Nothing screams attention to detail more then a killer hang tag ... A huge thanks to my friends @mancave_antiqueary for hooking me up big time with a monster stash of vintage hardware store hang tags ... Thanks for taking a look and hope you have a great weekend
This story starts with the automat... basically a vending machine restaurant. the very first being the Quisisana automat, which opened in 1895 in Berlin, Germany. A diner would insert a coin, lift a window, and take out whatever food they had chosen. . .
John Horn and Frank Hardart began their business in 1888 when they opened their first restaurant in the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1902. A few years later expanded their automats to New York City and eventually owned 36 automats in the city. During the Great Depression their automats in New York City served approximately 800, 000 people a day. One of their slogans during those days was "Dining on a Dime". With their coffee being one of the automats highlights it was a natural extension for Horn and Hardart to start roasting and nationally distributing their famous coffee. Horn & Hardart as a company is still in business today although the decline of the automat came with the rise in fast food restaurants. . .
This tin comes from the 1940-50s, and has a beautiful depiction of a cast iron coffee grinder (2nd pic) on the sides. The last pic is a Horn and Hardart postcard to explain how automats worked. . .

Part of the environmental graphic design for @bostonathleticclub was combining photorealistic athletes with various patterns. The end composition fits right in with the dynamic fitness space where they are featured.
Their excitement is contagious! HALLOWE'EN⠀
