As I have become an elementary teacher this year, I also turned into a difficult mom. 🤦🏼♀️🤷♀️
“Your A is flying in the air. Do it again! It needs to be in a straight line! Let’s do Raz-Kids.”
⠀⠀ “It’s so boring, mom” - my daughter drags her pencil across the page, trying to make her a’s straight.🥴😖
“Ok, that not that bad. You want to try it again!”
When the homework time is over for me and for Milania, I feel relief. It’s terrible to realize homework is sometimes a pain for me and for her.🤢
While I’m going through her school folder full of announcements and flyers, Milania grabs a bunch of paper, markers and drifts into her kingdom of drawing. On the paper, there appear her favorite characters: zombie, Dracula, supergirl. Next to the drawings she adds the sight words: a, the, like, I and her favorite “boo” “ho-ho-ho”.👧🏼✍️
“Why in the world did she make it so hard during the homework time! And now everything she knows flows on the paper so easily and effortlessly!”🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Do my kids that I teach also torture their parents with the predictable “It’s so hard... I can’t do it ...”when they do their homework How can I make it different Is there a purpose in it
“I’m going to read now,” - Milania stares at the pile of books around her.
⠀⠀ “You want me to read for you !”
⠀⠀ “No, I can do it myself!”
I wish I had a confidence of a 5-year old equipped only with sight words and a determination to read 10 books of her choice.
As Milania “reads” her collection, I realize that for her learning was not part of the homework time. It actually happened later when she turned to her drawings and “reading” time. I also thought that many important things in life happen outside of the “planned” time, when we are least prepared and have the lowest expectations for it :)

The ending to this story is always polarizing! We had a close vote today on whether or not this particular version has a good ending or not. They were very passionate about their opinions and it was a great way to start the conversation about how it's ok to think differently from other people.
