THE

MAGIC OF FASHION

Frocking Out With Couture The Bold and The Beautiful: A Bijoux Debut Petal Pushers That Inspire

A Letter From Ines Welcome to our second issue of INES, The Magic of Fashion. Fashion has always been a siren call, a magical voice that I heard as a young girl and still hear to this day. The call I heard this year came after seeing beautiful illustrations of a Nordic Fairytale, “East of the Sun; West of the Moon”. Inspired, I created a special capsule couture grouping we call Jewel Box: five dresses that were created without any limits on my imagination. Oppulent fabrics and beautiful shapes as well as unusal colors and unique embellishment gave a wink and nod to the world of fables. It’s been quite a magical year for all of us at Ines Di Santo in other ways as well. We can’t be more excited by the friends we’ve made, the collaborations that began and the new opportunities that have arrived to create beautiful things. And you meet some of them in this issue. Our new collections and runway shows are always exciting and the Fall Winter 2019 was even more so with beautiful shoes and jewelry with partner-friends. I met by chance the incredible team at Ciner Jewelry and from that meeting a beautiful collaboration evolved that resulted in Ines x Ciner, and our Fairytale Collection of 18k gold and rhodium jewelry. It was a dream come true for me as I always wanted to do a jewelry collection and working with Ciner, a heritage company with a storied past, was such a creative experience. I also had another chance meeting at a bridal event with Ward Simmons, the Vice President of Baccarat, another storied company. We found we were kindred souls when it comes to style and luxury. Before either of us knew it, we were planning to celebrate my new collection at a party in Baccarat’s beautiful store on Madison Avenue in New York City. And when he saw our Jewel Box sketches he made the brilliant suggestion of us incorporating stilettos with Baccarat heels. They were simply gorgeous!

Someone once told me that you cannot whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra. Here’s to my orchestra! Enjoy!

T

here are many exciting moments during the course of a year that this mother and daughter duo share personally and professionally, but the most highly anticipated moments are those right before the INES DI SANTO fashion show during New York Bridal Fashion Week. For months leading up to the show, Ines and her team carefully build each collection, dress by dress, sketching, creating mood boards that inform the spirit of the season, fitting and perfecting each gown down to the most minute of details. Every collection is a labor of love for Ines and her team, so when the big reveal happens on the catwalk, emotions run high. But for Ines, it’s the process of pulling all the elements of the show together that are the most fun and exciting for her. This is when she transforms the mood of her collection

12

into a show that will inspire brides, salon buyers and bridal press for many months to come, all from just 12 mere minutes of absolute fashion magic. “During the show the emotions are incredibly high. Fear, excitement, panic, everything gets rolled into one because you don’t know what’s on the other side of that moment,” explained Veronica, who is the Managing Partner of the Canadian-based company that carries her mother’s name. Every element of creating the show is meant to evoke emotion and desire, from the carefully curated soundtrack to the casting of models to the length of lash. Ines and Veronica agree that one of the most essential components of the show is the model selection. They have the ability to capture and express the essence of a look simply by the power of their walk or the flick of a train. And when a model

connects with the dress they’re wearing, it shows on her face, in her body language and in her spirit. She owns it. “It’s such a special moment for me when a model feels like she’s wearing a dress that’s made for her. It’s that same feeling I wish for all my brides, that they connect to their dress in a way that makes all their dreams come true. That makes me truly happy,” Ines said. When concepting and preparing the show, Ines, Veronica, and the creative team strive toward inspiring brides to embrace their individuality, so there are always a variety of silhouettes, details, and looks within each collection. Ines loves when a bride chooses a wedding gown in a non-traditional shade like a soft aqua or a spicy chili red, so she always includes a few important strokes of color for that bride who wants something unique. Each season Ines moves the needle forward by taking some calculated fashion risks. Who would have imagined that a sheer tulle cat-suit ‘tattooed’ with lace appliqués and belted with a giant matching train was actually a wearable option for the modern bride? But guess what? Those jumpsuits are a fashion favorite for the daring bride who wants to rock a major moment down the aisle. That was clearly a risk worth taking. “We’re seeing a major shift among millennial brides. They’re taking our message of fashion, individuality and style to heart,” said Veronica. “This is something we haven’t necessarily seen from other generations,” explained Ines. “They’re looking to make their mark, and project their style that’s true to who they are.” “We love that!” Veronica said, punctuating her mother’s statement. What is clearly endearing about spending time with the two of them together is their habit of finishing each other’s sentences. “It’s true! We do do that,” said Ines, who confided that when she does a new sketch Veronica is the first person she shows it to. Ines and Veronica Di Santo compare the growing of their company to the climbing of Mount Everest. They may have reached a peak but they have no intention of slowing down. Every show, every collection, every season, every dress reflects their mutual dedication to hard work and love for what they do and their respect for the beautiful, powerful, and unique women that inspire them to do it. –JA The mother and daughter dream team go through their paces at the Fall 2019 bridal show.

