The whole serial killer/rapist/druggy
Theme is continued throughout the album till about the last quarter of the project where the more “beautiful” type theme kicks in with songs like “deja-vu” (another of my favourite tracks). In this he goes in depth and seriousness about his drug addiction while still giving it some humour.
He only once revisits his family issues with “My Mom”, a song of how her potential drug use could have impacted or influenced his, but that is only track 3.
The skits in this album are the best I’ve heard on an Eminem album. After “deja-vu” we get some more songs about drugs but they seem more up-beat and funny.
This album was perhaps to reignite Shady, but Shady seems week and strange to me here, the ruthless killer/funny misogynist Slim ,the “old” Eminem displays in the Marshal Mathers LP/Slim Shady LP seemed gone altogether replaced by this weaker, rapy-er guy that we learn to accept anyway.
For me the Real Slim Shady dies with encore or is reintroduced in MMLP2. We are shown some more club banger type songs towards the end like “Crack a Bottle” with Dre and 50, yet another thing we missed throughout was features.
After all this works out fine.
The deluxe edition adds “My Darling” and “Be Careful What You Wish For”, both decent songs that most Stans enjoy.
The production of this record has always stood out. It was the last project that the Bass Brothers helped with alongside Dre and at times the man behind “Cleaning Out My Closet” and “Lose Yourself”, Luis Resto.
A few remnants of the unresolved “King Mathers” and “Relapse 2” are united and combined to be included in the double disc version, “Refill”. These include “Forever” with Drake, Lil Wayne and Kanye West. Eminem spits his jealousy provoking verse here which forced Kanye to rewrite his.
We get some more songs on refill but nothing stands out which gives us the sense of relief that relapse 2, however much we wanted it, didn’t drop. It would have been worse and too similar.
For me this album was more of a tool not a discography completer. A tool album as I call them is like kamikaze, something to address a situation and to rehabilitate to the game.
