#fallforcostume by @redthreaded day 25 is warm. It gets a bit toasty at the Southern California Renaissance Faire, this was my solution. The last costume I made when I was attending faire was this one. 100% linen in that perfect shade of red. I came home from school and started it at 6:30 in the evening, worked on it for about 4 hours, then another few hours the next day, which also involved cartridge pleating the skirt and I was good to go, it’s still one of my favorite costumes. #fallforcostume2019 #fallforcostumeday25 #warm #red #linen #costume #rpfs #venetiancostume
We had no expectations though were quite curious. And it was amazing: had no idea that people spent months, sometimes a year making their Venetian costumes in the preparation for the carnival. So many details & attention. And some of those shoes! No, we didn't go to Venice, just Coppet, a 10 min train ride from Geneva. TIP: next edition of Venetian Follies is in 2 years; activities for children & some concerts as well as some food on site. -

Pair of chopines, Venice, 1600 - 1620
These 'platform-soled' shoes are well documented as a #Venetian fashion that spread to the rest of #Italy and Europe by the early seventeenth century. Some chopines were worn as overshoes outdoors, while others, like this pair were intended for #indoor use, worn with stockings alone. The chopines are 'straight' in shape, having no difference between the left and right shoes.
An elegant example of the most fashionable style of women's footwear, this pair of chopines is made of wood covered with silk velvet and trimmed with silk ribbon and silver-gilt bobbin lace, and a woven silver-gilt lace.
Numerous early 17th century Italian paintings depict women with very long skirts, often a sign that they are wearing chopines, although they cannot be seen. This meant that their gowns and petticoats needed additional fabric to give the extra length required. The chopines not only reflected the wearer's high status in society by increasing her height, they also demonstrated her wealth.