THE

IN CROWD

CRYSTAL CLEAR INES DI SANTO + BACCARAT, Partners in Perfection. WHO: BACCARAT WHAT: LEGENDARY CRYSTAL MAKER WHERE: EVERYWHERE Someone once said, ‘there’s no such thing as coincidences in life, only destined experiences.’ So when Ines met Ward Simmons, the Vice President of Marketing for Baccarat at a wedding industry event last summer, she knew she’d met a kindred spirit. So did Simmons, who likens their meeting as two hearts connecting. It became crystal clear to the two that an imminent partnership between their companies was in the forecast. Baccarat is the epitome of a French heritage brand. Founded in 1764 in Lorraine, France by permission of King Louis XV, it has a rich, storied history that has touched the worlds of royalty, celebrity, heads of state, and a discerning clientele across the globe for over 250 years. With the shared ideals of luxury, beauty, and excellence, Di Santo and Baccarat brainstormed an exciting collaboration set for the Fall 2019 runway season at New York Bridal Fashion Week. Held at the IAC Building in NYC, which is coincidentally shaped like shards of faceted, reflective glass, Ines Di Santo debuted Jewel Box, a mini collection of five extraordinary, opulent couture wedding gowns that shared the runway with the Ines Di Santo Bridal Collection. Each spectacular Jewel Box gown was paired and presented with an iconic Torsade Cristal Couture sandal from Baccarat. Designed by Diego Dolcini, this limited edition shoe put the perfect stamp on each look in shades of Nude, Claret, and Jet Black floating on a twisted crystal heel.

But the excitement continued after the show as Ines gathered the Jewel Box models and gently packed them and their giant ball skirted dresses into a NYC-style double-decker bus wrapped with the brands logos. Like a modern-day Cinderella story, Di Santo’s fashion bus headed for Baccarat’s chic Madison Avenue boutique, Ines and her girls in their ball gowns and Baccarat ‘glass slippers’ stepped out for a paparazzi-filled red-carpet moment and a celebratory party that raged on into the night, filled with the wedding industry’s movers and shakers. “We wanted to throw a party during New York Bridal Fashion Week to introduce a whole new channel of customers to our store,” explained Simmons. “We want young couples to come to the boutique for their registry, and actually, touch and feel the product. Luxury is meant to be used. Our message is, ‘Don’t lock up your fine crystal, silver or good china. Enjoy it every day, that’s what it’s there for.’” “As much as this was a celebration of weddings and our two brands, it was also a celebration of luxury, innovation, design and connecting with beautiful new friends,” added Ines. BIRDS OF A FEATHER (from top) Surrounded by a bevy of beauties, Ines embraces Baccarat’s Ward Simmons and the boutique’s celebration. The Baccarat Torsade Sandal, designed by Diego Dolcini.

THE

IN CROWD THE MAGIC OF MAKEUP BOBBI BROWN’S SPELLBINDING BEAUTY FOR INES DI SANTO. WHO: TIA HEBRON MAKEUP ARTIST WHAT: MANAGER OF ARTISTRY FOR BOBBI BROWN COSMETICS WHERE: NEW YORK, NEW YORK said Hebron. Each person adds an important piece to it, like a big juicy pot of jambalaya. Together we make it beautiful!” For 19 years, Tia’s work at Bobbi Brown has kept her busy as the main beauty lead for fashion shows, developing new products and formulations, and educating makeup artists around the world. But for Tia, designing makeup looks for bridal fashion week and for real brides, has become her true passion. Natural beauty, gorgeous glowing skin, and adding special unique touches are all central to the Bobbi Brown philosophy, and one that Tia takes to heart for all her brides. And whether they are floating down the aisle for one of the most magical moments in life or walking down an Ines Di Santo runway, Tia’s brides are always super-natural!

