____________
This past week has been space focused for us.
First BBC One did “Holst: The Planets with Professor Brian Cox”
Classical music with the science added. A wonderful way to open up the general audience to classical music. Small absolutely loved it.
Then BBC 2 did the series “The Planets” going into further detail.
They are beautiful and fascinating programmes available on iPlayer , I would seriously recommend them.
_____________
Small has always been in love with Space so it was only right to treat him to some new spacey themed pieces.
This Plan Toys rocket was perfect! Made with their wonderful plan wood, the pieces stack up with shapes to slot in between. Cute little rocket celebration figure from Grimms and a solar system alphabet puzzle (not pictured).
______________
He is now well on the way to learning the planets of our solar system - PLUTO INCLUDED ! 😆
It’s amazing how when you let children follow their passions and interest areas, they are sponges for knowledge!

🌓 Moon 🌗. This is from last Monday 10th June, only just got around to playing with it. Still trying out different programs for editing and still not sure if I’m getting anywhere. This is 81 Lights processed in PIPP (converted to an AVI movie file) then stacked again in AutoStakkert! The reason I PIPP’d it first is because stacking 90% (even 80%) of the 81 Lights, my laptop kept running out of memory when it came to “Saving” it. The original photos were taken with a Canon 700D atop my Saxon 150DS. The images were “80 sec exposure at ISO 100.

The man who was stuck in space
Soviet cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev was in space when the Soviet Union fell apart in 1991. Unable to return home, he ended up having to stay in space until further notice. The cosmonaut eventually returned back to earth on March 25, 1992, after 10 months in orbit-to a nation that was very different to what it was when he had left. The Soviet Union had fractured into 15 nations, presidents had changed, and even his hometown of Leningrad had become St. Petersburg.
Interestingly, at the time, Krikalev was supposed to serve in the military reserves, and was almost issued a warrant for desertion — before the army realised that their reserve soldier was not even on the planet. 📷 Volkov (TASS) .

Warp drives, commonly used in science fiction, are propulsion systems which allow spacecraft to travel faster than light.

The most notable usage of a warp drive is in the iconic science fiction show “Star Trek”. In the Star Trek universe, they’re used as a plot tool which allows the characters to explore galaxy.

Dual stars (Двойные звезды)
The term "dual” system is used to designate a star of stars rotating around the common centre of Amis. Such duets may consist of both the solar counterparts and the more exotic facilities, such as neutron stars or even black holes.
.
Термин «двойная» система используется для обозначения пар звезд, вращающихся вокруг общего центра масс. Такие дуэты могут состоять как из аналогов Солнца, так и из более экзотических объектов, таких как нейтронные звезды или даже черные дыры

Moon
_
The distance between the Earth and the Moon is about 240,000 miles; this is about 30 Earth diameters. Our Moon is so big that it actually stabilizes the rotation of the Earth. NASA Solar System Earth, Moon, Mars and beyond will enable a lunar outpost by the United States space Administration NASA is a vision of a permanent or semi-permanent presence of humans on the Moon. June’s full moon: The Almanac first published the Native American names for full moons in the 1930s. the orbit of the moon around the Earth is almost in the same plane as the orbit of the Earth around the sun.
When the sun appears highest in the sky near the summer solstice (coming up on June 21), the full moon opposite the sun generally appears lowest in the sky.
For those living at higher latitudes the full moon nearest the summer solstice shines through more atmosphere than at other times of the year. This can give it a reddish or rose color. The moon will hit its fullest point at 3:31 a.m. on Monday (June 17). It will appear nearly full from June 15 Saturday night through June 19 Tuesday morning. In addition to the full moon, the brightest planet in the evening sky will be Jupiter. It will appear in the southeast sky at about 18 degrees above the horizon. Jupiter was at its brightest and closest to the Earth last week. Mercury and Mars will also appear about a degree apart in the west-northwest at about 5 degrees above the horizon, with Mercury (appearing on the right) being brighter than Mars. Pleiades Star Cluster! 🤓⠀
-⠀
The Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters and Messier 45, are an open star cluster containing middle-aged, hot B-type stars located in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters to Earth and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky. The cluster is dominated by hot blue and luminous stars that have formed within the last 100 million years. Reflection nebulae around the brightest stars were once thought to be left over material from the formation of the cluster, but are now considered likely to be an unrelated dust cloud in the interstellar medium through which the stars are currently passing.

After six days on Mars a storm forces the members of a NASA space mission to leave the surface of the planet and abort the mission, but during the storm one of the crew members (Mark Watney) is injured and is given for dead by his companions. However Mark Watney manages to survive the incident and ends up stranded alone on Mars without being able to communicate with his companions (who are already on their way to planet Earth) or any other person.

The book starts quite well, being written (at least the part of Mark Watney) in the first person and in the form of a blog in which Watney explains in detail to the reader the techniques he uses to survive and the science behind them.

I think Mark Watney is a character that I would like very much. Although I've only read the first chapter, Mark Watney already shows his witty, intelligent, optimistic and funny personality that probably makes reading the book much more fun and less dramatic.

What do you think?

Messier 102 (M102), also known as the Spindle Galaxy, is an edge-on lenticular galaxy located in the northern constellation Draco.

The Spindle Galaxy lies at a distance of 50 million light years from Earth and has an apparent magnitude of 10.7. It has the designation NGC 5866 in the New General Catalogue.

The galaxy occupies an area of 4.7 by 1.9 arc minutes of apparent sky, corresponding to a linear extension of about 60,000 light years. It is very difficult to see with binoculars, but easily visible in small telescopes, which show a thin, nebulous patch under good conditions.

Compared to other supermassive black hole scattered throughout the universe, the one at the core of our galaxy is mysteriously dorment. And now NASA thinks it knows why. A Powerful magnetic field at the centre of the Milky way is oriented just right to keep our galaxy's black hole, Sagittarius A*, from spewing high-energy radiation out into the cosmos or churning out the raw materials for new stars, according to NASA. Other black holes magnetic field funnel nearby gas straight into them, fueling the black holes and turning them into volatile cosmic furnaces. NASA scientists used High resolution Airborne wideband camera plus, this instrument gave NASA a look at 100,000 years worth of the magnetic field's activity. The spiral shape of the magnetic field channels the gas into an orbit around the black hole.

When NASAJuno spacecraft flew by 9,000 km (5,600 miles) above the most famous storm in the Solar System, Jupiter's Great Red Spot.
🌏🛰🌘📡
Enjoy it now, cause it may disappear in the next 20 years, according to Glenn Orton, a lead Juno Mission team member at "The storm's vortex has maintained strength because of Jupiter's 300-400 mph (483-640 km/h) jetstreams, but like any storm, it won't go on forever. In truth, the GRS has been shrinking for a long time,"
In the late 1800s, the storm was perhaps as wide as 35,000 miles four times the diameter of Earth. When the nuclear-powered spacecraft Voyager 2 flew by Jupiter in 1979, however, the storm had shrunk to a bit more twice the width of our own planet.
As of April 3, 2017, the GRS spanned the width of 10,159 miles (16,350 kilometers), less than 1.3 times Earth's diameter. Jupiter can sustain longer storms because the gas planet has tens of thousands of miles of atmosphere, and spins much faster than Earth.
