“Ceremony” 2018. Ceramics, Wood and glass bottle

I wanted to create a set of rules for drinking alcohol based loosely on East Asian drinking ceremonies. The bottle is handed off to the oldest member. The box is opened by the youngest member. The panel is slide off. The lid of the box is flipped over and the panel is placed in the center. The lid in turn becomes a tray. The ceramic pieces are taken out one by one started from the largest bowl. They’re placed onto the tray. The youngest member places the large brown bowl onto the blue bowl. The oldest member pours the spirits into the brown bowl. There are small cracks on the brown bowl allowing the spirits to be filtered slowly into the blue bowl. After waiting 15 mins, remove the brown bowl and place it on the white bowl. It is a place holder for the spirits once the blue bowl is filled. The triangular cup is taken and dipped into the blue bowl by the oldest member. Either they accept the cup and drink it as a sign of respect or they pour it back into the brown bowl to signify disappointment. Once the eldest member has drank or returned the cup. The youngest member takes the cup and copies the choice the oldest member chose. Then after the process is complete, the rest of the alcohol is thrown in the air drenching both of the people. Then everything is wiped and returned to its original position. End of ceremony.

We are proud to have just launched our first ever fundraising campaign on #RisingViolets, NYU's official crowdfunding platform! The Grey is raising funds for "Art after Stonewall, 1969–1989" opening this April, one of our most ambitious exhibitions to date. We are inviting YOU to support the first-ever exhibition to extensively survey art of the #LGBTQ civil rights movement as we honor the 50th anniversary of the #Stonewall Uprisings—any amount helps us reach our goal!
🌈
The funds raised from our campaign will go towards:
1️⃣ The cost of hosting our free and public opening reception on April 23, which invites the @nyuniversity community and the public at large to see the exhibition's debut and enjoy a drink or two!
2️⃣ Putting on free public programs, which allow museum patrons to engage with artists, curators, writers, and scholars via lectures, tours, and film screenings.
3️⃣ Designing and installing exhibition graphics and signage, which allow us to uniquely display information to a large audience and develop the most successful wayfinding method to allow visitors to easily navigate throughout our exhibition space.
🌈
You can access the campaign at https://bit.ly/2GLczwj or the link in our bio. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates from our project owners, Yilin, Allegra, and Reshma!

#HappyValentinesDay folks! Here is a love-themed treat from the #NYUArtCollection and our current exhibition, illustrations of Ovid’s #Metamorphoses by #WallyReinhardt
💕
Pictured here, the story of Orpheus and Eurydice:
While strolling through a field on her wedding day, the nymph Eurydice dies from a poisonous snake bite. In his grief, her widow—the Thracian bard Orpheus—travels to the underworld and, using his lyre and his enchanting voice, implores Pluto and Persephone to return Eurydice's soul to the world of the living. Deeply moved, the gods decide that Eurydice may live again—as long as Orpheus in leading his wife out of the underworld, does not turn back to look at her... 💕

2. Make something which actually means to you

the story of a girl who is still struggling with printmaking or the process of creating art.
When I decided to discard my vision when creating the piece, I realized the paper kept shuffling together with the movement of my pen. And it opened my eyes that the canvas or the paper is always stable, and it is the pen or the brush which has the movement, therefore creating the piece.
Instead, as the instruction has said, I tried to think out of the box. Make the canvas move.
I created a simple tool, having the pen steady, but I, myself, moving the paper around and create the art.

I wanted to convey my experience as a female, wanting to play basketball in the gym. However, it was never easy to step into the court as a woman. There are females in the basketball court. But there were never when I was in the gym. I need a lot of courage in order to step in to that single door, where leads to the basketball, but I was always afraid.
The piece is an experience of mine, how I felt being scared because of who I am, which is labeled by others but rather not by how much I love to dribble the ball.
I am not a great basketball player, nor am I an athlete.
I’m just a girl who likes to do lay ups.
And it needs a lot of effort to walk into the door because of the judgments that the world creates, although it might not necessarily be the ones who are in the court.

Bill Traylor (ca. 1853–1949) was born into slavery in Alabama, he was an eyewitness to history: the Civil War, Emancipation, Reconstruction, Jim Crow segregation, the Great Migration, and the steady rise of African American urban culture in the South. Traylor made the radical steps of taking up pencil and paintbrush and attesting to his existence and point of view. The paintings and drawings he made are visually striking and politically assertive; they include simple yet powerful distillations of tales and memories as well as spare, vibrantly colored abstractions. @smithsonian

In honor of the opening day of "Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving" at the @brooklynmuseum here's a #fbf to the Grey's own #FridaKahlo exhibition back in 1983!
•
In the spring of 1983, the Grey Art Gallery exhibited the largest group of paintings by Frida Kahlo yet to be seen in New York City, paired with more than one hundred black and white photographs by #TinaModotti. The sixty Kahlo paintings in the exhibition ranged from a late '20s family portrait to a still-life painted in 1954, the year of her death.
•
Tina Modotti, who lived and worked as a photographer in Mexico during the same period as Kahlo, documented the lives and struggles of the Mexican people from the 1920s through the 1940s.

