Instagram is a mobile social media application enabling registered users to take photos and share them with friends on social networks. Sets of built-in filters make your pictures unique and remarkable. Moreover, users can tag and comment photos. It should be highlighted that photos have a characteristic square shape, unlike the traditional 4:3 photos, thanks to which they look like classic Polaroid ones.
In October 2010, in San Francisco, Kevin Systrom and Mike Kriegerem started working on Instagram. By the end of month the application had been distributed in AppStore for mobile Apple devices (Iphone and Ipad).
Success was achieved easily. The application got popular immediately after its debut. Two months later the number of users reached 1 million. In the next eight months it increased to 7 million. During this period 150 mln photos were shared on Instagram. In March 2012, Instagram was distributed in Google Play store, thanks to which Android users could also download it. It is worth mentioning that in April 2012, Facebook owner took over Instagram for 1 mld dollars.
Now, everyday 1.3 mln photos (15 photos per second) are shared on Instagram.
