These stairs 🖤
I read the best quote the other day over on the @wellwateredwomen feed - something that made me hang my head in shame and that hasn’t left me all week: “If I can in any way slight another in conversation, or even in thought, then I know nothing of Calvary love.” That slapped me right in the face because I haven’t just fallen short in this, I’ve failed miserably 🤦🏼♀️. How heavy that makes my heart, I can’t even tell you. I know we are called to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry; but honestly, I’m often quick to speak (way too quick) and quick to become angry 🤦🏼♀️. It’s something I’ve been working really hard to change. Disciplining my mind and tongue to be obedient to Christ and the love he calls us to demonstrate is extremely hard. The flesh in me wants to justify my slights and sarcasm toward others - I want to say it is deserved even because of something that offended me - but all it really comes down to is an unchecked heart. For so long I left my heart unguarded and unchecked and that produced a lot of thoughts and words towards others that were not nice or loving. I allowed myself to feel justified for speaking poorly of someone just because I felt wronged in some way. I cut others down in the confidences of my friends because I was irritated by someone’s words or actions towards me 🤦🏼♀️ ... all while truly believing in my heart that I was genuinely different from most gossipy women and someone who didn’t talk ill of others 😳. I shake my head at the many many times I have failed in loving others as Christ has called us to - especially in these last few years. At the end of the day, there is really nothing I can do about my past failings except lay them at the feet of the cross, and I can actively and willfully change how I speak and think of others in the future. Loving on people that aren’t just in my circle is something I’m really striving towards this year, and I’m hoping by the grace of God I can make this a permanent change in my life.
It’s nearly time to start packing our belongings away for our next Open House! Here’s a throwback to when we opened at Christmas posted by our friends and neighbours @thehouseonthestreet ✨ Jehane x ・・・
“ A gorgeous day looking round @artistsopenhouses for Christmas with @ourbrightonvictorian our first visit was to the stunning @jehane_openhouse which makes me dream of white painted floorboards. They are so light and dreamy. And the artwork is amazing. We bought a beautiful print and could have bought everything! Well worth a visit to all of them if you can”.
We finished the upstairs hall this week with two coats of polyurethane over the four coats of white floor paint. When we purchased the home we loved that it had hardwoods everywhere but they were different hardwoods in each bedroom off this hall and the hall floors were in need of refinishing. The wall colors were dark and I need white (I get lots of teasing but as my granddaughters say “white is grammy’s favorite color and her next favorite color is white”). Also we have major budget restraints so it wasn’t difficult to decide to go white with my hallway floors. Ken says you could land planes here but we love it. The blanket in the hunter boots was a precious gift from beloved guests when we owned the inn. She was critically ill not too long after her visit and told me that while in the hospital her fiancée would tell her she was back in the inn....she said that was her happy place...it meant so much and I treasure the blanket. #happyplace #whitefloors #ilovewhiteeverything #whitedecor #farmhouse
SPRING LOADED :: My hundred years old home doesn’t have the luxury of a proper mudroom, so we just sort of walk into the house in either the dining room or the living room. To give this transitional area a sense of purpose, I put on the wall four brass tacks (used on boats) and this little wall has become one of my favorite & ever evolving vignette in the house. 🖤 Currently, it’s this adorable straw bag, felt hat, ceramic buoys, and my zero waste grocery kit (produce bags, Mason jars and so on) that I keep handy by the door. A daily reminder of warmer days ahead🌿 .

Repurpose, reuse, up-cycle, reclaim, recycle ♻️ Find endless beauty and stories in what can be salvaged. Find charm in the scars and imperfections, where you can... The only way to salvage this original floor was to embrace the imperfections and use them as as our canvas. The rustic worn look approach we used for the Duplex started with a coat of white paint on the scuffed up original wood floors, a whole lot of sanding and a few coats of clear sealer while avoiding creating any systematic pattern in an effort to look like natural wear and tear. Hard work and lots of sweat to make something look naturally old and banged up! Not as easy as it looks ;) Our first experiment with the practice happened at the Black Bungalow and it was pure LOVE at first sight for anyone entering the space✨It sure exhales a lot of character and is... well, very forgiving! 👍🏻 #notcookiecutter