Who among us ladies doesn’t love the slick of a lip-gloss, the flush of a warm, rosy blush, or the glow of a radiant illuminator? Makeup is magic, but it takes great skill and talent to give good face. Thankfully we’re lucky enough to partner with BOBBI BROWN COSMETICS each and every season for our catwalk shows, headed up by the exceptional Tia Hebron. As Manager of Artistry at Bobbi Brown, Tia works side by side with Ines and her creative team to translate the mood of the season into the perfect face. Her ability to intuit Ines’ vision into a tangible beauty look is nothing short of brilliant as she balances the truly ethereal side of wedding fashion with the realistic side of wearable wedding-worthy makeup. Even when Ines takes a more abstract point of view, Tia manages to distill the elements down to perfect, luminous skin, a beautiful eye, and a luscious lip, and transform the look into something completely new and fresh every season. “I love working with Ines on her shows and collaborating with her team. It fuels my inspiration,”

DYNAMIC DUO BECAUSE TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE. WHO: HIRO AND MARI WHAT: HAIR STYLISTS/SALON 87 WHERE: BROOKLYN, NEW YORK We’ve had the good fortune to work with many incredible hair stylists over the years, but a hair styling ‘husband & wife team?’ We didn’t even know that was a thing! But honestly, what could be better than having the person you trust the most, the person whose creative wave length you vibe on actually be your work partner too? As a team, Hiro and Mari work as equals and to watch them create the perfect hair style is like observing a well-oiled machine in motion, each instinctively anticipating what the other needs without even speaking (try that with your better half!). For four years, this husband and wife duo have been creating incredibly cool coiffures for fashion editorial and advertising shoots, for fashion shows, and for clients at their Brooklyn outpost, Salon 87, which is why we were thrilled to have them work their magic for our Fall 2019 photo shoot. Together they designed multiple looks over the course of our big shoot day. Inspired by the luscious details of the collection and each of our four very different sets and moods, Hiro and Mari went from a tightly coiffed head of powdered coils to sleek and

slicked back to wild and wavy. And because we love to keep our creative teams on their toes, we enlisted Mari to finish off the day with a full head of fine-feathered friends in a whimsical nod to Ines’ jewelry collection inspiration. As prolific as the pair prove themselves to be, Hiro and Mari’s beauty philosophy can be distilled down to two words: edgy and modern. So how does that translate into wedding day hair? Less volume and natural waves are favorites, but in typical team form, they agree in unison that “it’s ultimately all about the dress, the gown will dictate the rest.” We couldn’t agree more!

ASHLEY RUSSELL

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Fashion at its heart is the continual transformation of style. It can change on a dime and instantly alter your mindset. That’s its inherent super-power. Sometimes we meet a couple that can shift our thinking about a particular style or vibe, like Ashley and Samuel. Consider the ‘bohemian’ trend. It conjures up a barefoot, barefaced, nonchalant attitude, one that throws caution to the wind and tosses tradition aside. Ashley and Samuel’s particular Bohemian flair captures the essence of that free-spirit sass but forever transforms it into an elevated sophistication, and in the process, gives it an entirely new spin. Ashley’s choice in Ines Di Santo’s Madrid gown was as effortless as her smile. The soft, fluid lace gown has a distinct vintage feel, but its curve-hugging fit, plunging front and back, made it nothing less than fabulously glamorous. Long, sheer sleeves with just a touch of lace at the cuff and a long cathedral length veil with a Spanish lace border finished her look. Surrounded by crystal chandeliers and twinkling lights at their evening, outdoor reception, Ashley wrapped a plush fur bolero over her shoulders to keep the cool Vegas night air at bay. Samuel opted for a sharply tailored Hugo Boss tux styled with sockless Gucci loafers, a perfectly synced sartorial nod to the couple’s signature style. The brides’ impeccably-groomed, flowing golden tresses managed to marry an old Hollywood glam moment with a bit of boho luxe. Wedding planner, Lia of I Do Details in Las Vegas carried the warm golden glow of the wedding throughout the details, big and small. Rich blush and creamy flowers, a gilt top tier to their wedding cake and gold trimmed table settings brilliantly mingled with pampas grass and vintage-style coupes filled with rose champagne patiently awaiting a toast to the gloriously boho-glam couple. CHARMAINE TONG

