“How do I make friends!”
After only ONE WEEK on the island, I called my sister + asked that exact question. I felt SUPER discouraged... it didn’t pan out like I had planned. I intended to make 20+ friends in the first few days, but in reality, I could count as many people I knew on the island on ONE hand.
In that moment, I began to see why people say adult friendships feel like an uphill battle. In college, the social scene is COMPLETELY built in. For me... I THRIVED!!! From sunrise to sunset, I TOTALLY immersed myself in constant interaction, whether it be class, work, greek life, church, or literally ANY extra curricular activity.
But when you come out of that culture + into the “real world,” it’s really easy to feel stuck. You have to really work at making friends + learn how to be intentional.
For anyone in the same season of life, here are some tips I’ve learned for making friends in the “real world”:
➡️ Join a club or a church or an organization + get REALLY involved... it gets you around people who share the same values, interests and beliefs. This is absolutely VITAL if you want to make friends that have things in common with you, plus it’s a fun way to stay busy + meet new people.
➡️ Reach out. It doesn’t matter if it’s someone at a coffee shop or someone at wine club... do it. How else are you going to connect with them!
➡️ Don’t get caught up in the numbers. It’s NOT the amount of friends you have, but really the depth of the friendship. INVESTING in the friendships you have now is SUPER important.
➡️ Embrace the loneliness + alone time... but don’t get stuck in it. Let yourself feel ALL the feels of the post-grad awkwardness, as weird as it sounds.
I’ve talked to other post-grad friends + I’ve come to realize a good majority of us are in the same boat... it kind of made me feel not so alone. And in writing this, I hope this is somehow comforting + helpful to those in the same season.
Does anyone else feel the same way! I know I’m not the ONLY one!!! 😝 📸 @mrslindseyroman
Amazing hike in Hawaii. Shot on Contax T2 with Kodak Portra 400 #35mm
I recently had the opportunity to speak at an event called “One Night With the King” put on by the @waikikibeachgathering. They spent an evening literally washing the feet of Waikiki’s homeless and serving them a meal. •
I was able to share my history of living on the street as a boy, addiction as a teenager, and how that is what created The Viking Poet. I spit a few pieces and even saw a few familiar faces from my time doing “Poetry on Demand” out on the streets.
So incredibly grateful for this opportunity and humbled to have been able to love on some people. Moral of the story, instead of your next mission trip to Africa or the Philippines...just walk down the street, look someone in the eyes, and share a meal or at the least a damn hug
