Day 14 of #isolationsongs J Dilla and ‘Donuts’ from 2006. Probably one of the most influences albums of the past 20 years this was J Dilla’s final release just before his death aged just 32. The majority of the album was recorded in the hospital while he was receiving treatment. This knowledge hangs over the album but never makes its way towards the content. Instead what is present are 31 short tracks jammed full of ideas. Apparently promoted by Stones Throw as like scanning radio stations in an unfamiliar city ‘Donuts’ is never dull and never a drag. The album flies by. Starting with the Outro and ending with the intro I’m often tempted to just play it over again. An endless loop of creativity. Recommended for a sunny day in the garden. #isolationvinyl #isolationrecords #jdilla #jaydee #stonesthrow #dilla #donuts #vinyl #belfast
Still very much on my mind this past week, Psychic Ills, and the tragic loss of their main man Tres Warren. I’ve been playing the entire catalogue and it’s a damn near flawless body of work. Tres and his band really were putting out unique and original music. Dreamy space-blues is so often exactly what we need, and Tres Warren and Psychic Ills delivered exactly that. I am just a fan of the music, but Tres’ passing must have left a massive hole in a lot of people’s lives. My heart goes out to all those close to him. This guy and his music will never be forgotten...
I’ve loved their latest work, ‘Inner Journey Out’ from day one, but these songs seem to mean so much more now. A depth, a carefree sadness and a profound beauty to these songs make this material as strong as anything in their catalogue. Play it. It’s better than you remember. Sleep well, Tres Warren.
