“Visitation” by Jenny Erpenbeck.
From the publisher @ndpublishing:
A forested property on a Brandenburg lake outside Berlin lies at the heart of this darkly sensual, elegiac novel. Visitation offers us the stories of twelve individuals who make their home here.
Elegant and poetic, Visitation presents a literary mosaic of the last century in Germany, tearing open wounds and offering moments of reconciliation with its dramatic stories and its exquisite evocation of a landscape no political upheaval can truly change.
@voguemagazine said the book is “told in dreamlike, almost incantatory prose (seamlessly translated by Susan Bernofsky), the novel is a remarkable achievement.”
@pwpics extended description of the book:
Erpenbeck's elliptical style, rife with naturalistic descriptions of landscape and geology, is better at describing the physical world than the emotional life of her characters, but in so doing, she hammers home her basic point—that people are part of the same continuum as the trees and glaciers that come and go over eons, and that "eternal life already exists during a human lifetime."
@guardian reviewed the book twice.
In 2010, its extensive review was concluded by this last sentence:
An extraordinarily strong book by a major German author, ingeniously translated, produced with love by an idealistic publisher intent on doing something about the shamefully small proportion of foreign literature whose existence our country [Great Britain] acknowledges.
Its 2011 review was more concise, which started with this sentence:
Jenny Erpenbeck's third novel explores the relationship between a place and the people who live there.
In their review, @wwborders said that the novel’s greatest strength, which is Erpenbeck’s strategy, is her ability to conceal and delay—with gradual disclosures—the telling of the story. It “create[s] a subtle layering of stories that is the novel’s greatest strength.” @the.independent praised:
Erpenbeck has a lovely way of conjuring bittersweet images out of plaintive language.
Susan Choi’s review in @npr said:
Erpenbeck's house [in this book] collects this inventory of rupture, displacement and loss.

While you may try your hardest to hide arguments and disagreements from your children, it is likely that your children are more perceptive than you may think. Kids pick up on tense conversations and subtle disagreements, and so it is important for parents to extricate themselves from a vortex of anger and disappointment for the sake of their children. Studies show couples who cooperate produce children who generally feel less stressed and more at peace with a less cohesive family unit.

I have an incredible relationship with my kids. Make no mistake, as an AMWOC this takes WORK. I video chat every single night when they are not with me. Even if they are not in the mood to talk. Calling makes it a point to let them know that I am thinking of them, and that I care. I go out of my way to volunteer in the school. Whether it's serving lunch, running the class WhatsApp chat, making gift baskets- I am always the first to raise my hand. It makes the kids proud to see their mother in school. I understand this may be hand when you work, and make no mistake- every single time I take time off, its a war with my boss. I don't use my vacation days to take vacations. I use them to volunteer for the PTA. I plan my visits a week in advance, to make sure the day is filled with activities and fun. I buy them little trinkets and present it to them at the exchange so that they start the visit with excitement. I make sure that my phone is on silent, and limit the use during visitation so that they feel they are getting 100% of my attention. I communicate with them, and every night before bed we talk about our day. Everyone takes a turn.
As an AMWOC you need to go above and beyond. You do not have the luxury that other parents have, because you are often facing emotional issues, anger, abandonment issues, and insecurities. You MUST overcompensate. As a non-custodial mother, you need to work overtime if you want a lasting relationship with your children. ...

That selfie you take in the lift after you’ve had a great guardianship visit 🤗 I had a great @brainsandbutter time in Hull last week. The University of Hull is such a special place to me ‘cause that’s where I had my first degree in Economics. It was such a nostalgic feeling being back there 16 years after I graduated! Though I’ve been in Hull about three times in the past three years, it’s just always great to be back there, and this time to “butter” a beautiful brain again 😄💛 My ears were pleasantly full with the many things my she shared with me, and my heart and hands are eager to execute some great progressive moves with her! We have already started! #Grateful 🙌🏾
Meanwhile @bo_series @adaosakwe @ebisoul @ruthieo7 we should plan a retreat to Hull one of these days! 😄

Sketching in @Tate Britain today as felt devoid of inspiration in the studio! Did a quick drawing of Epstein’s sculpture ‘the visitation’ which I love. First came across it in a copse on a hill in Galloway many moons ago. More in Stories 👆 #Epstein #sculpture #sketchbook #adrawingaday
