Ken Heyman: A Tribute

Part 3:
Who would have thought the glorious conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein would have the hunky sexiness of a Paul Newman in "Hud"? Or the bent-over figure of a lumberyard worker in Nigeria would take on a monumental grandeur? Ken Heyman produced these and other astonishing  images during a career spanning several decades and continents. His subjects included notables in art and entertainment (Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Chaplin, Warhol and other Pop artists); President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society and the John F. Kennedy funeral; America's outliers (street gangs, sex workers); birth and death; the very poor throughout the world, and children. Especially children -- impish, curious, happy, in tears, graceful, wary, chummy, daredevilish.
Perhaps Ken's most wonderfully poignant subject was 5-year-old Willie. Attracted to a career in photojournalism after graduating from Columbia, Ken drove around the city looking for subjects and happened on an angelic, remarkably self-contained boy who lived in Hell's Kitchen in mid-Manhattan. His mother a prostitute, Willie wasn't allowed to go home during the day. He was to play outside, and neighbors made sure he was alright.
Willie was the opposite of Ken as a child. An overprotected rich kid, Ken didn't have the freedom to go out by himself and play. What he saw and photographed over two months was a child unusually comfortable with his aloneness, who was imaginative, who found pleasure in connecting with others who were also alone. Freedom, as the song goes, is having nothing left to lose. .

Part 2:
Ken Heyman had dyslexia, a learning disability that wasn't recognized as such in the 1940s and '50s, and his Columbia University grades were so awful he was put on scholastic probation -- the likeliest student to be drafted. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in January 1952, and after basic training would have been sent to fight the war in Korea, and possibly get killed, if he didn’t have three essentials: luck, visual acuity and the kindliness the staff at home had imparted to him.
It went on his record that he was the first inductee to score 100 percent on the visual intelligence part. Placed in the Medical Corps, he was kind to a wounded master sergeant at a veterans' hospital, the sergeant arranging for him to remain stateside. Ken spent the second year of his military service as the information and education officer at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The weekly hour-long talks he gave the enlisted men (on whatever war-related subject the Pentagon wanted the men to know about) helped him overcome his shyness and turned him into an effective public speaker.
Once back at Columbia, and more mature, Ken decided he would avoid courses requiring  mental skills he didn't have. His senior year, he took a class taught by the world-famous anthropologist Margaret Mead. Assigning a term paper, she said that if students wanted to take photographs to include with their final report they could. Ken went one step further. Could he, in lieu of writing a term paper, do a photographic study of a group of boys he'd been working with in a Harlem settlement house? Dr. Mead not only approved the idea, she also gave him an "A" on what he turned in. And soon after his graduation, the two began a twenty-year collaboration that culminated in their book "Family" (Ridge Press, 1965), which sold more than 300,000 copies and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Ken Heyman: A Tribute
Oct 6, 1930 - Dec 10, 2019

Leonard Bernstein, 1967. Photograph by Ken Heyman; in the collection of the International Center of Photography, New York. (©Ken Heyman)

Part 1:
I met Ken Heyman about a year ago to talk about the portraits he'd taken of the Pop artists of the 1960s -- Lichtenstein, Oldenburg, Warhol, et al -- some of the pictures to be posted on my Instagram page (see #lokephotopick No. 14). I met Ken again earlier this year to discuss my converting his four "sketchbooks" -- text plus photographs -- of his life and work into a memoir. Those of us involved in the project had hoped that Ken, in poor health for the past year or so, would live to see the memoir published. But that is not to be.
Ken had led an extraordinary life. Born into a fabulously wealthy family, he was the proverbial poor little rich kid. A large, introverted, shy boy who did badly in school, he was a disappointment to his parents and was bullied by his two older brothers. But if each of us has a guardian angel, then the one watching over Ken lavished him with care. Shorty, the man who managed the sumptuous city and country homes, was a kindly father to him all through his growing up years. His nurse for the first six and a half years of his life was a devoted mother. His closeness to the household staff not only gave him a steadying sense of self-worth, it also instilled in him a lifelong empathy for people: rich or poor, famous or unknown. From the get-go, he poured that strong sense of people-worth into his photographs. Someone who had probably guessed the boy was visually oriented had given him a Rolleiflex. While he did badly in class, Ken was good with the camera, becoming president of the camera club in his high school senior year. At Columbia University, he was a photographer for The Daily Spectator, the college newspaper. And while still at Columbia, this amateur photographer with the soul of a driven photojournalist snared photographs of Picasso at a bullfight and Hemingway in his Havana lair.
