would be threatened. “The legal question is not whether the (policy) is a wise, intelligent or humane policy,” but whether it complies with the law, Seeborg said. He said he would issue a nationwide injunction against the policy, but delayed its effective date until Thursday to allow the administration to appeal and seek a stay from a higher court.

The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment.

The ruling is the latest in a series of asylum cases to go against Trump, who said last week that he would like to “get rid of the whole asylum system.” A federal appeals court in December rejected the administration’s attempt to allow only immigrants who entered the U.S. at currently jammed ports of entry to apply for asylum. Also in December, a federal judge struck down former Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ attempt to bar victims of domestic violence or gang violence in their home countries from seeking asylum in the U.S. And in January, another federal judge ruled that asylum-seekers have a right to judicial review of deportation orders.” #nodeportation #nodetention #familiesbelongtogether and free!

The Interfaith Center of New York, The New Sanctuary Coalition, Union Theological Seminary, The Micah Faith Table, NYS Council of Churches and our faith partners statewide are calling on all communities of faith and moral conscience to join us on Tuesday, April 2nd, in Albany NY to support the introduction of the Separation of Children Accountability Response Act.

As countless separated families continue to await answers and reunification, the Separation of Children Accountability Response Act will be introduced in the State Assembly by Assembly member Harvey Epstein and in the Senate by Senator Brian Benjamin. This bill will require greater transparency from New York state foster care organizations that hold separated and unaccompanied children and receive Federal funding from the Office of Refugee Resettlement/HHS for this work.

The SCAR Act asks that basic information about separated and unaccompanied children in care of these agencies be reported to the state, as well as to the federal government. Given the current administration's secrecy and deceit on its family separation policy and its abuse of federal non-disclosure agreements with contractors in order to hide its inhumane policies, the SCAR Act seeks transparency through state accountability. Finally, the SCAR Act is envisioned as a replicable model for other states around the country that seek to be a check on the cruel and xenophobic immigration policies of the Trump administration.

Family separation has not ended.
Children are being kept in clandestine shelters around the country.
ARE YOU OUTRAGED?
New Yorkers, join us for our SCAR Lobby Day in Albany on 4/2.

The Interfaith Center of New York, The New Sanctuary Coalition, Union Theological Seminary, The Micah Faith Table, NYC Council of Churches, and our faith partners statewide are calling on all communities of faith and moral conscience to join us on Tuesday, April 2nd, to support the introduction of the Separation of Children Accountability Response Act.

For more information on the April 2nd press conference and action, or to arrange to join transportation between New York City and Albany, please watch this space. Event will be up shortly.

While our friend was waiting for his immigration hearing, his six year old son made this beautiful artwork using markers and paper a volunteer brought with her. The proud father beamed at his son and bragged "since he was born, there's been something truly special about this boy. He has always been different from his siblings. He organizes things at home without being asked. He used to cry asking to be taken to church and now he looks forward to attending every week. He says he wants to be a doctor when he is grown up, then says he wants to be a priest. My wife and I prayed and prayed before he was born, and every day I am convinced God has blessed us.” No child should have to spend the day in immigration court. We are grateful to our volunteers who show up in solidarity with children and families.

On Friday, in its much anticipated decision regarding the continued ability of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status relief to protect our most vulnerable immigrants in New York, the US District Court for the South District of New York reminded us that there is a place for the rule of law despite this administration's legally baseless and morally bankrupt attempts otherwise. This decision also brings with it vindication and a renewed commitment to continue accompanying our young friends as they work toward their dreams.

**BREAKING** Tonight we have great news!

Baba Sillah, a porter at a Fifth Avenue building for over a decade who is a native of Gambia, will be reunited with his family shortly. He is being released right now from immigration detention at Hudson County Correctional Facility in New Jersey after concerted efforts on his behalf by labor unions, elected officials, immigration advocates and community members.
Sillah’s release comes hours after a press conference by supporters in downtown Manhattan, and a day after municipal violations on his record were pardoned by Governor Cuomo.
Sillah is married to a US citizen, Mamou Driame, and is father to five young US citizen children. At the press conference, his youngest daughter, 5, said all she wanted was for ICE to let her dad come home.
Sillah has a pending application for permanent residency. Minutes before Sillah was set to board a plane to deport him back to Gambia, a temporary stay of deportation was granted, thanks to the efforts of NSC Community Legal Defense.

We are grateful for the pardon granted by Governor Cuomo and the elected officials pushing for Baba's release today. We are more than grateful for the community's persistence.

Join us tonight at 6:30pm at Judson Memorial Church to show solidarity with Baba and his family.

From NSC’s @gozalos “Even though we always suspected that DHS was monitoring our actions, seeing proof of it is quite disturbing. As far as we know, we still have a right to freedom of speech, and nobody should be spied on or punished for expressing their political opinion. There is no space for a secret police that spies on the people, in order to intimidate them, in a democracy.

Since we know how scared they are of our voices, we will continue to speak, scream, sing and organize. We hope you will join us in the months ahead as we continue to organize and expose this racist and unjust system. We will not be intimidated and we will not be silenced.” #youcantdeportamovement #familiesbelongtogether #abolishice #FreeSpeechVsICE #nodeportations #Nodetention
