What is mindfulness Mindfulness is intentionally living with awareness in the present moment. It is living with that awareness without judgements or rejecting the moment. It is also living without attachment to the moment, meaning you are attending to the experience of each new moment, rather than ignoring the present by clinging to the past or grabbing for the future.
In group, we ring the mindfulness bell 3 times to give ourselves 3 chances to bring ourselves into the present moment. We then lead mindfulness with a different activity each week. It could range from something individualized like coloring a picture to a group activity like Jenga.
The purpose of ranging these activities is to show that this practice can be done anywhere, anytime, and with any activity. Did you notice any emotions rising Can you name them Were you able to stay focused during the practice or did your mind wander If it did wander, where did it go—past or future And were you able to bring your attention back
Some days, it’s going to be hard. It’s kind of like going to the gym, every mindfulness practice is a rep. some days, you’re able to do it, and some days, there’s so much on your mind that you can’t focus. the main thing is to NOT judge yourself for it. notice it, and let it go.
Sometimes people confuse meditation and mindfulness as the same thing. Meditation is a form of mindfulness practice. Contemplative prayer (rosary, Jewish Shema, Islamic Sufi practice, etc.) and movement (yoga, hiking, karate, etc.) are also popular forms of mindfulness practice. However, it can really be any activity really. Listening to music, eating an apple, being on the subway, etc. Are you able to notice your emotions rising And are you able to be focused and be in the moment If not, it is okay!! We are not perfect, and we are not robots. Give yourself some credit. If you were able to be present for 5 seconds, that’s 5 seconds of successful mindfulness.
