Sahib Shihab „Sahib‘s Jazz Party“ LP (Fontana, NL, 1964). Sahib Shihab indisputably is one of modal jazz‘ brightest protagonists despite being a scandalously obscure figure compared to his more famous peers, a fact I still consider one of the biggest fallacies in Jazz history. In a time before jazz music went free and avant garde, there were a couple of inspired souls who put an emphasis on extended jams and improvised, yet melodic parts based on a mostly repetitive rhythm background. The result in turning away from the rather artistic and complicated bebop was modal jazz - Sahib Shihab was one of those inspired souls pushing the boundaries and being integral in shaping the form of Jazz. Though he mostly worked as a prolific member of various ensembles, he also had a couple of sublime sessions as a bandleader - ‘Sahib's Jazz Party’, recorded live at the Montmartre Jazzhuis in Copenhagen in October 1963 and released in 1964, being his third. The album features a couple of highly entertaining announcements by the master himself leaving the impression that he may have been a little far out that day but clearly enjoyed himself heaps, which is easy to hear from his splendid delivery that is as passionate as it is staggering. He can be heard on the alto, soprano as well as on the flute and the clarity, warmth & directness of the recording in addition to the audience that’s still audible in the mix perfectly captures the atmosphere, energy & intensity of the performance and enhances the feel you are right there with them in the club that night. And, boy - what a night that must have been! Sahib is accompanied by a cast of ace Danish players that deliver the perfect backdrop for his craft and leave him enough space to fully spread & unfold. For me this is as deep & exciting as modal jazz ever got and may be Sahib Shihab’s brightest hour. So thrilled to finally be able to file this little heater thanks to the fine folks at cologne’s @parallel_schallplatten whose minty Dutch OG copy I simply couldn’t resist.
