One of the side effects of Kobe Bryant’s untimely death is the emotional impact it had on men. It’s creating dialogue about men crying being associated with masculinity or lack there of. I’m glad this topic is being discussed because we need to break the stereotypes around men not crying or showing emotion.
The psychology world refers to this unhealthy practice as “toxic masculinity.” It refers to actions that discourage displays of emotion—other than anger—in men while also encouraging behavior that will deem the male “dominant” in a given situation. Using terms like “crying like a girl” or “stop crying and man up” in young boys causes them to suppress their GOD-GIVEN EMOTIONS. Over time, this behavior can lead to a dysfunctional emotional expression like anger and depression. It also manifests itself with chronic stress and ultimately disease.
It’s ok for men to show emotions or cry. It’s part of being human! Let’s switch up the dialogue with our boys and men and redefine masculinity!
