KELLY IN THE HAMPTONS - August 11 - October 8, 2018, Guild Hall, East Hampton, NY, Free Admission “Ellsworth Kelly’s sabbaticals in the Hamptons during 1960 and 1961 and a few years later, during 1968 and 1969, were pivotal episodes in his career, which spanned more than six decades. While ensconced on the East End during his late thirties and mid-forties, Kelly, one of America’s most significant abstractionists, painted two distinct bodies of work, made a large sculpture, drew plants and flowers, and photographed local farmyard barns. Surprisingly, the time he spent on the easternmost stretch of Long Island has not been investigated. As it is, it’s barely mentioned in most chronologies devoted to his life and art. ———EVENT SPONSORS

“Modern man thinks he loses something—time—when he does not do things quickly; yet he does not know what to do with the time he gains—except kill it.”

Here in London the mornings have been slow. Thanks to the time difference, NYC is still asleep when I wake. I’ve been using that time to read, write, reflect, and think—to sink into the quietness and solitude and be open to what comes from it.

Yesterday’s yard sale find, Springs, New York, $3.00 purchase price. “creatively” altered fiber glass table by Marc Berthier for Prisunic. Of course I did not know the maker when I purchased it (google searched when got it home) although another shopper thought it might be an original by another name designer. Now how to repair? Revamp? Refurbish? Anyone with ideas about how best to remove paint from fiberglass without removing the enamel finish? swipe to see the black table offered on 1st dibs for over $1000. haha … #yardsale #marcberthier #fiberglass #vintage #prisunic #70s #refreshing #refinishing #frenchdesigner #springsny #springs #eastend #buywhatyoulike

Back to the Hamptons: The historic 1712 windmill at the Stony Brook Southampton Campus was once the residence of Tennessee Williams. Williams lived in the windmill (sometimes known as the Mill Hill Windmill, The Claflin Windmill and the College Windmill), in 1957 while writing his play "The Day On Which A Man Dies" about the death of his friend Jackson Pollock (a resident of nearby Springs, NY).
The windmill was originally located on Hill Street in Southampton and was moved to its current location, in Shinnecock Hills, in 1890, when the property was the Claflin Estate. After World War II it became the Tucker Mill Inn, and was rented out to people, including Williams. While it was the Claflin estate, it served as the childhood playhouse of Beatrice Claflin, who supposedly fell down the steps of the windmill and died inside it. A prominent ghost story is that she haunts the windmill to this day.
Southampton College opened on the estate in 1963, and the windmill was used as a student meeting place and dorm for prominent guests. The school became part of Long Island University and in 2007, Stony Brook University took it over.
Also, ignore that I took that photo with a no parking sign in the way. I think I was running from security at the time. #Southampton #SouthamptonNY #ShinnecockHills #Shinnecock #NewYork #LongIsland #Suffolk #SuffolkNY #SuffolkCounty #history #windmill #tennesseewilliams #jacksonpollock #college #university #LIU #StonyBrookUniversity #SBU #LongIslandUniversity #SouthamptonCollege #SpringsNY #Hamptons #thehamptons #estate #historichotel
