After reading about 85 pages of this book I decided it needed to join the library.
So far it’s described the processes involved in having an experience, going in depth with regard to traumatic experience, and shows how we can use both top-down approaches (for example: Zen) with bottom-up practices (for example: martial arts, yoga, qigong) to create healing and wellbeing.
I’m already seeing a lot of connections in how I’ve been trained, how that training has shaped me, how experiences live in my body, and why my practices have been transformative for me.
The science and psychology I’m learning from this book both reinforce and complement the methods I use in Nami Bujutsu, Umi no Budo and Personal Training.
This is a great book for anyone interested in understanding humans!

“Balance is sexy” are the words coming to me strong this week. Most people, including me, gravitate towards extreme answers with clear compact explanations. For example, anytime someone asks any form of “are you pro ____ or anti ____ ”, you are pressured into a binary. But ask you know, truth is not as simple as a light switch. I think most of us would agree that the highest wisdom lies in the in-betweens, but that shits complicated, so we prefer to traverse culture with either-or axioms, compact portable metaphors, dualistic games within larger dualistic mythologies. Admit it. When someone answers a question with “both”, it’s never quite as satisfying! This year has taught me to lean into the discomfort of relativity, and give more attention to context, integrating disparate “truths” to be more more open, to appreciate more reality. I’ve been drinking more water, and I’ve probably spent more time in pools in the last two weeks than in the last two years, but I’ve also been playing with Fire a lot more. Fire then pool is a great combo. I’ve been fusing Christianity and Occultism, but also cream cheese and hot sauce. Of course, I still have many prejudices to destroy. Krishnamurti says “art is putting things where they belong”. This was a game changer for me. I’m currently learning how to camp (this is huge for an indoor vampire like myself). So much about camping seems to rely on context, working and changing with conditions, like alchemy.
