The white monkey, an ally of Rama, in his struggle against Ravana and the army of the giants, remains the symbol of intelligence and devotion to the service of a just cause. His adventures have provided a great theme for inspiration to anonymous artists whose frescoes cover the walls of the cloister of Wat Preah Morokot at the Royal Palace.

L’oiseau solaire ennemi des Nagas et monture de Vishnu est l’un des grands thèmes décoratifs de l’art khmer traditionnel. On le trouvait déjà dans les grandes compositions épiques des bas-reliefs d’Angkor Vat, mais il prit une importance grandissante dans l’art post-angkorien et moderne. ••
The solar bird enemy of the Naga and mount of Vishnu is one of the great decorative themes of traditional Khmer art. It was already to be found in the great epic compositions of the bas-reliefs of Angkor Wat, but it became of great importance in post-Angkorian and modern art.

November 9 | Today is Cambodia’s 63rd anniversary of independence from France! Pictured is King Father Norodom Sihanouk in front of វិមានឯករាជ្យ / Vimean Akareach / Independence Monument, which is usually the center of ceremonial national celebrations with the lighting of the flame in the interior pedestal of the monument. 🇰🇭
1967 | 60s print advertisement for the national railway transport, called the ‘Royal Cambodian Railways’. The northern line ran from Phnom Penh to Poipet along the Cambodian / Thai border and the southern line ran from PP to the south-west coastal province Sihanoukville.

1968 | HM King Norodom Sihamoni (then prince) signing autographs for enthusiastic fans after the premiere of of the film ‘Le Petit Prince’, at the Théâtre Preah Sihamoni in Kampong Cham Province. He was 14 years old when he starred in the film, acting alongside veteran actress Saksi Sbong.

1960’s | Cambodian weightlifter Ros Chantha lifts 110kg / 242 lb in preparation for competition at GANEFO, the games for “establishing nations”. This year Cambodia has 6 athletes representing the country at Rio: Sovijja Pou and Hem Thon Vitiny for swimming, Neko Hiroshi and Nary Ly for track and field, Sorn Seavmey for taekwondo, and Sotheara Chov for wrestling. 1911 | ‘Les Ruines d’Angkor / The Ruins of Angkor. Vintage Indochina tourism poster by George Groslier - who was a signifiant figure in preserving Khmer arts & culture. Earlier this year, a statue of him was made and placed at the Royal University of Fine Arts alongside King Sisowath.
1960s | In spirit of the upcoming Olympics, here are Cambodian athletes! This is the swimming team that defeated the 4 x 100 meters freestyle relay national record with a time of 4:02. From left to right, Hem Thon, Lay Keo, Lim Kim Cheang and Eat Kim Heng.

1955 - 1969 | This is Madame Saorin Tip Mam (1931 - 1975 ~ 1979 [unknown]) the first woman in Cambodia to receive a PhD in the medical field. Her manuscript, ‘Typhus de broussailles au Cambodge’ is published in the Collection of theses from the Faculty of Medicine of Paris (1958). She was the Director of the Biological Institute at the École Royale D’Administration / Royal School of Administration (est. 1956) and also medical school professor who specialized in anatomy and pathology.
However like many of her peers in the medical field, she was targeted during the Khmer Rouge regime for being an intellectual and was tragically killed in Battambang Province.

1968 | Neak Kru Menh Kossony, dancer of the 'neang' role for the Royal Ballet during King-Father Norodom Sihanouk’s leadership as head of state, and also President Lon Nol’s Khmer Republic.
H.E. Ms. Menh Kossony is currently the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.

1962 | The Royal Ballet dance troupe, with HRH Princess Buppha Devi as principal dancer, performing in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) in front of an audience of thousands of people.
