Typical day as a Surgical First Assistant || this can vary and change a lot but this is the general idea of my Monday- Friday!
4am - WAKE UP
4:30am - workout (20-30minutes)
5:10am - shower, get ready, breakfast
6am - leave for the hospital (must change into hospital laundered scrubs)
6:50am - first morning scrub + clock in and check assignments
7am-3pm - Surgery (occasionally getting out later or early if a case gets canceled or finished early)
This includes patient positioning and prep, scrubbing in to help with visualization, retraction, and anything else the lead surgeon needs and wound closures.
3:15pm - Clock out, send report, change again
4pm-5/6pm - get home and play/read with Hudson, usually while making dinner, check in with my ladies in our health & fitness community, (workout if I didn’t in the AM - the next 2 weeks I’ll be traveling farther so my schedule will change).
7:30-8pm - cuddle & read with Hudson + put him to bed
8-10pm - work on my coach biz, finish any household chores, review notes or write any summaries I need for clinicals. Head to bed when everything is done 😴 .
I love being in different departments for #clinicals right now but I’m excited to pick a specialty and call it my home! AND this schedule will change again when I have to begin studying for my exams 😆

Today is our last day of clinical practice to be signed off and on our way. After Christmas we have 7 weeks at home/uni writing an essay and completing our workbooks that we’re assigned for enhanced scrub for our portfolio, then I think 6 weeks of an elective placement and then we’re done. We’re qualified ODPs.
I honestly can’t believe how quickly 3 years have gone. I don’t feel I know enough to qualify and be let loose! I think I’ll be starting in general surgery as a scrub practitioner, so I’m planning on using some of my elective to try and get ready for qualifying.
These bags are some little bits of something to say thank you to a few certain individuals that have been key in getting me to this point. They’re not extravagant, just tokens of things that they all enjoy.
I couldn’t have got to this point without them.

I post a lot about all the blessings and the good thats come into my life but what most don’t see is all the work that goes in to it. It is only through great sacrifice and dedication that one can be so greatly rewarded. In the last four days I’ve gotten a grand total of ten hours of sleep. Between work and mommy life it takes a lot to pull it off. I didn’t choose the easy route but I chose the one that matters to me. Surgery isn’t for the faint of heart and I don’t just mean because of the blood and gore. Career advancement doesn’t just come from sitting on your haunches waiting for it to be your turn; it comes from going after it with everything you’ve got. I’ve come far but the journey is still a long road out. I’m tired, my body aches, I’m hungry, I need a shower as well as a nap and I already have two more cases tomorrow (by ”tomorrow” I mean today lol) BUT!! I wouldn’t change a single bit of it!! I am a surgical first assist training to do what other can not. Save people who can’t save themselves!! And for that I’d happily go another 36 hours with only one meal and no sleep!! #lovemyjob #teamnosleep #sohungry #swollenfeet #surgicallife #surgicalfirstassistant #surgicalassistant #training #orientation #workhard #makeyourdreamscometrue #dedication

This post is late. I’d planned to post it last week, but was so busy. I got a few hours under my belt for assisting. I worked with a lovely general surgeon on Thursday for a big bowel case where diverticular disease had created some issues for the patient.
I love working in general surgery, before I started my training I worked in Endoscopy I found it fascinating being able to see the inside of the bowel, or the upper gi tract, so whenever it’s a general case it’s interesting to see the other side of it.
Diverticular disease is a condition of the bowel that generally only effects people from the west. Due to wear and tear the bowel weakens in areas and small pouches are created along the mucosa. It generally effects the large bowel, but it can effect any area of the GI tract.

My goodness...what a day! Today, was my first experience of being a #surgicalfirstassistant. They have such a tough job. From Pre op visiting to the wards to see their patients first thing, check the consent and paperwork to retracting or camera holding for long periods of time without really being able to move. I am exhausted and I only experience maybe 5% of what they do. The concentration I have had to have is different to what I scrub. Most of my #scrub competencies have been signed off in #gynae #theatres, so the procedures I thought I was familiar with...but it has been 8 months since I have done any so maybe some of it has faded.
I’ve always paid attention and felt I was quite competent in gynae, but obviously it’s a different concentration and aspect of the operation.
I’ve been given research to do, so time management is required between the work my mentors want me to do, a PowerPoint presentation, an essay and the worksheets/booklet for the portfolio at the end. ❤️
