The Coral Reef
What does it do, and why should we be worried about bleaching and damage to this beautiful part of our ecosystem
Biodiversity: Coral reefs are essential spawning, nursery, breeding, and feeding grounds for numerous organisms. In terms of biodiversity, the variety of species living on a coral reef is greater than in any other shallow-water marine ecosystems and is one of the most diverse on the planet, yet coral reefs cover less than one tenth of one percent of the ocean floor. Coral reefs support more than 800 hard coral species and more than 4,000 species of fish.
Medicine: Many species found in coral ecosystems produce chemical compounds for defense or attack, particularly the slow-moving or stationary species like nudibranchs and sponges. Searching for potential new pharmaceuticals, termed bioprospecting, has been common in terrestrial environments for decades. However, bioprospecting is relatively new in the marine environment and is nowhere close to realizing its full potential. Creatures found in coral ecosystems are important sources of new medicines being developed to induce and ease labor; treat cancer, arthritis, asthma, ulcers, human bacterial infections, heart disease, viruses, and other diseases; as well as sources of nutritional supplements, enzymes, and cosmetics. The medicines and other potentially useful compounds identified to date have led to coral ecosystems being referred to as the medicine cabinets of the 21st century by some, and the list of approved and potential new drugs is ever growing.
There is so much we can do to keep our oceans clean, safe, and beautifully blooming, starting with something as simple as choosing a SAFE spf. Always do your part, our oceans literally depend on it!
My personal favorite SPF products have been from @sunbum
Recycle, reuse, reduce waste, read ingredient lists in your spf, and always volunteer!

A little over 2 years ago when I first moved to Costa Rica I heard of this race called @thecoastalchallenge local trail runners told me it was an incredible race that attracted international runners from around the world. I was intrigued, but at the time my goal was focused on tackling my first 100km at Volcan Arenal. I had no idea if my body could handle something like a 236km race where learning to recover would be just as important as the physical training. The following year, a friend of mine had completed the adventure distance of the race and he told me I needed to do the expedition run. He showed me pictures, retold stories, and then proceeded to persuade me all of the reasons why I should sign up the following year. I took the leap. I contacted @ser_costarica and he helped me begin the sign up process. I found my coach @pablitoultra and told him of my plan (which wasn't much of a plan) to run TCC. I had no idea what my first stage race would be like and even less of an idea for how to prepare for it. Basically, I just did whatever my coach said and was consistent with my training, recovery, and nutrition. I'm an obsessively focused person when I want to be and I thank God that when my family @bakersbakerycafe
@umm_itz_bailey @hey_itz_brooke @peacelovebree @loballin11 came to visit me they were accepting of my somewhat extreme lifestyle the months leading up to the race. The week of TCC is something that I still can't really describe. Im so grateful for the amazing people I met and the amount of support I received from complete strangers who became friends. I also am forever grateful for the support back at home. To the friends who surprised me at the start/finish line @elemendi @ronald_zumbado__coach @pablitoultra @hannahjonessanchez and to the friends who mentally pumped me up before and after the race @aman_dala @artromusik @smcampbell4
Lastly, thanks to my team @kilima.trailrunning, my international community @dirtbagrunners, and @sunbum @hang_10_distribution for the support.
