At this time, Soundgarden, together with the Pearl Jam, was working on the soundtrack for the movie. Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was tasked with creating a name for the fictional band that would appear in the movie. Before finally choosing Citizen Dick as a name, Ament compiled a list of potential names that included the name "Spoonman." The name was inspired by Artis the Spoonman, a street musician from Santa Cruz, California and later Seattle, who plays music with a pair of spoons.Chris Cornell eventually used the names on the list to create songs for the movie. "Spoonman" was among these, and an acoustic version was created for her. This first version of the song can be heard in the background during a scene of the movie.
