Since I last posted REGULARLY I have taken a lot of photos. So I hope you don’t mind if I do a few throwbacks! This is one of my favourites from my farm sojourn in May. You couldn’t set a photo up like this. A totally random set of circumstances that led me to be on the bridge at sundown with 3 dogs - can you spot the 3rd one One of my favourite spots on the farm. Where’s your favourite spot to take a deep breath & drop the shoulders after a big week Let me know in the comments 💕
When I was 22, after graduating from college, I got my first solo apartment. My anticipatory energy from the years of sharing spaces overflowed into that one-bedroom unit, such as in how I meticulously cleaned every square of surface, coaxing even the permanently browned linoleum kitchen tiles to glisten. I was determined to develop high standards and good routines to establish the foundation of my adulthood.
One of those routines was to cook dinner every night. I had learned to cook as an adolescent, yet this solo living arrangement provided the first opportunity through which I needed to cook primarily. I was determined to do so methodically, beginning by developing a scheme for organizing my ingredients. I thus identified the item that would then become and has since remained my unfailing organizational tool: mason jars.
It seemed like such a big deal, when I was 22, to own a whole new set of mason jars. I purchased one set from Meijer for $12.49, proudly carried it out of the store to my Jeep Liberty and then up the three flights of stairs to my apartment, and carefully unpacked and sanitized each jar before filling it with the assigned food goods. Noticing that one dozen jars wouldn’t be sufficient, I returned to Meijer for another pack, and another, and another, until I had accumulated a stock of jars to fill my cupboards and contain every ingredient on my comprehensive list. When I moved from that apartment to begin my adventure to DC in 2014, I had eight sets: 96 jars.
Now, a few moves later and many mason-jar sets deeper, my kitchen is anchored by mason jars, which fill many of the drawers and cupboards, containing everything that a home cook could need. And some of the other rooms feature accents of these unfailing organizational tools, too, providing a place for the messiest office items, displaying our supplies beautifully and accessibly.
Here, mason jars holding my office supplies rest on oak shelves made by my handy husband, suspended on beautiful brackets made by the talented @ mdtmobilier.
