“One of the biggest struggles for me was to break from vintage-looking photography to something modern and more my own style. I love art and paintings; Edgar Degas is one of my favorite painters, so my photography has evolved to feel more paint-like.”

“When I bought my first Rangefinder, the guy in the store said it was a hard camera for women to use and that maybe I’d like an easier camera that had fewer settings. I shot my first roll and they all came out [perfectly] exposed. I was hooked.
⠀
“For me, taking pictures is a feeling and experience, so I try not to get too wrapped up in rules or technicalities. Sometimes I use construction lights or home lights. I’ve used leaves for shadow and texture. I also use a Sony a7R II so that hair and makeup artists can see what the frame looks like in the lighting. I often use a Mamiya RB67, and the RZ67. I love shooting on 120 film, so anything that uses medium format.”

"I work with a makeup artist or a stylist, and we mood-board our ideas together. Then we try to find a girl that fits our vision. When I saw Halimotu Shokunbi [pictured], I wanted to do something that was clean — that would literally pop.
⠀
“As a huge collector of vintage fashion, I like to visit thrift stores, such as Beacon’s Closet and Amarcord Vintage Fashion, who I often collaborate with by borrowing pieces for shoots. They always have amazing jewelry, which I collect the most.”

Self-taught photographer Laura Okita (@lauraokita_official), 35, lives in Brooklyn. Over her 15-year career, she’s worked in artistic roles from model to creative consultant and designer. “I had a hard time as a model because you aren’t the creative drive behind the photographs,” she says. “The thing I like about being a photographer is the freedom.” Her previous life in front of the lens gives her shoots an edge, too: “Being aware of the model’s feelings and having a comfortable working relationship helps to capture more sincere moments in my photography.”
⠀
Growing up on a farm in rural eastern Colorado, Laura lived miles away from the nearest city. “I didn’t have neighbors my age. I had nobody around,” she says, “so I’d look at all the magazines. I read every issue of Vogue. The first time I went to Manhattan for modeling at 17 years old, I thought [New York] would look like it does on TV, but it was just so dirty that I cried and wanted to go home.”

Isabelle’s (@isabellefeliu) work – whether by mistake or by design – is a homage to the female form and embodies a quiet, but strong brand of feminism. “I’m happy that people see body positivity in my work. Initially, it wasn’t a conscious effort, but it’s increasingly important to me to show diversity in the women I draw,” she says. “I’m always looking forward to seeing how my style develops. I get bored if it doesn’t grow or change course.”
⠀
Now that Isabelle has established her signature by drawing strong women, she’s turning to a new source of inspiration. “I want to start illustrating men now. I’m feeling inspired by them these days…”

“It’s very difficult for me to express myself through words, but with painting I can. Art allows us to glance into other artists’ intimacies, worries, feelings. I find it comforting to know we’re all experiencing these things.

“The best compliment is when people tell me they relate to my work. It can be far from what I intended it to mean, but I feel happy that it can make them feel [something] without having anything to do with me.”

“I’m very introverted; being out there is challenging. On social media, I’m a bit exposed and can never really disconnect. Even though my work is very personal, I don’t express myself outside of it or explain where it comes from. I leave it completely open to interpretation. That’s the way I find a balance between my introversion and having my work out there.”

“When I started [drawing], it was more about developing my style. I knew how to [draw] fashion technically and I felt more comfortable illustrating it. Also, at the beginning, you want to be liked more. I’m not saying fashion illustration was a way for me to be liked as an illustrator, but it gave me more confidence.”

Welcome to the vivid and dreamy imagination of Québécoise-Honduran illustrator, Isabelle Feliu (@isabellefeliu). “I often find myself gazing at photographs from NASA,” says the 29-year-old, who now lives in Oslo, Norway. Isabelle’s art stems from a deep passion to know more about our world, and what lies beyond it. “I’ve always been inspired by travel and more recently by space. It always comes back to the search to learn and the exploration of basic human curiosity.”
⠀
Her figurative artwork has a strong sense of escapism too. “I often see my work as a wish list of things I’d like to do and places I’d like to go... I daydream a lot!”
