Teachings from the Dance Djedi Academy:
As we begin our steps onto the Path of Dance Mastery, one of our first lessons begins with the fundamental principle of Yin & Yang.
The ancient Daoist's uncovered the mysteries of Yin & Yang through deep meditation and entering into pure stillness.
Yin & Yang teaches us much about the Natural Law's of the Universe, about the polarities of creation, and finding balance between the two.
The wisdom gained from Yin & Yang can also be applied to Dance!
This ancient principle manifest's in dance through a plethora of ways (ex: fast vs slow, high vs low, sharp vs soft, water vs fire, ect). In it's most basic expression, Yin & Yang manifest's as Movement & Stillness. This adds to the saying "In order to understand movement, one must understand stillness", and vice versa.
Yin & Yang also manifests as two of the most foundational aspects of our dance practice, which is: The Groove & The Move.
The Groove is Yin. It is our heart-felt "feeling-based" expression of our dance. It is feminine in nature in that we must surrender, let-go, and get lost in the music in order to truly groove. To Groove is to move from the heart and soul. If you have no groove, but have tons of moves, then you are not truly dancing. Your dance loses a type of spirit or soul. Without groove there is no feeling, it becomes stale and lacks emotion. To groove is to freely dance with your emotions and set your soul free.
The Move is Yang. It is the technical side of our Dance expression. The Move is Masculine in nature in that it requires the use of our mind, discipline, and precise training in order to develop our technical ability. The Move consists of all the styles, foundations, concepts, and anything technical. When a dancer has no Move's they can just be an average person simply dancing and having fun. But when a dancer has good technical ability, they rise above the masses and truly step onto the Path of Dance Mastery.
