I adore my human.

While it is February, one can taste the full joys of anticipation. Spring stands at the gate with her finger on the latch. (Patience Strong)

‘Seed Box: Trees of New York’ is a giant recreation of the earliest seed boxes used in the 1700s to preserve and transport seeds over long ocean voyages. One aim of this project is to encourage a sense of wonder and awe, and to inspire the protection of nature. Visitors can claim and transform the meaning of this sculpture through their interaction with it: they make their own associations and tell their own stories about the contents of the box. The work also conveys a sense of time: if left untouched the trees and their roots would overtake and dismantle the box.
.
It has been a joy to experience the natural beauty of the Park and to interact with Socrates staff, fellow artists, and Park visitors. I am thankful for the honor of participating in ‘The 2019 Socrates Annual’ fellowship & exhibition and grateful for the generous support from Socrates.

My gratitude to Jess Wilcox (@jesskawilcox) & John Hatfield (@socrateshatfield) for believing in the full potential of this project; Chris Zirbes (@cjzirbes) & Terrence McCutchen for advice, guidance, and an amazing install; and Eric, Helen, & Lou for the beautiful Park landscape and the care given to this project.
.
Thank you to a dream team: Ryunosuke Matsui, Joseph Burwell (@joseph__burwell), Issac Flores (@i55ac), Amra Causevic (@ammmmraaaa), & my dad. My thanks to Smack Mellon (@smackmellon) where I am a resident in the Studio Program. Thank you to Nari Ward (@nariward) who brought our Hunter MFA class on a field trip to Socrates and encouraged each of us to apply.

2019 Artist Fellow Rachelle Dang (@rachelledang.studio) is taking over the account today!
.
‘Seed Box: Trees of New York’ resembles, at a magnified scale, a specialized case used to preserve and transport seeds over long ocean voyages in the 1700s. The installation is comprised of four parts: a giant box with compartments, handles, and a keyhole; a matching lid with ventilation peep holes; living trees native to the northeastern region of the US; and oversized hand-made sculptures of seeds. This installation responds to a complex history of global trade throughout the Atlantic region and across the world during an era of imperial expansion.
.
1) Photo by @etienne_fro
.
2) To select trees for this project, I followed the New York Division of Land and Forests guide to native trees, and received generous advice from the Socrates staff (Eric, Lou, and Helen (@helenkarhan)). I sourced the trees from Long Island Natives (@long_island_natives), a nursery that specializes in growing native trees from seed.
.
3) The trees in my installation are commonly known as pagoda dogwood, bur oak, sweetgum, eastern redbud, and witch-hazel. They are deciduous and cold-hardy, and in winter they are dormant. The vulnerable roots are protected from cold temperatures with a double insulating wall of cedar mulch.
.
4) The seed sculptures include an enormous pinecone, three winged seeds the size of skateboards, and two giant chestnuts inside a prickly husk. The pinecone is modeled from the Eastern Hemlock, threatened by destructive insects due to climate change. The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was devastated by fungal blight in the early 1900s becoming functionally extinct in its native range. Photo by @etienne_fro
.
5) I did the epoxy sculpting at Smack Mellon (@smackmellon) where I have a studio residency, and I spray painted the sculptures at Socrates.
.
6) Amra Causevic (@ammmmraaaa) fabricated the amazing structural armatures for the seeds.
.
7-9) Thank you Ryunosuke Matsui, Joseph Burwell (@joseph__burwell) and Issac Flores (@i55ac) for the incredible carpentry work done with great expertise and care. Photo 7 by @i55ac

I love the way the sunlight catches the barricade at the end of the day. In the distance you can see the Williamsburg Bridge and the Domino Sugar factory.

It's a beautiful day in #NYC perfect to visit any #NYCPark - if you're #downtown stop by #BatteryPark to visit Pier A and the American Merchant Mariner's #Memorial - This #sculpture is based on a photograph taken in 1942 of a US oil tanker named Muskogee. The merchant ship had been torpedoed by #German forces. The sailors depicted here are the last portraits of these men.

I love winter landscapes. There are so many shadows and trees without leaves make great subjects. I noticed this ray of light cutting through the East River Park leading the way towards the buildings on the horizon. Behind me I can hear the loud empty sound of FDR Drive and it is freezing cold but I still find so much delight in this scene.
