I drew this sketch in art class one morning, when my teacher asked our class to draw something around us. I mockingly started drawing my class-mate and it turned into a drawing that I took time and effort to finish, and in the end I was very happy with my results.My connection to #Vancouver or what Vancouver evokes to me:As a young girl I traveled often with my family all over the country, and traveling Canada is something I have always enjoyed, but my favourite trip is one that will always have a place in my heart. That trip was exploring the amazing province of Vancouver, with the people I love most. This was at a period when I lost the muss for a very long time so I wasn’t making any artwork and ended up neglecting my art-blog. The drawing was made with a regular office ballpoint pen. That means it is ink marks. If you look closely, you would be able to pick every single stroke of the biro I made. The main reason why I love drawing with a pen is because, with a pen there is correction. As a perfectionist, I would spend hours making this drawing if I used a pencil. I used a real girls as reference, her name is Ifeama.My connection to #Vancouver or what Vancouver evokes to me:From what I heard from those who have visited Vancouver, they say it is very modernised (far more developed than Bauchi, where I live), however the people are courteous. My inspiration for this drawing is my sewing model "Judy". She has been with me quite a while and has started to show signs of wear with watermarks more reminiscent of army camouflage and a ridiculous size small waistline. It is not easy to get models when the muse hits me so I find myself turning to Judy as subject for myself and students in drawing and painting. She reminds me of a time gone by when I used to make clothing on my mom's singer sewing machine and the stereotype female was supposed to look something like her. Hence the title "Impossible Judy". My connection to #Vancouver or what Vancouver evokes to me:Though born and raised in Saskatchewan, I hitch-hiked to Vancouver in the 70's. I fell in love with the area and stayed another 8 years, completing my Graphic Arts Diploma at Kwantlen College in Port Coquitlam. I met my husband there and we now live in the beautiful Hockley Valley, just north of Toronto. It shows the “irony” of the town I live in and the town I was born; Bauchi in Bauchi State, Nigeria, West Africa.Bauchi is like a hybrid of tradition and modernity. It is not the first world but it is modern and still stays truth to its identity and custom. Its modernity does not necessarily mean ‘westernised’ as the town has a strong Islamic but African culture. Bauchi is a strange mixture of then and now, where tradition and modernity stay together side by side at the same time.In this picture, you can see a motorcycle rider (taxi) and a horse rider on the same street. This is a very common sight in Bauchi. There is hardly a day you won’t see a horse rider and a bike rider at the same time. The guy on the back of the horse is ‘turbaned’. That is like a chieftaincy title (since Bauchi is an Emirate where the chiefs are given turban and a title).