101 DRESSES When the bride herself is a fashion designer, the stakes change. Charmaine Tong knew exactly what she wanted to wear on her wedding day: clean, minimal, and elegant. No ruffles, no tulle, no bells and whistles. She knew how it should fit. But that was easier said than done. She was on the verge of giving up after trying a whopping 100 wedding dresses on (her sister clocked the numbers). But, finally this stressed-to-the-nines bride-to-be found the perfect gown, the Ines Disanto Liv gown at Bridal Galleria in San Francisco. Cue tears of joy. Reflecting on the long gown journey, she was impressed by Ines’ design and fit. Even though she didn’t want frills, she did pair her dress with a beautiful embroidered lace Carnegie bolero that added a touch of femininity to her refined, modern gown. Scott, her handsome groom and his groomsmen suited up in traditional tuxedos while Charmaine’s bridesmaids and Maid of Honor played it cool in a sophisticated shade of charcoal. The couple’s attention to detail and design acumen (Scott is the former head of design for Pinterest) ensured that the look and feel of their big day would be on point even when managing their destination wedding remotely with planner Opihi Love & Wedding Events. It was a seamless experience at the beautiful Olowalu Plantation House in Maui despite the soaring temperature and a wedding cake that turned up slightly smaller than expected (one tier instead of three). Now Charmaine laughs off her quest for the perfect wedding gown. “At the end of the day, our goal was to have a beautiful, formal looking wedding that had a relaxed vibe with great food and great entertainment so our guests could have a great time, and we achieved this many times over. No point in sweating the small stuff.’ – JA BRIDE @cching112 GROOM @sockmonster BRIDAL SALON @sfbridalgalleria WEDDING PLANNER @opihilove PHOTOGRAPHER @watergypsiesphotography LOCATION @olowaluplantationhouse HAIR & MAKEUP @rydashn FLORIST @loishirangafloraldesign

MOIRA VANDENAKKER

IN ‘BLOOM’ Saying I Do on your wedding day is one of life’s biggest commitments. For many brides, a close second is committing to a wedding gown. After an elaborate surprise engagement involving a helicopter and a mountaintop (the thought is at once exhilarating and frightening!) just before the Christmas holidays in 2016, Moira was sure of two things: that she was marrying the man of her dreams, Julien Hernandez, and that she would wed in a minimal, modern, all-white gown. Let’s just say one of those things didn’t go quite as planned and took a stylish turn that became a major statement that surprised even the bride herself. And because, the couple chose to marry in Vancouver (where Moira hails) along the picturesque Jericho Beach, an idyllic inlet that leads into the Pacific Ocean and overlooks the North Shore Mountains, Moira felt it was important to feel comfortable and appropriate for their outdoor wedding. A marathon wedding dress shopping session in Denver (where the couple lives) ensued with her mom and future mother-in-law, aka The Wedding Stylist. The trio chose several gowns for Moira to try at Anna Bé Bridal. Moira had pretty much decided on a white Ines Di Santo ball gown until she was prodded to try on the floral print Ines Di Santo Bloom gown for fun, and as they say, ‘the rest is history.’ It takes a confident, stylish woman to make such a bold choice for her wedding day, but Moira knew that the Bloom gown was not only a ‘showstopper,’ but it was ideal for her “romantic, elegant ceremony inspired by an enchanted forest.” How’s that for commitment to style? – JA

