You are allowed to be multifaceted. Never let anyone convince you that one part of your personality diminishes another. You can be both Solange and Cardi B. Twerk all night then speak eloquently at your board meeting in the morning. You can watch anime and ESPN, wear bundles and go bald!⠀
⠀
I used to suppress such important parts of my identity in order to fit a mold. Only wear certain clothes and listen to the same 3 playlists. Trying to convince myself that I was a pure representation of the images that were sold to me. An artist. A black girl. A college student. An activist. A peace maker. I never asked myself, or anyone else, what these titles meant. I only tried my best to embody them one by one, letting each identity eat away at the other. Couldn’t be too black, or too smart, or too “feministy”. Only the perfect combination of them all. A mannequin sculpted by comfort zones and respectability politics.⠀
⠀
I’m still learning how to embrace the parts of me that I’ve kept hidden, but “lemme tell you sumn”, I won’t get fooled again! Nor tricked in to believing my differences are set backs rather than level ups. Nah, not again! So don’t come my way with your limited perception of normality, or I will pop lock and drop out of your life! ⠀
⠀
Happy Monday y’all! Shake your butt and read a book today. 💕⠀

How have you learned to embrace all parts of your identity?⠀
