TONIGHT, 9/11 at 6:30 PM: Poet TIMOTHY BRADFORD's Workshop "Writing For the 2.1 Million: U.S. Prisons and Justice Writing Programs" at the Ralph Ellison Library in OKC.

Approximately 2.1 million people are imprisoned in the United States—655 per 100,000, the highest ratio in the world. This workshop will explore how creative writing can push back against injustice experienced by U.S. prison populations, particularly by Americans of color. We’ll read and discuss some history and theory, as well as creative work by imprisoned people, before taking on several writing exercises, including a chance to write back to some of those on the inside. We’ll end by sharing our work and discussing ways to get more involved, including attending a reading in October at a prison in Lexington, Oklahoma. If you’re hungry for ways your work can effect social justice, this workshop is very definitely for you.
Timothy Bradford is the author of the poetry collection Nomads with Samsonite and the introduction to Sadhus, a photography book on the ascetics of South Asia. In 2014, he co-founded Short Order Poems and, we’re lucky to say, began co-coordinating our monthly workshop series. He is currently a faculty member in the The Red Earth MFA in Creative Writing program at Oklahoma City University and a lecturer in the Expository Writing program at the University of Oklahoma.

As always, all writers of high-school age and older are welcome, and attendance is free. For more about this workshop series that we present in partnership with the Red Earth MFA in Creative Writing at OCU, Short Order Poems, and Oklahoma City's Metropolitan Library System, please go to http://ralphellisonfoundation.org/cww/

SOP highly recommends this poetry workshop with @cambrewhaha, superhero poet & health educator who led a fantastic @ralph_ellison_foundation creative writing workshop back in March! Details & RSVP link in second image.

On Wednesday, June 12 at 6:30 PM, fiction writer Julie Dill will present her workshop titled Setting Served Three Ways: Transporting Your Readers in Room 108 of Metrotech’s Economic Development Building as part of the Ralph Ellison Creative Writing Workshop series. How do we transport our readers? This workshop will analyze different approaches to establishing a strong setting. As always, we'll do some writing exercises together, share our work, and have a vibrant discussion.

Please note that, for this workshop, we've relocated to Metro Technology Centers at 1900 Springlake Drive, just north along MLK from the Ellison Library (whose classrooms are currently unavailable due to flood damage). We'll be in room 108 in Metrotech's Economic Development Building--for those who attended May's workshop, it's the same--and you can find a map on the Facebook event listing to help guide you in.
We're lucky to have Julie Dill, who is the author of Bluff, a young adult novel (Amberjack Publishing, 2017). Currently at work on several writing projects, she serves as an English professor at Rose State College and is a graduate of the Red Earth MFA Program.

As always, all writers of high-school age and older are welcome, and attendance is free. For more about this workshop series that we present in partnership with the Red Earth MFA in Creative Writing at OCU, Short Order Poems, and Oklahoma City's Metropolitan Library System, please go to ralphellisonfoundation.org/cww @ralph_ellison_foundation @okcuenglishmodernlanguages @oklahomacityuniversity @metrolibraryok

Please join us at Metrotech in OKC from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Wednesday, May 15 as we welcome Oklahoma essayist, journalist, and Tulsa Artist Fellow Liz Blood, who will present her interactive session "Borrowed Forms: Using the Ordinary to Get to the Extraordinary" as our monthly series of free creative writing workshops continues. (Visit ralphellisonfoundation.org/cww/ for complete information.) This workshop will explore how the seemingly-boring world of formalities like mortgage payoff letters and orthodontic reports is actually rich, fertile soil for writing. Poets and prose writers alike are welcome! We will practice using existing forms to act as a container for your writing and will consider what stories or meditations various forms suggest. This will be a craft and generative workshop with discussion and writing prompts. Don’t do any work ahead of time, but do bring pen, paper, and a form that is personal to you—perhaps a bank statement, resume, note, prescription, birth certificate, field guide, horoscope, etc. (There are no “wrong” forms.) Please note the break from our usual location. THIS SESSION HAS BEEN RELOCATED TO METROTECH, just north along MLK from the Ellison Library (closed this month for renovation). As always, all writers of high-school age and older are welcome, and attendance is free. The Ralph Ellison Foundation is proud to partner with the Red Earth MFA in Creative Writing at OCU, Short Order Poems, and OKC's Metropolitan Library System in presenting this workshop series as well as with our hosts at Metro Technology Centers for this workshop.
Liz Blood is an essayist, journalist, and editor whose work focuses on place, memory, contemporary art, and social justice. Her work has appeared in HuffPost, Sierra, Oklahoma Today, AWP Writer’s Chronicle, Hunger Mountain, The Tulsa Voice, and elsewhere. She is the editor of Ekphrasis, a poetry and art column at Art Focus Oklahoma, contributing editor at Awst Press, former editor of The Tulsa Voice, and is an adjunct faculty member at The Red Earth MFA in Creative Writing program at Oklahoma City University, where she teaches fiction and nonfiction.

Join us this Wednesday, 4/17 at 6:30 PM in the Ralph Ellison Library when we'll welcome MARK STEWART to lead the next installment of our Creative Writing Workshops. In Stewart’s workshop "Dialogue and Subtext: Strong Character Choices,” we'll discuss how writers can approach dialogue that communicates far more about the scene than just the words spoken by the characters. We'll look at how a writer can construct a scene through setting and action to convey a strong sense of characters' emotional responses during dialogic exchanges as well as the wealth of character details that can come from even the simplest dialogue choices.
Mark Stewart is a graduate of the Red Earth MFA in Creative Writing at OCU and, through a series of possibly deliberate life choices, now teaches writing at Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma City Community College. He has also taught writing for Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, the Metropolitan Library System, and the Oklahoma Literary Festival where he was also a featured reader. His work has appeared in publications such as Literary Orphans and Caffeine Dreams. As always, all writers of high-school age and older are welcome, and attendance is free.
