I finally got my hands on @yuyimorales book #dreamers and each page and then her own story are exquisite and such a love story of a mother instilling the love of learning to her child and a celebration of the gift libraries offer for free. I have loved each of #yuyimorales ‘s picture books but this one feels like a window right into her soul and a hand of understanding and compassion reaching out from the page to those that need shelter, refuge, compassion and understanding.

Happy Mother’s Day! I would like to dedicate this story to all the mothers around the world who fight to keep their children safe. A special thanks goes to my mother, Caterina, for her strength, determination and caring for others as a Pediatrician in a way that has no limits. Her example leads my way everyday. And, of course, thank you Maria for trusting me into your home and allowing me to take intimate images of your family as they adjust to a life in the U.S. and also for letting me be part of your journey since that very first day back in November when I met you on the road from Mexicali to Tijuana, Mexico tired and hungry from months of walking! You are truly an exceptional woman and mother; I am lucky to know you!
Finally, thank you @time and @karamilstein for the thorough edit and believing in my vision and my work and allowing it to be shared with the world. ••• In this image Maria Lidia Meza Castro, 40 does the hair of one of her twin daughter while sitting in her living room on March 12, 2019.
For the past four months Castro and her children have been living in a house in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. while her attorneys are gathering all the documentation necessary for her asylum plea after she was granted entrance in the U.S. on December 18, 2019 at the Otay Mesa port of entry with the help of non profit Families Belong Together, Democratic Congressman Jimmy Gonzalez and Congresswoman Nanette D. Barragán. Castro is from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. She is a mother of nine, five of whom she brought on the long, arduous journey to the U.S. as one of the 5,000 plus Central American migrants traveling with the caravan in October 2018. Castro fled because her 13-year-old daughter had started to be threatened by the Maras, the local Mafia, who wanted her to sell drugs and start engaging in prostitution. Also, Castro abusive husband had left three years prior and she’d been raising her children alone in Honduras since ••• #mothersday #asylum #migrantcaravan #caravanmigrante #mujeressolteras #singlemother #mexico #washingtondc #buildbridgesnotwalls #weareallimmigrants #makeportraits #filmsnotdead #analogphotography @hasselblad #outtake

If this guy can tell an immigrant’s future by looking into their eyes then I’m a fucking honest to god human radar who can detect people who are racist as fuck and who should never be allowed anywhere near our immigrant communities. These people are saying the quiet part out loud all of the time right now. This is Donald Trump’s America. #fucktrump #weareallimmigrants #fuckthis

In the past four years, the government has received more than 4,556 complaints about sexual abuse of immigrant children who were being held at detention centers, including a rise of complaints during the Trump administration’s policy of separating migrant families at the border was in place. Reports, which involved children who had entered the country alone or had been separated from their parents, detailed allegations of adult staff members harassing and assaulting children - including fondling and kissing them, as well as watching them as they showered, and even raping them. There are even cases with includes suspected abuse of children from other minors.
These children should have been with their families, not in the hands of corrupted adults who claim that they are protecting them. .

According to a new government data, immigrants serving in the U.S. military are being denied citizenship at a higher rate (16.6 percent) than compared foreign-born civilians (11.2 percent). The same data revealed that the number of service members even applying for citizenship has plummeted since President Trump took office, and attorneys for service members seeking to become citizens are saying that new military immigration policies announced by the administration in 2017 and Trump's overall anti-immigrant rhetoric are to blame.

On Monday (May 13th), Annapolis passed a law prohibiting landlords and property managers from probing potential renters and buyers about their citizenship status. The law would also prohibit landlords from evicting tenants based on their immigration status or reporting a tenant’s immigration status to anyone. Go Annapolis! 👏🏾🙌🏾

Last trip to Lake City, SC as ArtFields has come and gone and it’s time to bring home my work.
For those that couldn’t go, especially those that contributed photos, here’s a quick video.
If y’all have an idea where a 4’x 8’ mixed media piece might now publicly hang, I’m open to suggestions. ‘I Lift My Lamp Beside the Golden Door’, Glass, chain link, encaustic, oil and carbon on wood panel, 2019.

The Church of St. Mary was built to serve Irish immigrants in 1832-33. It is the third oldest Catholic parish in New York. The facade was replaced in 1871 by the prolific church architect Patrick Charles Keely. The original portion is the second oldest Roman Catholic structure in the city, after St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, built in 1815. #churchesofnewyork

We had quite a day ahead of us, lots of places to see before the sun went down in Creel. Our first quick stop was Lake Arareco. Surrounded by pretty cool rock formations and a pine forest, it was quite the view.

As the U.S. primarily focus on migrants and asylum-seekers from Central America, lawyers and advocacy groups say that they are seeing alarming rate of deportations to the African nation of Eritrea - a country known for its lack of civil rights and freedom.

Last year, Zeresenay Ermias Testfatsion, a 34-year-old Eritrean whose asylum claim was rejected, killed himself while awaiting his return to Asmara, Eritrea. Before being deported, he explained to the U.S. government that if he were to return to Eritrea he would be imprisoned and tortured by the Eritrean government. His family was awaiting his arrival at the airport (in Eritrea) when they learned of his suicide. “The whole family was waiting for him to come home” said Testfatsion’s cousin, Georgis Gebrendras, “I don't know what's going on or why he's dying. Why? Why? What happened?”

••• In this image Sayra (left)and Cheyli (right) play with flowers they picked from the garden outside as a present for their mother on April 4 2019.
For the past four months Maria Lidia Meza Castro, 40, and her children have been living in a house in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. while her attorneys are gathering all the documentation necessary for her asylum plea after she was granted entrance in the U.S. on December 18, 2019 at the Otay Mesa port of entry with the help of non profit Families Belong Together, Democratic Congressman Jimmy Gonzalez and Congresswoman Nanette D. Under Trump administration, an increasing amount of undocumented immigrants are choosing to leave the U.S. “voluntarily” when faced with the likelihood of long waits in detention centers before being able to contest deportation orders - doubling the number of application for “voluntary departures”. .

If you are not outraged by the abuse of immigrants then you are “complicit” to human rights abuses. Immigrants should have the rights without fear of abuses or retribution to make their case before a judge. They shouldn’t put in cages where children get ripped from their parents’ arms, brave women and men are abused.... .

They shouldn’t put in cages where children get ripped from their parents’ arms, brave women and men are abused.... . 📹 via PBS News Hour https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/immigrants-in-detention-choosing-voluntary-departure . . . #hibap #immigrationreform #nonprofitorganization #nonprofit #reform #haitianimmigrants #immigrants #bail #haitianpeople #peopleofcolor #🇭🇹 #immigrantsarewelcomehere #deportation #immigrantionstories #awereness #endsocialinjustices #immigrantsmakeamericagreat #immigrantsmatter #weareallimmigrants #lovenothate #brownimmigrants #blackimmigrants #asylumseekers #refugees #wewelcomerefugees #uspolitics #immigration #usimmigration

••• In this image Maria Lidia Meza Castro, 40, youngest children sit in their room upset at their mother because they want to play outside on March 9, 2019.
Also, Castro abusive husband had left three years prior and she’d been raising her children alone in Honduras since ••• #mothersday #asylum #migrantcaravan #caravanmigrante #mujeressolteras #singlemother #mexico #washingtondc #buildbridgesnotwalls #weareallimmigrants #makeportraits #filmsnotdead #analogphotography @hasselblad @hasselbladculture
