I have been addicted to watching ‘The Staircase’!! I’m so nearly finished it but nobody I know is watching it for me to discuss 😭😭. *contains spoilers*
I honestly can’t decide one way or the other if it was an accident or a murder! I’m so back and forth about it!
The things that make me feel it wasn’t an accident are the following:
* I don’t know how Kathleen got the lacerations after the fall without a skull fracture *the whole Germany thing - I know coincidences can happen, but I think this is a bit much! * Micheals attitude when the documentary showed him at home during the trial. He seemed so relaxed and nearly arrogant. It didn’t seem like the behaviour of someone who was on trial for murder and was wrongly accused.
In terms of the prosecution- I feel as though the documentary was extremely bias to the defence and so they made a really good job of making the prosecution look incompetent. Would have been good to hear a bit more from them.
Also - I don’t believe for one minute that Kathleen was ok with Micheal seeing an escort. Although this absolutely does not make him a murderer.
I am now watching the lead up to the retrial. As a man in his 70’s I feel a bit sorry for him. The man that we saw in 2003 trial is a different man to the 2016 man we see. If he was a little more like the 2016 man in the original 2003 trial I’d be more inclined to say he was innocent. Despite me feeling a bit sorry for him in 2016, I still don’t know what side of the fence I’m on.
The whole discrediting of agent Deaver is interesting and Micheal definitely deserved a retrial in light of this. With that being said were Agent Deavers experiments not mocked at the original trial anyway
My favourite person in the whole thing is David Rudolph. I think he is brilliant and I felt sad that he felt unable to take on the retrial.

Whether friend or foe, the contemporaries of the Duchess of Lauderdale were of one mind: she was a force to be reckoned with. If her ruthlessness and ambition pushed the boundaries of her sex and era, so they threatened to overspill the grave itself. Three centuries after her death, there are many who maintain she has yet to vacate her house at Ham. Dressed all in black, her shadowy figure is rumoured to flit up and down the grand staircase. The scent of roses has been detected in the depths of winter; a looking glass in her private apartment is said to inspire a peculiar feeling of dread. And, according to the National Trust, there are even volunteers who are so conscious of a lingering presence that they greet it with a ‘Good afternoon, Your Grace’ - just to be on the safe side...👻