•
Pictured above, Kahlo’s painting “The Dream (The Bed)” (1940), and snapshots from the exhibition opening from the Grey’s archive.

Louise Bourgeois, Spider IV, 1996.
.
Louise Bourgeois created the first of her darkly compelling spider sculptures in the mid-1990s, when she was in her eighties. The artist saw spiders as both fierce and fragile, capable of being protectors as well as predators. For Bourgeois, the spider embodied an intricate and sometimes contradictory mix of psychological and biographical allusions.

Barkley L. Hendricks (1945 –2017) was a contemporary American painter who made pioneering contributions to black portraiture and conceptualism. While he worked in a variety of media and genres throughout his career (from photography to landscape painting), Hendricks' best known work took the form of life-sized painted oil portraits of Black Americans. . #nyuart #barkleyhendricks #blackhistorymonth #portrait #painting #americanart @jackshainman . . . #Accessibility [Photo description: image 1. painting of women with gold background. image 2. Hans Haacke, Blue Sail, 1964-1965, installation, chiffon, oscillating fan, fishing weights, and thread, 134 in. x 126 in. 💙🌬💙💙💙
.
His notes about the blue sail very clearly speak of his style. “If wind blows into a light piece of material, it flutters like a flag or it swells like a sail, depending on the way which it is suspended. The direction of the stream of air, as well as its intensity, determines the movements. None of these movements is without an influence from all the others. A common pulse goes through the membrane.”

“FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE” 2018 Cardboard

The figure stands 6’5 from the ground up, with the body language of someone that is threatening another. Ideally, it should be seen by a person walking from the side to the front of the figure. First by noticing it’s aggressive frame, be intimidated. As the viewer continues to walk and positions themselves in front of the figure. They start to notice that it’s paper thing and fragile. Held together by strips of cardboard and struggling to balance itself. This starts to destroy any illusion of it as threatening to weak and unstable. People who tend to show others they are strong through violence are often the ones that are weak and fragile.

“ADDICTION” 2018,
Lithograph oil on plexiglass, candy

I was experimenting on creating an artwork from a repeated set of actions using unorthodox materials. So I ended up using candy/candy wrappers dipped in lithograph oil to create marks that were similar to a circuit board I had. Technology and candy have often been addictions that I’ve seen throughout my life. But they seen as less harmless then what they can become. Some of the candy I used were twizzlers, nerds, tootsie rolls, swedish fish, and reese’s. Try to see if you can identify, in which area, I used what candy !

"AMD" 2018 , MDF board, and Acrylic Paint

I was experimenting with woodblock prints. I wanted to create a matrix that by itself could stand as a piece of art and a tool to make prints. Although it was a failed attempt ( it was uneven at some areas) it was a fun concept to play around with. I eventually just coated this matrix with gel medium to seal it.

Constantin Brancusi Sculpture is in view at The Museum of Modern Art thru Feb 18th.

Rather than modeling clay like his peers, Brancusi carved his work directly from wood or stone, or cast it in bronze. Simultaneously, he rejected realism, preferring that his sculptures evoke rather than resemble the subjects named in their titles.

Cindy Sherman presents sustained, eloquent, and provocative explorations of the construction of contemporary identity and the nature of representation, drawn from the unlimited supply of images from movies, TV, magazines, the Internet, and art history. Working as her own model for more than 30 years, Sherman has captured herself in a range of guises and personas which are at turns amusing and disturbing, distasteful and affecting.

#fbf Richard Serra, Tilted Arc, 1981, Steel, 12 feet high x 120 feet long
.
Tilted Arc was a controversial public art installation displayed in Foley Federal Plaza in Manhattan from 1981 to 1989. Advocates characterized it as an important work by a well-known artist that transformed the space and advanced the concept of sculpture, whereas critics focused on its perceived ugliness and saw it as ruining the site. Following an acrimonious public debate, the sculpture was removed in 1989 as the result of a Federal lawsuit, and has never been publicly displayed since.

In 2018, I graduated from my Master’s program and visited a grand total of 57 museums. Most were in New York and DC, but several others were in Italy and France this fall. Through the end of the year, I’ve put up “highlights” of museum adventures on my Instagram. 💫
💫
💫
I’d like to shout out to the #NYUArt Visual Arts Administration Alumni Council, who awarded me a grant to travel to Boston and Salem for thesis research last March, as well as the lovely people who granted me research interviews at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn; the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem; and the National Museum of the American Indian in New York. It is so, so exciting to see more accessible, interdisciplinary programming implemented across the United States, and to learn so much from the people leading the charge! 💫

Fischli and Weiss, Snowman (2016)
.
This is an updated version of a 1987 site-specific work by Fischli and Weiss that was commissioned by a German thermic power plant whose energy—in the form of heat, paradoxically—was used to keep the snowman perpetually frozen. Though a snowman is, as Fischli observes, a “sculpture that almost anyone can make” simply by rolling three spheres of snow and setting them atop one another, Fischli and Weiss’s Snowman is dependent on a technically complex apparatus for its year-round subsistence.