KT MAVIGLIA-MORGAN

C’EST L’AMOUR When KT joined her then-boyfriend Jordan Morgan, a pro-basketball player, in France for his three-month round-the-world game tour, the last thing she expected was a marriage proposal in front of the Eiffel Tower. But that’s exactly what happened. Fast forward two and a half years later, the couple finally said I Do in front of 240 of their nearest and dearest back home in Detroit. The globe-trotting duo have traveled the world together, calling Paris, Rome, Greece, Slovenia and Istanbul home as they move from country to country with Jordan’s team. So incorporating the romance of their whirlwind lives into their wedding vibe was a no-brainer. And what better place to start than with the wedding gown? KT tried on several ball gowns and A-line styles at Roma Sposa in Birmingham, Michigan, but it was Ines Di Santo’s Violet gown that immediately captured her heart. The curve-hugging gown with exquisite French lace fit like a glove taking KT completely by surprise, bringing the bride-to-be, her mom and sister to tears. The gown was a slam-dunk, not only for its timeless beauty, but also for its comfort and functionality. Influenced by all the incredible cultures of their travels, KT and Jordan integrated meaningful, authentic details throughout the day, from their reception in the Venetian ball room of the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel to the dessert table with specialties from three of their favorite countries right down to the gilded, monogrammed wax seals of every last hand-written note to each guest in attendance. SWEET TALK. Nadia & Co’s cherry-blossom inspired cake flanked by a duo of pink-glazed donut towers.

A

wedding shower is a little bit like the calm before the storm. One step closer to the big day, the dream begins to turn into reality. Surrounded by family and friends, the shower is a right of passage and a moment to take stock before you slip into your dress, position the veil and walk down the aisle. Bride-to-be Melissa De Lio knows a thing or two about weddings, as Ines Di Santo’s Customer Service Manager for the wholesale business, she’s got her finger on the pulse of all things-bridal. And in a poignant moment of surprise and subterfuge that involved the Di Santo dream team, Ines and Veronica, Melissa’s fiancé Fabio surprised her with a wedding proposal at the Ines Di Santo Toronto headquarters in front of the entire company staff. On February 3, Melissa put her wedding savvy to the test with a beautiful flower-filled bridal shower for 98 guests. Held in the airy, light-filled Doctor’s House, a historical venue in Toronto, Melissa hosted a three-course celebratory lunch surrounded by white and pale pink cherry blossom trees and an organic spray of soft creamy flower arrangements. Upon arrival guests were gifted with small floral bouquets by the bride-to-be and her flower girls as a token of appreciation. Melissa’s florist, Have A Seat, also provided the décor, distressed wood tables and chairs that brilliantly balanced out the clean, white space with a rich, organic rustic touch. Melissa’s pop of color in the room came courtesy of the sweetest dessert table, filled with pink glazed donut towers by Sweet Regards Cakes, a mouthwatering array of pink and white cookies and cake pops, and the prettiest pink cake by Nadia & Co. trimmed with tiny white sugar cherry blossoms, inspired by the day’s springy, floral theme. But what about that outfit?? In keeping with the whimsical, garden vibe, Melissa wanted to wear something that was both romantic and clean at the same time. Her custom jumpsuit, from the Ines Di Santo flagship in Toronto, was the perfect fit by balancing a soft, poet-sleeve lace top with a sleek, crepe trouser bottom. And of course the bride-to-be paired her jumpsuit with Ines’ whimsical, gilded birdcage drop earrings and Sofia Webster metallic sandals, adding a few subtle touches of blush and warm golds, complimenting the pretty pink accented décor, all to a divinely dreamy effect. –JA

hat could make a fashion designer who loves everything fashion happier? Designing accessories, of course. This year marks a definitive moment for the INES DI SANTO brand as the designer forays into fresh fashion territory. For twenty years, Ines has turned fantasy into reality for the thousands of brides who have walked the aisle in her wedding confections. This year sees a dream come true for the designer herself. Inspired by a trip to a MET Costume Institute exhibit and a chance meeting with the talented team at Ciner Jewelry the wheels were set into motion for a full Ines Di Santo Haute Joiallerie collection, crafted by the iconic American house of bijoux. Like Ines’s Fall Winter 2019 Runway Collection, inspired by the whimsical Norse fairytale “East of the Sun; West of the Moon,” the 18 karat gold and rhodium collection is resplendent with birds purposefully perched atop birdcage earrings and rings, moments from flight. Ines’s vision for her premiere costume jewelry collection makes the perfect exclamation point to her luxurious evening wear and wedding looks for the daring bride, a harmonious finishing touch replete with her signature romance, charming color combinations, glamour and wit. “I love jewelry and everyone who knows me will tell you I am that woman who doesn’t feel completely dressed without my lipstick and my bijoux,” Ines confided. “To finally be able to tell a complete story, from dress to jewelry, was most exhilarating. And like my company, Ciner is a family business and that made the experience that much more poignant.” The jewelry is not a bridal jewelry collection but jewelry designed to be worn every day as well as for special occasions like weddings. “Of course, I did create pieces with the bride in mind as well,” Ines added. “The minaudière is a perfect accessory for the bride.” Ines’s new trove of treasures ushers in an exciting era for the brand, igniting what is sure to be a passionfilled entry in her ever-evolving love story with fashion.

