See "Sean Scully: 1970," before it closes May 28 at the laingartgallery and hatton_newcastle in Newcastle upon Tyne. This exhibition features paintings and drawings from 1967 to 1973. During this time, Scully studied at Newcastle University where his technically flawless paintings consisted of complicated grid systems of intersecting bands and lines, which formed a rich optical field. The illusion of depth and space was activated further by color contrasts as seen in the painting above. The exhibition will travel to the walkerartgallery in Liverpool from July 14 to October 14, 2018.

ONCE UPON A TIME 💙
Sean Scully’s work it’s an expression that wants to get in contact with the viewer, a kind of need of childhood communication.
Fluid blocks of individual colour, the boundaries between which are often blurred. horizontal and vertical brushstrokes, which convey a lavish sense of movement within the canvas.
Scully’s work can sometimes look simple but through his nuanced combinations of layering colour, it dictates the ambience of whatever’s around it.
“I want my paintings to be obvious, so that when you see them you feel that I have painted something you were thinking yourself, as if I have stolen the thought from you.” says Sean Scully
“There’s a huge sense of tragedy in me. Unlike Rothko, who I have been compared to, I’m not passive. He was a sedentary person. If you are inhabited by sorrow in some way, which he was, I think then you have to do something about it, and I’ve done something about it by making my work more aggressive.’ —

Sean Scully will be in conversation with Miranda Lash, Curator of Contemporary Art, at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville on Sunday, January 20 from 2 – 3 pm.
His exhibition, "Sean Scully: Landline" which is currently at the shuttered Hirshhorn Museum will travel to the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, February 23 – May 19. Scully has said of this body of work, “I think of land, sea, sky. And they always make a massive connection. I try to paint this, this sense of the elemental coming together of land and sea, sky and land…stacked in horizon lines endlessly beginning and ending…” Photo: Liliane Tomasko
