⛄️Plastic-free Holiday Tip⛄️ Use cuttings from your tree or dried branches & fallen leaves from outside. Tuck away some year-round items to simplify any surface & add reusable pinecones in their place--simple, yet festive & cozy.
I was reading HGTV magazine today with my morning coffee … they had a page on $60-100 plastic wreaths. Very pretty, but that’s crazy talk!
🌲We bought some scented pine cones 4 years ago from Whole Foods (only $10/ bag) & are still reusing them. Wrapped in a paper bag inside a storage bin they keep the good smells & cost nothing year after year.
👉🏻Then, I put away some of our everyday tchotchkes & keep just the things that could be dressed up or feel winter-y on their own, like this old lamp, candelabras & fancy dinnerware, while bringing out our other holiday decorations (simple, but enough to dress up even a very NOT holiday-colored gorgeous pink wall in one’s study 😉)
IDK why it feels holiday-ish to me, but this lamp (ca. 1906) was my great grandfather’s, used when he worked on the railroads in St. Paul. It’s a standard flat (cotton) wick lamp that draws cold air from below, while hot air exits above. The bottom of the wick is submerged in kerosene stored in the base.
👉🏻Kerosene lamps were invented around 1850 after kerosene was discovered a few years prior. First the fuel was made by distilling coal (expensive) but then extracted more affordably from petroleum — some say triggering the early worldwide race for oil. Kerosene eventually replaced fat, camphene, or whale oil sources, until it was also surpassed by electricity for most American homes in the 1920s.