Nikki & Colton September 10, 2018

W

hen Colton proposed to Nikki it was a complete surprise. While vacationing in Italy, the couple traveled to her grandfather’s abandoned childhood home in a remote mountain-filled area. Once they finally reached their destination, Colton popped the question and in a moment that seems like pure rom-com gold, Nikki reacted by turning around and running in the other direction. But thankfully she came running back to accept Colton’s proposal. Whew. While considering what kind of wedding they would have (our ‘runaway bride’ toyed momentarily with the idea of no wedding at all), the couple decided they preferred an intimate destination wedding for a close group of friends and family in Italy. Nikki’s extensive online research led her to the experts at Exclusive Italy Weddings, a full-service destination wedding planning company led by the brilliant Laura Frappa. Specializing in luxury weddings held at exclusive hotels and villas throughout Italy, Nikki and Colton felt confident they were in good hands. With Laura’s guidance they selected the picturesque Villa La Vedetta in Florence, a beautiful villa built in the 1800’s with a spectacular panoramic view of the city. With 75 guests in attendance all dressed to the nines, Nikki and Colton took their vows in the perfectly landscaped gardens at the villa, serenaded by a string quartet and surrounded by cypress, olive and corbezzoli trees in the late afternoon sun. Gentle pops of coral, blush, and cream flower arrangements blossomed like wild, just-picked buds, adding a dreamy, romantic haze to the setting. The joyful ceremony was followed by a cocktail hour and a formal dinner on the terrace. A live jazz band played during the reception, followed by a DJ that kept the night-crawlers dancing through the wee hours. It wasn’t just the guests that were dressed to perfection. The bride, and groom, looked equally chic and sharp, respectively. When Nikki set out to find her wedding gown, she knew she wanted something sleek and formfitting. After trying out a few small boutiques, Nikki made one final stop, to the bridal salon at Neiman Marcus in Dallas. Not only did she appreciate their expert service but her stylist nailed it from the getgo. “Trying wedding dresses on is exhausting, and I knew this was the one. I was grateful to not have to try on anymore,” laughs the bride. Her choice of Ines’ Promise gown was exactly how she had envisioned her dress; clean, modern, and comfortable. Her only request was to add sheer sleeves for a touch of romance to her look, Nikki quips “that final touch was the icing on the cake!” The groom chose a tuxedo reminiscent of old Hollywood with a fresh European flair. His charcoal grey shawl collar jacket and black tux trouser look from Bonobos was the perfect yin to Nikki’s yang; reflective of the young couple’s cool, unfussy, sophisticated style. Before calling it a night (at 3:00 am!), the newlyweds and a small group of fellow revelers decided to hit the pool. Literally. The bride and groom were the first to dive in, fully dressed, followed by the rest of the giddy partygoers. The next morning Nikki anxiously surveyed her gown for the damage done by their spontaneous dip. But as ‘buona fortuna’ would have it, upon returning from their month-long honeymoon, one quick dry-clean and the bride’s dress was good as new, which proves sometimes in life you just have to jump in at the deep end. – JA

