\\ Now Reading \\ The Flash No. 73Spoiler Alert: he's plenty fast enough. I'm a little behind on my reading and just got around to this one. The Year One story keeps trucking along. This wasn't a super exciting issue for me, felt like a bit of a lull episode to lead into what I'm assuming will be a convulsive issue 74 followed up by a cathartic 75 to round out the origin story. Good writing so far, the art felt a little less fully developed that the previous 3 YO chapters, but still a nice read. On the one hand there is a decent story being set up about the Outsiders coming together and Black Lightning developing into a leader, and the artwork is strong overall. On the other hand it feels a little disjointed, like they aren't sure what this book is about. How big of a role will Batman play? He alternates between support and central character roles, and it feels... awkward. I'm going to stick with it for another couple issues and see if it tightens up a little. And, that cover is terrible. I can't stand dialog on covers and all the YotV branding looks very poor. So my strategy for them both is the same: I read the TPBs from the library and buy the hardcovers for my collection when they are released. Paper Girls just keeps getting more bizarre, with characters from different periods looping back in on themselves, huge (selectively visible) mecha fights, and doppelgängers (or are they?) about... it's an insanely fun and crazy story. @briankvaughan is consistently excellent with his writing and this is a wonderful stranger Stranger Things before there was Stranger Things. The story is great, the civil tech war premise driving the whole thing is a very "real" feeling concept. There is enough usually dystopia/hero journey material that it feels grounded. And enough unique twists and turns to be very original at the same time. The artwork is perfect for the story and really helps to drive the plot. This would be one of those cases where the sum of the creative team delivers so much more than you would expect, everything gels in a way that amplifies the book. The story has a lot going on and the symbolism runs rampant, gentrification, cultural appropriation, tentacle monsters, misplaced rage, institutional racism, appropriately placed rage, well meaning but a little off-base allies, ooze-sacs, "cred" as an art/social commodity... I'm guessing a second read is in order to catch more of it. Wonderfully illustrated using a vibrant color palette not commonly used in grotesque human tentacle hybrid horror. A great example of using a comic as an art object the details throughout the book, like the subtly embossed intestine-tentacle on the cover, are very well done. And I get why they are making a big deal about 300 issues, but the covers look so much less tacky without it. But maybe they will find a new publisher and tragedy will be averted? I don't know what @skottieyoung background is, but somehow he has managed to capture nearly all of my feelings about caring for foster children in one book. Beautiful, heartbreaking, joyful, conflicting, fear-inducing, uplifting, it's the whole bag. The line about children not being pets that you need to train was so good! Even Maggie's thoughts are ones that briefly run through my head from time to time. A total homerun illustrated beautifully by @jorge_cor. My only tiny quibble with 8 is, the end of 7 had a very emotional cliffhanger and there wasn't a whiff of it in this issue. I really wanted resolution. I had heard the premise and was pretty intrigued. Overall, it was a decent read but it didn't grab me the way I was hoping. The story is decent, I'm a little bummed the didn't "rob banks" but only robbed one bank. Art is also good. My biggest issue is that I feel like some of the dialog, especially from the female characters, sounds like how a 14 year old boy would want an adult woman to talk vs how women actually talk. But maybe that's only reflective of the women I hang out with. I think I was hoping for a little more Criminals to go along with the Sex. As with all things, your mileage may vary. Anybody have thoughts on this one?
