From the VCR to the internet, the adult industry has been nothing but good for emerging tech, encouraging consumers to invest in new hardware and even developing different technology and business models themselves. Adweek dug into what that might mean for virtual reality.

1956 | Just Think It

American companies are big on slogans (e.g., @nike “Just Do It”), often paying agencies small fortunes to create them. But rarely do we hear about the executive who produced one of the first—and did it on his own: @ibm founder Thomas Watson, with “Think.” “All of the problems of the world could be settled easily,” he insisted, “if men were only willing to think.” After the founder’s son, Thomas Watson Jr., took IBM’s reins in 1956, Think proliferated in the company culture, appearing on calendars, wall clocks and, as shown here, company notepads. When IBM debuted the first tablet computer in 1992, the name ThinkPad was no coincidence—nor, many say, was Apple’s retort of “Think Different.” -- @klararob

1985 - Beef Inspector | Thirty-five years ago, Chicago ad agency Dancer Fitzgerald  Sample cast a retired manicurist named Clara Peller in a @wendys ad. In the spot, Peller inspected a competing chain’s oversized bun and bleated: “Where’s the beef?” 🍔 The phrase saw Wendy’s sales jump 31 percent 😲 and fast became part of the American vernacular. (Alas, Wendy’s fired its white-haired sprite in 1985, after she appeared in a spot for Prego beef spaghetti sauce and proclaimed: “I found it!“) Peller died in 1987, but not before the April 1, 1985 issue of Adweek proclaimed her “America’s first octogenarian star since George Burns,” and asked the question on most everyone’s mind: Why doesn’t Wendy’s just change its name to Clara’s? 📸 Courtesy of @gettyimages

UK-Based Media, Tech and Entertainment Company @culturetrip 🇬🇧 had their American coming out party at SXSW with @bobthedragqueen 👜 and @manilaluzon ♣️ so clearly we had to be there. From a double decker bus tour around Austin to drag bingo at night, these queens were amazing. As an official SXSW partner, Culture Trip‘s activation at the historic Austin Motel 🤠 included a movie screening, panels, and a recreation of Hong Kong’s outdoor market. Slam that link in bio to see more of their activation. 📸 by our art director (and self-appointed drag correspondent) @diannamcd