TY TAYLOR & ANDREW September 7, 2018

E

very year Taylor and Andrew embark on an epic adventure. Little did they know that a recent trip to the spectacular Patrick’s Point State Park in Trinidad, California would play a starring role in their upcoming nuptials. Clearly this spot left such an indelible mark on the couple, that they declared their desire to tie the knot at the park in unison several months into their engagement. Without pause Taylor gushes about the magical aura of the location and reminisces about the spectacular landscape, the towering redwood forest, the serene vista of the Pacific Ocean and whale spotting along the pristine Redwood Coast. On September 7, 2018, the couple, their family, and a small group of close friends made the trek out to the Pacific Northwest for an intimate ceremony along the Wedding Rock trail, a rocky bluff that sits high above the ocean. Dressed in the Ines Di Santo Madeline gown, Taylor made her way up the trail flanked by her mom and dad to meet her groom-to-be. As the couple were about to take their vows, the heavy grey mist that hung heavy over the day suddenly gave way to a beautiful, clear blue sky filled with sunshine and light, as if mother nature herself was nodding in approval. Getting married in such an awe-inspiring setting can be daunting when selecting the right wedding dress. Just thinking about navigating between rocks, beach, grass, and the indoor dining room at the Lost Whale Inn where the reception took place is enough to unnerve the bravest among us ladies. But not Taylor. Even though she decided against the Caroline Bisset Kennedy slip style she first envisioned, her Ines Di Santo gown achieved that simplistic elegance she had her heart set on. The sleek matte crepe column fit her figure to a T. Its long lace-inset sleeves, that she would never have considered until her sales consultant at The Gown Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri nudged her to try, made it the perfect choice and kept her arms warm despite the cool ocean breeze. And true to the bride and groom’s innately spontaneous nature, they were careful to not sweat the small stuff. Taylor knew the train of her gown was not going to go unscathed, but she didn’t want to fuss with it, so she let it be what ‘it wanted to be’ in the moment. The couple also gave Sarah Nunez, the Lost Whale Inn’s on-site Wedding Planner creative license from their chic reception table setting to the hand-picked flowers she plucked from her very own garden to make Taylor’s bridal bouquet, Andrew’s boutonniere, and the bridesmaids delicate leafy green crowns. You can plan the perfect day until your heart’s content, but it’s those serendipitous moments in life that serve to remind us when we’re in the right place at the right time with the right person, and all that really matters at the end of the day is the magic of love itself. –JA

aking fashion risks is part of the Ines Di Santo brand DNA. Never one to just go with the flow, Di Santo likes to flex her creative muscles at every opportunity. So how excited was she to see Dorota Linda, an Ines bride-to-be taking her very own fashion risks for the big day. Not only did Dorota select the red-hot, super sexy Giselle gown, a slinky, lacey affair with a scandalously low back but the bride paired it with a spectacular statement fascinator. Inspired by her own mother’s wedding-day fascinator, Dorota worked with Toronto-based milliner David Dunkley to create the ultimate bridal headpiece after spotting one of his over-the-top creations in the window of his Bathurst Street boutique.

The look of love Dorota and Anthony take a vintage Bentley for a spin around the city with wedding photographer Alex Albojer of Life Images.

144

D

orota remarks, “If I could give one word of advice to brides, it would be to stay true to your own style and don’t be afraid to do something different, or go against the grain. Just be yourself.” We couldn’t agree more. The bride loved the process of collaborating with Dunkley on her headpiece, admitting that the daisies grew in size along the way, but she couldn’t have been happier with the results. She loved it so much she kept it on for her entire wedding day. Now that’s a bride truly dedicated to style. Personal aesthetics aside, the choice of wedding venue was a reflection of the pair’s confident, modern style as a couple. Their selection to wed at the Art Gallery of Ontario was however, also a sentimental one, as they shared some of their very first dates at the gallery. The AGO is famous for its Frank Gehry designed expansion and his beautiful sweeping, spiral staircase in the spectacular main room. Surrounded by family and friends, the bride and groom took their vows beneath Gehry’s staircase, in the center of a large red circle with guests seated in a transparent ghost-chair spiral setting. Cocktail hour was held in the adjacent light-filled Gallery Italia, and the reception in the Bailey Court, which allowed guests to walk seamlessly from gallery to gallery for each part of the wedding. Throughout the celebration, there were brilliant bursts of vibrant ruby red, Dorota’s favorite color. The groom paired his cool shawl-collared custom tuxedo from Atelier Munro with splashy red socks. Even the couple’s baby daughter got in on it. As Anthony’s official ‘escort’ to the altar, she donned a tiny red-flower flecked headband in a nod to her style-icon mom. Dorota’s bridal bouquet, created by Toronto florist Jackie O, was an unconventional, wild arrangement of red spider orchids. Stunning red dahlias and red roses were scattered throughout the galleries and at guests reception tables. Red ghost chairs and red charger plates were the perfect finishing touch to the couple’s spirited wedding décor. It was quite the red letter day! – JA
