Tonight we had slowed cooked pork with fennel and asparagus. This was paired with another new Italian wine discovery. We had a 2015 DOC Gioia del Colle Primitivo Riserva made by @fatalonewines and once again bought from @haywinesuk
In the glass this wine has a ruby red colour with a slight peach colour to the rim. It has very good legs reflecting its ABV of 15%.
On the nose are primary flavours of stewed plum, dried fruits, blackcurrent, pear, hyacinth, passion fruit, cola and almond. There is a hint of yoghurt as a secondary flavour, and new shoe leather gives a tertiary flavour.
In the mouth there is a good mouth feel with plenty of astringency but accompanied by a sultana and vanilla like sweetness. The tannins are on the soft side. There is minimal alcohol burn and there is a smoky leathery long lasting finish.
This wine more than stands up to the food complementing the fennel well. I’ve been after a good Pugliese wine for sometime and I think I’ve managed to find an exceptional wine on my first try. More bottles will be bought soon as I think this wine will age well. I’m just crossing my fingers that @haywinesuk has plenty in stock.

A wine without year officially. They produced this very special edition in 2012 in order to celebrate their 50-year anniversary and took the best grapes of Negroamaro and Primitivo from 50 year old vines that have been wildly and mixed grown over the last 5 decades. It's not sure, but they believe it's a more or less 50-50 mix. They're a true piece of wine history, because nowadays those mixed grape vineyards are very rare to find in general (Austrian Gemischter Satz DAC is one famous one for example).
Dark ruby red color.
In the nose strong aromas of mature red fruit, plum jam, blackberry and raisins. Little spicy notes as well, especially Vanilla from the French oak barrels (aged for 12 months!)
On the palate very strong and powerful with an almost "meaty" consistency. Ripe red fruit dominates with a nice amount of extract sweetness left from the very over-matured grapes from the fermentation. Plums and blackberry stays. Hints of cedar, vanilla and licorice round up the complexity of this wine with a real unique character!
Acidity and tannins hold back on this one as it's a very round and pleasant, still a powerful red from Puglia with a very long finish!
14.5% vol. of alcohol
It's the second wine I tried from them. Again very much excellent! I posted one of their wines before - Sessantanni Vintage 2015.
