#stanleyplanescountdown #2 Stanley No.607 Bedrock Jointer. Type 4 1908-1910, round top sides, two-line lever cap logo. 60% japanning. Very good condition. Value: $270 USD (not for sale) The No.607 jointer is for jointing long boards and flattening large surfaces. John Walter describes it as “a nicely balanced plane with a fine feel in use.” It is 22” long, 2” shorter and significantly more manageable than the No.608. The Type 4 has round top sides, low knob and the single frog screw. The second photo shows this round top frog screw on the left and the later (1911+) improved two set screw configuration on the right. Collectors may pay slightly more for the earlier round tops, users slightly less. Hans Brunner priced this at half my valuation in 2010, Walter around mine in 1996. Recent sales of flat top 607s range from $200 USD for a dirty SW with part decal, to $210, $270 and a buy-it-now at $242. Round tops are less common, and I find no recent sales. #stanleyplanescountdown #1 Stanley No.608C Bedrock Jointer. Type 5, 1911, flat top sides, last of the two-line logo lever cap models (3-line 1900-08, 1-line BEDROCK 1912-22, STANLEY logo to end). T-logo on cutter. Good condition $320 USD minus* (not for sale). Stanley released the Bedrock line, “the Cadillac of bench planes” (Walter) around 1900. ‘Bedrock’ refers to their flat beds where the frog fits, supposedly chatter-free and solid as the bedrock. There were ten models from the 602 to 608 and all (except the 605-1/4) also came in the ‘C’ alternative with the corrugated sole. This was intended for resinous pine or a ‘smoother feel’. For the first ten years of production, Bedrocks came with round top sides, like regular bench planes. From 1911, the flat top sides were introduced, along with Schade’s 1910 patent two large pins with set screws instead of ordinary screws to secure the frog to the bed. This meant that the frog could be moved to open or close the mouth, without removing the lever cap and the nice blade adjustment you’ve just set up. The ‘C’ corrugated types went out of production in 1935, flat bottoms 5 or 6 years later. The 608s are ideal for shooting long boards for joining. John Walter calls them, “about the finest jointer made by any American manufacturer.” Walter, in 1996, consistently values early round top Bedrocks higher than the later flat tops: Brunner, in 2010, disagrees, avowing the reverse and pitching round tops little more than Nos.2-8. Condition is everything. Walter valued round top No.608C at $100 to $450, flats $150 to $350. Brunner’s estimates are the reverse and 20% lower. Recent online 608C sales range from $250 to $350. *this one has a repair to the handle tip and a hang hole behind the handle. Either may kill a sale or reduce the value by $20 or more. To mark 1000 posts, this series documents my Stanley planes, from the lofty heights of the 600 Bedrock series, through the good, the bad and even ugly, down to the single digit bench planes Leonard Bailey brought to Stanley Rule & Level in 1869.
I will date and document each tool and discuss with you its value in US dollars as well as its use. I will also postscript those I don’t own and their value.
Unlike Walter Jacobs in the 1960s and 70s, (‘Stanley Woodworking Tools: the First Years’), we won’t pick up boxes of unwanted Stanley planes from country hardware shops cheaply any more.
The internet has changed the way Stanley planes are bought and valued since John Walter last published his ‘Guide to Identity and Value’ in 1996. Hans Brunner’s ‘Australian Guide to Identity and Value’ is more recent, if geographically isolated. Online tool auctions are difficult: ‘buy it now’ prices are often in dreamland and sellers tend to use them as guides. Tool dealers prices realised can be helpful, but still vary widely.
Regardless of the forum, sellers think a given price too low, buyers too high.
We can, of course, still find valuable Stanley planes dirt cheap in the wild: if we’re lucky.
I will propose a reasonable value for my pictured plane and suggest what earlier or later types may fetch. I will consider what a decal and/or a labelled box will add and what damage will reduce from value, where applicable. I will welcome comments.
Stanley planes (and I’ll include some scrapers) give many of us joy from their use, their history, their social context and their feel. I hope you’ll engage with this series and tell of your opinions on value and use of these wonderful tools.
